Cultivate new mindset to face future crises

It is time for us to take the flu or the common cold seriously. If we wake up with a cough or runny nose, we often will just pop a Panadol and carry on going to work or going to school.

How many of us actually see a doctor, diligently take our medicine and rest at home?

With our Singapore mindset, getting to school and getting to work are more important than a runny nose or a cough. This must change.

Employers must not penalise a worker resting at home, nursing a flu. Employees must have the confidence that they will not be penalised because of an MC.

Students must know that missing a lesson or two does not make them the last in class.

The panic buying that occurred with the change in the disease response level showed that there is an urgent need to change mindsets.

Perhaps we should look at what we teach our children when it comes to dealing with national crises. Should we have a subject that focuses on the psychological defence of the next generation?

Uncertainties beget fear and anxieties. The panic buying of some people was an irrational behaviour but stems from real emotion and was instinctive.

We have little experience in managing ourselves in the face of such overwhelming circumstances. The world that we and our children face is going to be one with many challenges. Those who are going to ride it will have to be psychologically strong.

Let me be more specific. Her post is parochial which is based on her own perspectives. Also naïve to think employers are all idiots. Suspect she’s Tan Kin Lian.

  • Overlook bigger picture:

Here papa and mama need to go out to work to enable to compete have reasonable standard of living otherwise not enough money. One income alone not enough so mama must also work. Because Govt encourages everybody to work, actually all this done to help prop up make the rich remain rich and grow richer. Many working couples squeeze aside some of their combined income to hire maid and trust/risk these maids to handle home and children and food full time.
If wives stay full time at home to look after husband and children and food and health of family, we will definitely have quality families, better in physical and emotional constitution, hence building overall a quality nation. Mama tends to any sick member at home dispensing the medicines. Logistically and psychologically mama is the key backbone for the family to face tackle any crisis.
Here the chase for wealth overturn downplay the fundamentals of what happiness and the well being of the people should rightfully be.
The country could live with less and reset our priorities to focus on building good quality families.
All sorts of problems arise when wives leave their nests and go outside to work full time.
Educate women to get a double PHD, by all means, but her topmost priority and most important role as wives and mothers, as queens, is to manage and build strong homes in all aspects.

  • Protect Employees' Health:

It’s not cheap these days to walk into a doctor’s office. If it is just a cough or cold, you will be prescribed cough mixture, lozenges and Panadol which you can get OTC. At most, you get is only 1-2 day(s) MC; if you go to the polyclinic, half a day is gone waiting for your turn to be seen by a doctor and to pick up your prescriptions . With the flu (fever, aches and pains) you need at least 3 days of complete rest and MOM should make it a rule. With the common cold (cough, sneezing, runny nose), bosses should let their staff check out earlier to get an early night’s rest. Now with the Covid-19, things are little trickier because a cough could be something more serious; even that, with no fever, the doc will probably tell you to rest at home and observe for “the next one or two days.”

    @ Shirley,

REMEMBER THE ORCHARD ROAD MRT TUNNEL DEBACLE several years ago? IT STUNS MY UTTER DISBELIEF AND BEWILDERMENT that PAPpypolitics told the nation this – in crisis, JUST FOLLOW THE RULES!!

    IDIOT talking.

IF FOLLOWING THE RULES WORK, HOW COME THE CRISIS EVENTUATE of frightened commuters trying to escape to safety???

PAPpypolitics in crisis is ALWAYS CLUELESS.

    @ Shirley

In that Orchard Road tunnel MRT debacle, PAPpypolitics even alleged those from minority group “can’t communicate” with command centre.

And in Little India shame, PAPpypolitics claims alcohol and urine revealed drunkard behavior AFTER THE NIGHT CALM DOWN. I shake my head in disbelief again.

THE OFFICIAL NARRATIVE IS OFTEN DETACHED FROM REALITY.

Recent frantic food shopping tells of public distrust of OFFICIAL COMMUNICATIONS ACROSS ALL SEGMENT OF SOCIETY.

  • REGIME CHANGE is the solution:

Voters must also cultivate a new mindset and be forward looking. Without a doubt, there is more “upside” than downside from regime change. why? Because regime change will lead to openness and transparency in the public sector and therefore real accountability. Moreover, Singapore will become a real democracy with basic freedoms (free speech, freedom to assemble and an independent judiciary) and a free press. Lastly, PAP will never change because of, inter-alia, hubris.

  • Dump:

Covit 19 is not common cold or common flu, less PAPi tried to condition the mind in preparation to lighten the DORSCON level to negligently expose the citizens to harm-way. The virus causes pneumonia and death.

No one yet understand the effect of prolonged exposure example virus all over the air.

If the writer is inferring Covit 19 then she is as good as dump.

Do you know that there are medical subsidies for older Singaporeans who are the Pioneer generation and Merdeka generation from our government?
Perhaps you are too young to qualify for the subsidies, that is why you don’t have any knowledge of the existence of the subsidies.

same for the white idiots lar ? gdp first (work ?) ?

same analogy but on a larger scale for a country (a huge home) ? why no lockdown for a country when there is a deadly virus floating around ?

getting to work of course in sinkie land is important lar ? white idiots are having 6.9m or 10m open-leg policy precisely to put competition (and put spurs ) into daft sinkies lar ?

someone somehow got the priorities & values (mis)placed that resulted into the current state of our “nation” today, void of desirable characters and characteristics. 启蒙 修身 齐家 治国 平天下 ???

    Build strong families:
Many problems will be solved if “ONE SALARY DECENTLY SUPPORTS ONE FAMILY” is in place.
The state is responsible to set up this economic model.
The man puts the bread on the table, the wife governs the affairs of the home.
The target is better quality family life.
The state should not encourage the masses of women to go out to work which essentially is to support and prop up the few super rich to stay and remain rich.
In the natural order of needs and essential and for quality family living, the man works, the wife/mother stays home managing the home.
Biggest mistake is to entrust the managing of the home and especially children in their formative ages to strange foreign maids.
Educate women to the highest level she aspire to or could achieve and then get the natural order and priorities right.
Encourage and glorify the role of the woman/wife/mother to be the queen of the household.
This all important subject, long neglected must be seriously discussed and addressed in depth.
    Strong families equal strong nation.
One decent salary to sustain maintain one home family unit is the solution to most of the ills that we see around us and the world today.

Agreed, need to have a new mindset from the top.
For once , stop investing in loss-making overvalued companies like GRAB , WeWork, Uber, GOJEK.
Better Invest and build real local capability in key Engineering skills to respond quickly to a crisis like now.
Can we build Hospitals and masks factories quickly like China?
