PAP will form the next government

To the PAP, an election is not a process to choose the next government, but an impediment and a nuisance to them forming the next government.

To them, it’s a forgone conclusion, they are the next government, only question is whether they have to deal with one, two or three so-called opposition members or twenty of them, in which case they will have to spend a lot of time “fixing them” instead of crafting policies.

After all, when was the last time the PAP wasn’t the government? Yes, there will be pandemonium within the PAP if they lose another GRC, but that’s because they are a “kiasu” party; losing one layer of defence is not acceptable even though there’s buffer as thick as the blubber of a North Pole seal.

Voters in the Pioneer and Merdeka generations, who rode the wave from third world to first world, are fixed deposits. Likewise, the hundreds of thousands of new citizens. The same can be said with those who work in GLCs which arguably control more than half the economy as well as the many associates who have benefited from the PAP’s brand of state capitalism.

Thus they are the government not because the people elected them, although they did go through the process, but they are the government because it is a done deal, which they have carefully plotted and planned. And because their leaders are the cream of our meritocratic system and are thus gifted elites and their hearts are in the right places, we should not question them. There is really no need for accountability, they have our best interest at heart and they know best.

Such an ideology would have been acceptable during the days of LKY, GKS, TCC, Rajaratnam, HSS and LKS. Even though they did ride roughshods over many who disagreed with them, they nonetheless knew best and had the welfare of the people at heart.

But the same cannot be said of the current PAP, even though they think they are the elites and have the country’s best interest at heart.

Look at the Mas Selamat incident. For heaven’s sake, he escaped through a small toilet window in a maximum security prison, limped all the way to the Johor Straits and swam across to Malaysia while the whole police force and guard dog unit were hot on his trail. And yet, for such a gross failure and embarrassment, only the junior officers in the ministry were taken to task, while the minister is not “culpable of blame”. Where is the accountability, you may ask. Well, you see, how can you blame the minister? His heart is in the right place, he is one of the brightest man in the country and it’s not his job to guard the toilet, even though he in the minister in charge. You see, my friends, the PAP’s notion of accountability and our notion of accountability is very different. We think that because we elected them, they have a duty to be transparent and upfront with us, but to them, so long as they have the country’s best interests at heart, they have been accountable, and it’s best to leave the very important job of running the country to them since they are the gifted elites, while we should busy ourselves toiling at our jobs, go shopping, watch some silly TV programs and take an overseas holiday if we have the money.

Then Covid-19 exposed that they don’t know best after all, I mean, see how we were left stranded when Malaysia had to lock down on March 18? We had to spend millions of dollars to literally beg the Malaysian workers to stay here and keep the economy running.

Then CCS said we don’t need to wear mask, cos he took a gamble with the limited stock but only to do a complete u-turn a few weeks later, which by then god knows how many would have been infected by that gamble. Maybe he should gamble at Genting and not with our lives.

And then, not to be forgotten, they made foreign workers stay in dorms which are mostly run by their associates, and despite many lapses of the law, did nothing much, and lo and behold, Covid-19 infections erupted like a runaway forest fire, and the CB has to be prolonged, causing the economy to lose hundreds of millions of dollars everyday.

Well, I guess I should stop. Thanks for reading my rant, if you have reached this far. But I guess the point I am trying to make is that 4G PAP is not the same as the 1G PAP and should not expect the kind of blind faith that our forefathers accorded the 1G leaders, but must show accountability and transparency, after all they have shown that they are not gifted elites who know best but are mere mortals.

PG and MG were fixed deposits in the LKY era but not now. There are many disgruntled people around with many unhappy issues even before Covid-19.
Now with this pandemic and their shortcomings, free lancers, the self employed and small times businesses bear the brunt and see little hope of recovery.
They should not be defensive and should be sincere in admitting their mistakes if they wish to convince the electorate in the coming GE.
One thing is certain. They should not expect to garner 70% of the votes and could possibly lose a few more SMCs and GRCs.

Contrary to what Foong said above, they are not FIXED DEPOSIT anymore. Nothing lasts forever and the old saying of you don’t know what you have got until it’s gone will ring true once again when PAP is no longer in charge. Then we will suddenly hear them say to give them another chance, we will do better etc etc.

The only trick the PAP can do is to make the Singapore dollar look attractive. If they ever fail in this respect you can bet your HDB that there won’t be so many aliens wanting to work here anymore. Although they will form the government after the next GE what we really want to know is what percentage of votes will they get this time (most definitely NOT 70% for sure) and whether the opposition has made any inroads since the last GE.

Suppose PAP loses 30% of parliament seats you can be dead sure this will send shockwaves throughout the party. 30% in one go is not something that PAP has planned for, I’m sure at most they expect 2 small GRCs to be lost and not more than that.

