WHO and NHC: Coronavirus can be transmitted via fomites

Both the China National Health Commission (NHC) and World Health Organisation (WHO)  have confirmed and warned that the current coronavirus strain that is wrecking havoc in China can also be transmitted via fomites.

Although the main source of infection currently are carriers who have been infected with the virus (mostly human-to-human transmission via droplets), NHC said that it can also be transmitted via “touch”, i.e. contact with fomites.

  • Fomites are inanimate objects or surfaces that virus can sit on for a short period of time before being picked up by animals or humans, which it then infects.

Humans are generally more susceptible to the virus, including children and infants and if infected, elderlies and those with underlying health problems such as diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases are more prone to becoming severly ill. NHC said.

Experts from WHO concurred and warned that it could increase the new virus’s contagious potential.

Dr Maria Van Kerkhove, a member of the WHO’s emergency committee on the outbreak. said that there is evidence that the coronavirus ‘can also be spread via fomites – when the virus survives on inanimate surfaces for a short period of time.

If the possibility becomes a certainty, it’s a worrying revelation for hospital settings, where patients coming to be diagnosed and treated for coronavirus may touch chairs, tables, beds, railings and much more, she noted.

It is currently not clear how contagious the new virus is, but she added that its ability to be transferred from surfaces to people could speed up its already alarming spread.

Meanwhile,  WHO announced that the Emergency Committee on the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) under the International Health Regulations (IHR 2005) will be reconvened by its Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Thursday (30 Jan) – to reconsider its decision not to declare a global public health emergency over the spread of the Wuhan coronavirus after “deeply concerning” new cases emerged.

To date, the number of confirmed cases worldwide have surged past the 7700 mark, with death toll currently at 170.

  • Spore must do the right thing:

if PSP or SDP or OPPO coalition is government, this is what they would have already done, ban all travels to and from China.

because pap is S$m money faced, pap is trying its luck. maybe this is a good thing because as long as one person in each pap S$m money faced family is struck with the virus, it is the best decision by pap.

doing the right thing comes from the right people.

pap folks are the wrong people, being nothing but S$m money faced hypocrites.

  • Only 10 Cases?:

This seems to contradict what Ministry official said earlier that the risk of infection through transient contacts on public transportation is low. It has to be highly contagious for the virus to spread so quickly in China, perhaps even through indirect contacts – door handles, hand-rails, vertical support bars, over-head hand grips, elevator buttons, shared utensils, etc.

  • TruBlu:

When SARS came,OUR TRAINS were not that packed compared to currently.
Yet,there were cleaners cleaning the trains regularly.

Today, with WUHAN C VIRUS that spreads more quickly,we dont see any cleaner cleaning the hand-rails etc as it has become impossible to do so meaningfully owing to over-crowding.

So,it is now more hazardous than when SARS striked.

Jialat, oso we were able to buy masks etc.
Now,more kiasu FTs wiped them all out?!

Hope sgs dont get too expised to this n other such future risks.

The GOVT IS RESPONSIBLE especially after alliwing EXTREME OVER-CROWDING in TINY SIN CITY.

So I am still worrying about the virus by ordering items from Amazon and eBay from China. Now I am wondering if there is any possibility of this virus being able to live on packing materials and items sent to me from China? This epidemic might be better than Trump’s tariffs at getting trade surpluses down.

For my past years of experiences in crisis reporting, any thing reported by the media concerning casualties or victims, multiply by 10. That is conservatively speaking. Sometimes, it is multiply by 100 times.

  • justanothercitizen:

There is a need to deny entry into Sgp all tourist from the whole of PRC. These will include those who had left PRC less than 20 days ago and even if they were in transit in another country. This should take effect immediately and remain until the situation improved and the spread of the virus is under control.
Returning Singaporeans, PR and FT/FW from PRC should be quarantined or practice self quarantine for a period of time.

WHO would most probably declare an epidemic situation, soon.

Guys, this is more serious than it is perceived here.

  • Only 13 cases?:

At 13, SG is catching up with Thalland (14). So far none of those reported cases are locals, All of them came from Wuhan. Maybe Singaporeans have strong natural immunity or special protection against the virus.
