Has under-employment of Singaporeans increased?

As a Singaporean, I am not simply concerned about unemployment. More importantly, has underemployment of Singaporeans increased? This is the more important question.

This is an undesirable scenario especially when a Singaporean has been trained by local institutions and is deemed qualified, and yet denied an appropriate position that exists in the employment sector in Singapore because companies prefer a PR or foreigner for whatever reasons.

At the end of the day, the qualified Singaporean have to resort to taking up stop gap measure jobs or gigs then this underemployment becomes the failure of both the MOE and MOM.

The lack of firm action to address this underemployment is a betrayal of trust as every Singaporean child has undergone 15-20 years of education locally. They would have put in the necessary effort, time and resources and given their trust that the MOE’s education system would mean that they would graduate appropriately trained and sufficiently qualified to attain relevant employment in Singapore.

The government has a duty to ensure that when such jobs in the employment sector are matched first to graduates trained by their MOE education system graduates by means of willfully crafted policies. For example:

1) Ensuring all HR departments are actively audited across the HR spectrum where hiring is concerned, which includes auditing from job design, description , advertisement, application through to shortlisting and hiring.

2) Offer tax incentives to companies that are diligently hiring Singaporeans in appropriate capacity.

3) Impose variable or tiered levy on any non-Singaporean hire that will ensure any amount spent on a non-Singaporean hire will be equivalent or more than the expenditure made to a Singaporean hire.

4) Make all indirect expenses to upkeep a non Singaporean hire in Singapore taxable instead of regarded as operating expenses.

5) Impose strict no excessive overtime demands to every employee and impose a hefty penalty to the company and the non Singaporean employees who engage in paid work outside the contractual working hours within and outside the place of primary employment.

In principle, the cost differential of hiring a suitably MOE school system trained and qualified Singaporean vs non-Singaporean hire should be zeroed out.

Remove unfair underemployment of Singaporeans by equalising cost of hiring and we will see a more productive and competitive workforce.

  • stupid sheep:

1st, root cause is too many cheap ceca ah nehs pinoy pinays and Msians in the country.

no employer pays more if can pay less. although we are die hard Singaporeans who have completed NSF NSR, we don’t hire any local if the alien is cheaper and not burdened with disruptive NSR duties.

2nd, as long as pool of cheap cheaper cheaperest pair of hands from ceca ah nehs pinoy pinays Msians is readily available, those are hired in preference to local born sheep since cheep and not disruptive due to NSR duties.

there are many guidelines from pap to follow. but we are talking about recurring costs every month. every S$100 saved per head per month works out to many S$ each year saved. local born sheep where got chance if such a pool of aliens is so readily available.

3rd, will we ever hire local born sheep? for sure yes, since there is a need for labour. but until that cheap cheaper cheaperest alien is unavailable, it ain’t going to happen this thing about hiring local. that is why local born sheep from local world ranked nus ntu smu drive Grab while alien ceca ah neh fake diploma and genuine EMBA Hull lives in S$1.5m condo with new citizenship to boot.

the only chance for local born sheep is it wakes up and votes OPPO so that New Government can form and correct all the current pap wrongs. NOW today 2020 it depends how many current 70% sheep wakes up and how many new ceca ah nehs converted to citizens. if more ceca ah nehs converted than sheep waking up, too bad. local born sheep needs to suffer another 5 years.

4th, finally, local born sheep needs to ensure it ain’t so, being outnumbered by new citizens ceca ah nehs, by pleading with their friends families to vote OPPO. otherwise, good luck.

disclaimer. we are not sheep. we are 30% OPPO. being of the 1st generation since independence, we are doing very nicely with many landed assets acquired in the 1980s on the relatively cheap end. whether sheep wakes up or continues to slumber, we ain’t affected one little bit due to us doing very nicely with our many landed assets. we are here only because we know it is wrong not to vote OPPO after so many years of pap lies.

The Global Competition for Investments are getting more intensive while competitive economies are staying effective by keeping the cost of living to affordable levels & keeping inflation down.

Frankly, S’pore’s Economy under this 3G–>4G MIW people have stagnated badly. How many of you believe in their capabilities – please “Kee Chiu”!

S’pore’s Infrastructural Spending weren’t invested wisely & effectively – Questions arising on ROI & on strategic implication. These need elaboration but are solely lacking (worse since: POFMA bill deflecting questions with a cease & desist action). This has rebounded on the high cost of living & inflationary cost push by “u noe hoo” re: water, electricity & GST.

Tax payers & citizens are actually paying indirectly for the Infrastructural Spending bill. Yet Ministers are getting performance bonuses by simply triggering S’pore’s GDP KPIs (Govt Spending) without achieving ROIs (Spending Effectiveness). You should know what I mean!

China’s cashless payment system had been up & running since a decade ago. Now even beggars & buskers in China accept donations through the cashless mechanism.

If you travel – to South America, Africa, South Asia – what you see is the Chinese beating the U.S., everywhere. In Costa Rica, Chinese merchants were buying up and running most of the local groceries. In Brazil, they will have become the major international customer for soy bean farmers and Bunge, as U.S. tariffs opened up the market to Brazil. In Africa, Chinese engineering and construction companies, and their crews, are designing and building most major infrastructure projects, with money loaned from the Chinese government.

