Foreign labour policy and worker productivity in Singapore.

For a very long time, Singapore under the premiership of Goh CT and lhl have been liberally importing cheap foreign labour to drive our economic growth and yet even much earlier, the late Minister Mentor and even Singapore’s old guard finance minister Hon Sui Sen had alearly foreseen the danger and warned us that our insatiable demands and dependence on foreign labour is untenable.

In 2001, lhl chaired the Economic Review Committee and in 2009, the Economic Strategies Committee was led by Tharman Shanmugaratnam. Many issues were brought forth, discussed and brain-stormed but looking back, we need to ask ourselves honestly how many of those issues that were discussed were satisfactorily resolved and their objectives achieved? The honest answer, I am afraid will disappoint many concerned people.

Our worker productivity is still in doldrums after all these years and among the lowest in the OECD countries.

Our current population is about 5.7 million and the government has announced that it is planning for a 10 million population. That level of greed, incompetence and stupidity is simply appalling.

Our addiction to easy cheap foreign labour has many downsides that too many of our citizens are not fully aware or fully appreciate.

One, it depresses wages of our lower income Singaporeans and two, our economic model rewards capital handsomely on one hand and underpay labour and wages on the other. Over time and operating such an economic model must push us to further import more cheap labour to sustain growth which has severe social repercussions and impossible to maintain. C19 outbreak is unfortunate but at the same time, it opens the eyes of so many ordinary citizens who bother to see harder, think deeper and analyse things more critically.

The government, however, will be laughing all the way to the bank because of the lucrative levies that it is collecting year after year. Those billions of dollars of easy money is simply to much for any government to wean off.

Such quickie, easiest and laziest way to grow the economy doesn’t need “exceptional” and expensive scholars and generals to operate. Anybody with some decent IQ would be able to possibly do better. Think.

This pap ministars are only left able to create good paying jobs for itself and its friends. Among other things, their economic model is to largely suppress local wages and that is very bad news for Singaporeans and their children. Think.

According to a 2010 article in “The Economist,” “The Stingy Nanny,” Singaporeans get no government help “unless they hit rock bottom.” The article quotes a 2009 remark by LKY who reportedly said that if “native Singaporeans lag behind ‘hungry’ foreigners (immigrants who ask much less economically than native Singaporeans) because ‘the spurs are not stuck on [their] hinds,’ that is not the state’s problem to solve.”

It would be wrong though to buy into PAP’s incessant mantra their harsh actions were only to benefit Singapore. It is without a doubt (as Catherine Lim says in the article), one of the most heartless places in the world.

I would compare Mr. Lee to Chung Mong-Koo, the owner of the Hyundai-Kia Group: Mr. Lee successfully ran a small country like a company. Singapore’s maxim was defined by the “Five Cs of Singapore” [C]ash, [C]ar, [C]redit card, [C]ondominium and [C]ountry club membership, but what it did not have was Compassion, is probably the commodity, which cannot be bought cheaply.

In this sense, Mr. Lee and Mr. Mong-Koo are very similar: they have created great products, but just like the brands Hyundai and Kia, it is a car without a soul.

But still, Singapore is a indeed welfare state – welfare for politically well-connected, self-aggrandizing “meritocrats,” that is more than enough time to bleed the country bone dry.

I think it’s also easier to praise the wisdom of LKY’s policies from the outside. It’s always to speak of sacrificing the good of the individual for the greater good when other people are doing the sacrificing.

CHEAP FOREIGN LABOUR is an ABBERRATION in reality.
When MANY LONG-SERVING STAFF OF DBS BANK were RETRENCHED EN MASSE some years ago,THESE LOYAL LOCAL STAFF were replaced by so called FTs like Indians and peenoise who were employed at HIGHER LEVELS n higher salaries and were paid more than our productive locals.
Whoever say FTs were cheap or cheaper?
COST-CUTTING used as an EXCUSE to TAKE AWAY JOBS from home-grown REAL TALENTS n REPLACED EN MASSE with FAKE foreign Talents at HIGHER COSTS almost immediately?!!!
Koh Boon Hwee(whatever his name) was appointed CHAIRman to effect the MASS RETRENCHMENT as he did at OTHER GLCs prior, including SIA?

It is MORE SO TO REPLACE LOCALS in order to CREATE JOBS FOR FOREIGN JOBLESS PEOPLE UNDER THOSE STUPUD FTAs like CECA ,etc???

Sgs always SCREW EACH OTHER UP BUT HAPPILY GIVE PAPple excuses for doing all the WRONGS?!

As for FWs,we need them unless sgs are willing to do those jobs FWs are happy to come here to perform?