So unless the majority of kiasees decide to vote for the opposition we all know not much will change.

All new citizens are of voting age and they vote PAP out of gratitude.

The 54% true-blue-NS-liable and NS-served/serving Singaporeans not all are eligible to vote. Some even depend on PAP for oxygen.

So you see Singaporeans are out voted by new citizens. Our only chance is to reduce the vote count of PAP, if we can get those fence sitters in the 70% to vote against the PAP.

@Mr. Foong; for your info, those Pioneer and Merdeka generations have had experience with the 1G PAP government and they have the basis of comparison. The PG and MG felt the current PAP has lost its way. In fact they are using a broken compass.

  • Are Cronycrats natural?:

“For I agree with you that there is a “natural aristocracy” among men. The grounds of this are “virtue and talents”. Formerly bodily powers gave place among the aristoi. But since the invention of gunpowder has armed the weak as well as the strong with missile death, thus bodily strength, like beauty, good humor, politeness and other accomplishments, has now become an auxiliary ground of distinction.

But there is also an “artificial aristocracy” founded on wealth and birth, without either virtue or talents; for with these it would have belonged to the first class.

Science is progressive, and talents and enterprize on the alert. Resort may be had to the people of the country, a more governable power from their principles and subordination; and rank, and birth, and tinsel-aristocracy will finally shrink into insignificance, even there. This however we have no right to meddle with. It suffices for us, if the moral and physical condition of our own citizens qualifies them to select the able and good for the direction of their government, with a recurrence of elections at such short periods as will enable them to displace an unfaithful servant before the mischief he meditates may be irremediable.”

    [President Thomas Jefferson, 1813]

    @ NotMyProblem

U have too much faith in so call true-blue sinkie.
Most of the true-blues are the one contributing to creating today’s situation. Correct or cowrong?

    Now, my understand is this:
There are more female voting for stability the male.
Females are more forgiven and give chance.
They tends to go for familiarity then new unknown.
They are more emotionally attached… so much so that they can give sex for emotion gain.

Like i said before, if 50% of the population are female, and 70% of them supports the usual, 15% fence sitter with 15% vote for others, then you can continue to see the current gov in for a long long time.

70% of 50% translate into a stronghold of 35% to overall.

If 50% of male population goes voting others, 25% fence sitter with another 25% supporters of current, it translates into 25% of 50% = 12.5%

    35% + 12.5% = 47.5% of hardcore supporters in majority vote.

If we say 50% of those fence sitter may vote for white-walkers, the number will look like this: [7.5% (female) + 12.5% (male)] / 2 = 10%

    Thus the new % = 47.5% + 10% = 57.5% majority votes.

57.5% majority vote will translate into more than 2/3 majority in pariahment.

To knockoff 2/3 majority pariahment power, the majority vote need to fall below 52~53%.

So, understand your support base and one can win better. One does not need to get more supporters out of the hardcore, what needed is how do one transform your opponent’s hardcore to fence-sitter, and then switch those fence sitters to support your cause.

In corporate world, when a bloke reaches a high salary bracket,he becomes kiasu or protective of losing it all.
And so,he becomes passive n reactive instead of PROACTIVE.

This pattern is easily observed among 4G scholars who take leadership role$.
They prefer not to be proactive but rather toe the line and PLAY IT SAFE?
They fear they will lose it all.
So,CONCLUSION is THE HIGHER THE MINISTERIAL SALARIES,THE LESSER THEIR PERFORMANCE as scholars want to protect their platinum rice-bowl.

To me,the GOLDEN ERA of the modern world n of Sg was from about mid-70s to around mid-90s.

Both Labour n Capital(technology) were about at EQUILIBRIUM and there was TRUE BALANCE.
THE LAST 20/25 YEARS cannot match that 1974-1995 period both in terms of REAL HUMAN DEVELOPMENT/PROGRESS SOCIO-ECONOMICALLY speaking.
Even the MUSIC of that ERA was more soothing and enjoyable instead of mere rowdiness and angst?

How Singapore’s World-Famous Street Food Could Disappear

The Singapore government is conscious of the threats to hawker culture. Earlier this year, Singapore’s prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong, announced a bid to make hawker centres places of protected cultural heritage under UNESCO. Other initiatives aim to educate the younger generation and attract them to the hawker trade. There are also calls for a new hawker centre management model that reduces capital costs for hawkers and is oriented around their role providing affordable meals to the public.

This will come after the first phase, which starts on June 2 and will last at least four weeks. During this period, economic activities that do not pose a high risk of transmission will resume.

The news left owners of F&B establishments disappointed. With earnings having shrunk by up to 60 per cent during the past 1.5 months, they were hoping to welcome customers back into their shops from June 2 to keep their businesses going.