China’s converting all their US paper debt into tangible assets all over the world. They’ve also used those funds to buy friends and influence people – expanding their influence by funding infrastructure projects in places like Africa and central Asia. They learned from the west – get a nation with valuable resources in debt and collect with deals on raw materials.

China views the past few hundred years as a aberration when western barbarians dominated their nation. They are back on the road to being the preeminent power in the world. And they’re doing it without having expensive military bases all over the world and squandering a fortune on pointless wars.

Singaporeans who never get out of their ‘comfort zones’ don’t get it. Even the China’s mei-mei are doing well here, taking over the hawker trades. And I must admit. They are more meticulous to customers. How to blame?

S’poreans need to get out of their ‘comfort zones’ [complacency, tunnel vision, etc]. They need to forget about their preoccupation for comfortable jobs re: those jobs that had existed between circa 1970s to 1990s. That has gone from S’pore’s eco-system for good. Dream on! And it’s time to wake up to a new reality!

S’pore’s govt has got no clue on how to compete on the International Stage other than on their 10 million population target & their heavy reliance on Globalisation when it is clear that Globalisation has run out of road to further expand on. S’poreans need to wise up (vote wisely) or else get a jolt of their lives when the Paradigm shifts within the next decade to a China-lead era.

The US has lost it’s appetite for funding world trade with it’s humongous trade deficit & their huge govt debt. The US$ is losing their Reserve Currency Status as other Govts aren’t accepting the US$ for trade settlement.

China’s BRI is a China-centric domination strategy that will replace Globalisation. They will use another medium of exchange to settle trade.

If one goes to China, the biggest impact in China’s logistics is the use of a high speed rail network & a heavy duty rail network to shift Chinese goods through their ancient “Silk Route” land channels.

Another is the Arctic sea routes through Russia-dominated waters. And to cream it all, the data digital highway using Chinese technology including 5G/6G mobile networks & Chinese high technology applications including their cashless payment mechanisms. The speed of development by China are beyond many S’porean’s comprehension because of the local pro-govt media eco-system which downplays China’s progress & highlights S’porey govt achievements.

By looking the self made female billionaires and millionaires all the Chinese women are self made while ours in LEE-iapore are from inheritance or through marriage. “Build it and they will come” is not limited to physical structures. Many modern Chinese women (mei-meis) are successful entrepreneurs and executives. They still have a long way to go to break corporate glass ceilings and in politics. There are opinionators of Chinese origin in American media who make a living out of smearing China by posting as Chinese experts. Unfortunately they leave readers with unbalanced views. Then again, that’s what propaganda is all about.

China has distinct advantages: population (raw numbers), work ethic, culture (“the nail that sticks up gets hammered down”) and (perhaps oddly enough) math (not that the Chinese are inherently better at math, but their language system teaches math/counting far better at an early age). I imagined thousands of Chinese politicians, industrialists, diplomats, and economists working more or less in concert to produce a winning economic strategy for their country.

Lined up against them is a small group of men, led by HSK and bolstered by the likes of CCS, OYK, JT, NCM and KBW, who know or care little about international economics–other than how it can benefit them personally. LHL have hundreds of experts available, but choose to ignore them for a hundred different reasons.

2020 is the start for a new era where a China-lead Regionalism drive replaces the US-initiated Globalisation effort, the US$ Reserve Currency Status be replaced by a variety of trade settlement alternatives from Gold-backed payment systems to Cryptocurrencies in the coming years.

China already showing the world where their efficient cashless mechanism (not dominated by banks) can replace the old US bank-dominated expensive transactional process (sic* Visa, MasterCard, Amex).

S’pore are still stuck playing an old Geopolitical Game where the SG$ is designated as a derivative of the US$ Reverse Currency alternatives similar to the HK$’s dominant role [SG$ is vastly inferior alternative to the HK$ for Investment use]. SGX vs HKSE performance is itself a strong hint! The other, property values, again S’pore vs HK.

The HK turmoil was a Western agitated political Storm-in-a-teacup to hurt the HK$ confidence.

And China’s dependency on HK$ convertibility to tap overseas US$ holdings into investment dollars to fund China’s Infrastructural Spending & trade initiatives (hint: BRI).

The above situation described are Paradigm Shifts of an immense proportion which will be initiated by China & her allies in response to US increasingly belligerent war-mongering attitudes.

Unlike LEE-jiapore(oxy’s), the Chinese are no beholden to any particular economic ideology then seem to be willing to try different tactics to keep their economy on track. They are willing to shut down unprofitable businesses unemployment does not seem to bother them.

China’s debt and Real Estate exposure are significant domestic issues that have been managed with variable success for almost a decade. Ironically, Trump’s trade ‘war’ provides the CCP cover to shift the blame for economic belt-tightening to the U.S.

But Brexit, Trump — let’s call it the Anglo-American Great Paralysis of the 21st century — along with EU breakup, Russian and Middle Eastern instability, energy crises, water crises especially in highly populated regions; climate change, the odd natural catastrophe or three, sudden political-economic implosions happening on any one or a few of the world’s continents, are each in themselves dire factors ready to bollocks everything up at any time.

Germany and many other important e economies are showing signs of deceleration, which confirm the trends after 2008 despite the uptick in 2017. Although nobody knows the extent of the consequences of the end of this cycle, we already know its ideological manifestation in the most superficial of phenomena like trade, borders, migration policies and so on. When capital flows and its return slow down, people react by erecting imaginary and real walls to save whatever they have appropriated. And we have MORONS in charge.