Lets TARGET THE RIGHT AREA,ie,FAKE UNPRODUCTIVE FTs!

Goh CT was instrumental in the mutation of our Republic into LKY’s Sinchiapor Incorporated: from an aspiring natural aristocracy of the parliament that walked with the people striving for the common weal, AhGong roped in individuals with impressive academic qualifications into his elitist House of Lee through seducing their souls with prestige and megabucks by means of the toils of a denigrated citizenry silenced into well-trained underpaid and overcharged sheeples.

By the way Chok how are you doing in your idiosyncratic Swiss ivory tower? So quiet these mediocre pappy days you are…

If the factories and businesses cannot get workers, won’t they shift elsewhere?

  • Hello poor argument:

    @only new water to drink:

Hi, can give better argument? You give such a extreme case of “Govt Help” and “Compassion” that it will definitely not happen in this real world. And your cause and effect is so lop-sided too.

    Basic Logic 101:
If everything is FREE for Singaporeans, then all of us don’t need to work.
-> Doesn’t mean no one will work. You will have to prove that a critical mass of worker is not available when everything in SG is indeed free. More importantly, you will need to explain how on earth is everything free in the first place. In other words, the mechanics of making “FREE” work. For a start, how do you get the $$$ to flow in continuously? I know this is impossible but please share with us this secret knowledge.

If the factories and businesses cannot get workers, won’t they shift elsewhere?
-> They could, but this presumes your first point above is true, that there will be no workers or no desirable workers available in SG. This point also presumes that all factories and businesses aren’t able to get workers, which may not be true at all. This point is also dependent on how you make this “FREE” economy work. When you have these in place, then I will take your points seriously. If not it is just hogwash.

On another note, how about other scenarios that doesn’t fall into the extreme cases? You ignoring or pretending they don’t exist??

Lastly, the crux of your argument is actually a straw man (I am not even sure what the straw man is made of), where the defending main point was about the lack of a soul as a country via its policies and actions (and also the jibe at the privilege and hypocritical few enjoying and preaching at the expense of the many’s toil and labor). Your contention was to just lead us down a blind alley with some narrow example design to yield emotional rather than rational thought (and consensus, if one is unaware of this).

Or maybe I am just wrong, and you are more perceptive and far-sighted than I can ever be? If so, please illuminate me from my ignorance. I implore you!

My view is that the Finance Minister of that time the late Mr Hon Sui Sen set his views out to the trait*r PM and then he communicated it to the public, as though it was his own idea.

That is why he did not object when his son changed the strategy around.

Another point is that the elites and Singapore welfare recipients of the ruling class, based their salary on GDP figures. So they took the easy and lazy way out. Foreign labour and capital works will increase GDP.

Everything they do, they do it for themselves in mind. If you believe in this farcical “with you, For you”, rubbish then you are a fool.

The only way forward for Singapore, is to remove the PAP as they are a burden on the country and locked into a past mindset.

    VTO the PAP.

Poor Singaporeans have to work 272 years to earn what PM make in one year $2.2 million.??
Your calculation is the pay of Singaporeans decades ago.

According to the report in January 2020, the median average income of Singaporeans median is $5596.

Do you know why Singaporeans keep voting for PAP?
Because they delivered. They made this place work. Under them, there is low unemployment. Singaporeans can afford overseas holidays like nobody’s business. Singapore is also one of the most beautiful countries in the world and…most importantly, they have helped make Singapore work by securing our future.
So remember to vote for PAP to secure another 50 years of success.

Can’t you plot the statistical distribution of Gini coefficients for the different modes and formulate a null hypothesis?

Isn’t it more important to know what the below median workers earn in absolute terms?

You simply have to start using your intelligence. Conversation stops here.

  • Remember the newspaper report?:

In 2011 or 2012 or 2013 the straits times had full page productivity report. In it, it reported the worst productivity drop are construction, finance/banking and IT srctors. It is obvious these sectors are dominated by CECA FTs and FWs. The following year, the report lumped IT and fiance/banking into services – you have no evidence to blame the the CECA.

Everyone knows it is very hard to earn money in India through business investment, and their workers are not high productivity calibres (I have not talked about the quality – nowadays so many building/flat detects, pipe burst, etc), yet our government is super kum lan signed CECA with them in 2005!

    Why make it so complicated.
Look at this last year Singaporeans went overseas by air and by sea trips is over 10 million.(8.58 million outbound departures by air and 2.13 outward departures by sea)So this show that majorities of Singaporeans are rich and are able to spend. If our basic needs can’t be meant how to spend on luxuries such as holidays.
