Sheng Siong is very outdated in its information

When I visited one of its store in Ang Mo Kio wearing my Face Shield, I was not allowed to enter its premise.

I show the store manager of MOH rules and regulations but he gave me the typical Singapore answer… the top never update them on this. He insisted I wear a mask. His staff told me they sell a single mask for $1! That’s exorbitant to start with!

Such ignorance is pretty wide spread in Singapore. Many people are extremely confused about the masking policy and PAP government didn’t give proper comprehensive advisory.

It would be right to insist anyone who enters hospital or any Red Zone High Risk area like the FW dormitories to wear BOTH Face Shield and Face Mask but for normal places, either one would be adequate.

It is important to have such clear logical distinction without any confusion.

The following is the feedback I have sent to Sheng Siong:

I visited the above outlet and was refused entry into your store even though I was wearing a Face Shield.
According to the Store Manager, they are not updated on the approval of Face Shield even though I have shown him the MOH website on the regulation. [LINK]

I quoted the following from the MOH website:

“What types of masks should we wear?

For the general public who need to go out of their homes during this period, any mask including reusable masks, DIY masks or plastic face shields, offer adequate basic protection.”

DIY masks or plastic face shields which I was wearing is approved as far as MOH regulations is concerned.

It is apparent to me that your organization has not been updated at all on the appropriate type of masking needed. Your staff referred to a photo printout where it shows a person wearing a Face Shield as well as a mask. This is totally misleading as such protection is only needed in Red Zone area like hospitals.

I believe your supermarkets are not gazetted as Red Zone High Risk Area.

It is important to be vigilant in keeping our people safe during this period but such unclear and confusing information that your organization is giving out is not helpful at all for the country to maintain a Sustainable masking strategy in combating against this virus.

Please correct this misinformation asap. Thank you.

GMS, the face shield is to protect your eyes. If you observe carefully, they are always worn with face masks. These are the front line health workers who come in contact with infected persons.

Mask wearing is a common sight. SS staff just follow pattern. They only see PM & MPs wear mask in Parliament.

That’s why they don’t accept face shield at supermarket as it is worn in hospital setting.

GMS, based on MOH Guidelines, you have adhered to the requirements and you are confirmed abiding by the guidelines and socially responsible. Good man !!

Sheng Siong Management is dutybound to provide a detailed clarification to you and all Singaporeans who frequent their stores.

They should apologise to you if their staff is in the wrong.

  • Its Legal:

Face Shield is legal; an MP actually wore it to Parliament.
Effectiveness of mask vs shield is debatable because in hot and humid outdoor places of Singapore, the mask will be soaked in no time.
Many will be touching the mask repeatedly; hence nullify the usefulness.
BTW–Did Sheng Siong return the money given to it from tax-payers coffers since it is one of the very few company that will be doing very well because of COVID. GMS should ask them.

Singaporeans are like Soldiers of Authoritarianism.

    They Wait for Instructions.
    Unquestioning attitude.

The Mask Advisory lacking commonsense proved what they are made of.

They trust too much. When asked to not to wear, they assume there is no need to question it. When told to wear, they never discern what went wrong. Even till today.

They do not generally practise Independent Thinking. They rely on Instructions.

Seng Siong is right. Wearing a face shield ONLY will expose you from the bottom of your face. It will also spread the virus thru the bottom of your face if you are infected.
A face shield is to protect your eyes whereas a mask leaves your eyes exposed.

  • 100% Protection:

On balance, if a mask is worn properly, it is better than shield.
Look around you when you are outside.
How many are not wearing/using the mask properly?
It is the weather in Singapore that makes wrong usage very common.
The chance of misuse of shield is lesser; that is why the preschool kids will be given shield soon.
Sheng Siong should not implement precaution more stringent than required by law—Fairprice follow’law by law.’
