Public health risk so we ‘float’ them?

This article in the Straits Times has so much win that I just have to highlight the precious gems in them, lest we forget and do not learn lessons from them.

It is written by the President of the Society of Floating Solutions.

Incidentally, the fallacy (misguided racist view?) that domestic workers would get infected and then in turn infect their employer’s family is, well, unfounded.

What is true, however, is the opposite – that the domestic workers who have been infected were in fact infected by their employers.

And the part about how migrant workers are in our buses and trains and shopping malls, etc… well, please do a little mental exercise and replace the words “migrant workers” with “expats” or “Singaporeans”.

You will see that the migrant worker actually does what we do, like normal people. In fact, it is us who do what the migrant worker does – be in the bus, the trains, the malls, socialise, etc.

And by the way, if we are concerned about large groups of migrant workers congregating and thus becoming a risk to public health, perhaps we should take a look at the nightly gathering of thousands at Clarke Quay and such areas, getting themselves drunk and causing a public nuisance.

They too would present a “health risk”, no? Should we not also ship these people – the whole lot of them – to floating dormitories too?

In fact, just last week, some of these very same people were congregating and drinking – in broad daylight – in Robertson Quay during Circuit Breaker!

How many migrant workers did this? None.

So, who are the real risk?

Very sad to see such an article in the main broadsheet in Singapore.

It only enhances and entrenches biased and discriminatory views of the foreign worker.

If we are serious about improving the lot of the workers, we have a long way to go, if such rubbish pieces which appear in our national papers are anything to go by.

And oh, this health risk the writer talks about, which he seems to attribute squarely to the foreign worker? Well, guess what.
THE FOREIGN WORKER IS NOT THE HEALTH RISK.

The health risk IS THE ATROCIOUS MANNER IN WHICH WE MAKE OR FORCE THEM TO LIVE, IN THE THOUSANDS PACKED INTO TIGHT SPACES!

When can we please get this simple truth into our stubborn brain cells, and stop this cowardly behaviour of placing the blame on the worker WHO HAS NO CHOICE IN ALL OF THIS!

Urgh!

The entire premise of this piece of stupid writing is that the foreign worker is a health risk and needs to be dealt with, and the best way to do so is to remove them to self-contained floating platforms out at sea.

I can’t think of anything more racist than such thinking.

It is like saying oh, land in Singapore is limited, precious and valuable. There are cheaper nursing homes in JB for our elderly to go spend their last days.

We raised a howl then. I hope we will raise a howl now too, if such a similar idea is targeted at the foreign worker.

**Incidentally, 3 years ago, the writer also wrote about how Singapore should have floating nuclear power plants. The article was titled: “Time for Singapore to say ‘Yes’ to nuclear”.

  • Suck It Up, Andrew:

    Dear Andrew,
These lesser mortals, low class workers came here on their own free will.
We PAP did not invite them here yet we PAP are doing our best to help them at the risk of angering Singaporeans.

This is because we PAP are humane and compassionate but Singaporeans still come first.

The group you saw at Robertson Quay and Clarke Quay are talents that we PAP invited.

These groups of people are not the vulnerable group and have the means to pay their own medical expenses so we PAP let them gather and and let them bear their own risk.

See, we PAP are very fair.

In the old days in England criminals were also “floated at sea”. This was when prisons were overcrowded and Australia was not discovered yet.So when Australia was discovered y Captain James Cook the convicts were shipped there.
PM Lee M FUCKER this FW are NOT CRIMINALS to be FLOATED.The people who should be FLOATED are your incompetent ministers starting with SEX IN SMALL PLACES QWEEN Josephine,Son of a Gan,and Bugs Bunny Teeth Chan CS.This USELESS MINISTERS are one of the reasons that the epidemic no is SO FUCKING HIGH.
The action of THE SINGAPORE GOVERNMENT is like a kid getting a puppy.Once the puppy grows up and he is not willing to take RESPONSIBILITY of the puppy he puts it ion a pound.
The SINGAPORE GOVERNMENT is the same they brought in these FW and they did not take the RESPONSIBILITY OF HOUSING them in properly. It is the SINGAPORE GOVERNMENT’s FAULT that so many of these workers have contacted the virus. They should all JOIN FORCE and bring a CLASS ACTION AGAINST THE SINGAPORE GOVERNMENT.
    LHL F YOU.

The INFLUX of Migrant workers brought along diseases long eradicated and it returns with a Vengence!!! CONsumtion or TB that SATA fought so well and STOP it in the 60s…recent cases take a new course of medical action to cure those infected(a friend was infected and it took six months)…the medical cert from India or Bangladesh clearing the Migrants health is as Dubious as the Degrees issued from degree mills…I am NOT against Migrant workers but definitely against the way they were brought in…

As for the Maids especially those that have or had Migrant boyfriends or lovers is a RISK that should NOT be taken Lightly same as the Migrant Dom residents…should it Explode as it did with the Dom Residents it will be too little too late…with the hundreds of millions spent what is wrong in spending a few more MILLIONS to ensure that every maid is TESTED??? is it too much to avoid a similar Dom catastrophe???

unlike the Ministers and PAP Finger Pointing…is it not better to be safe than sorry…They are NOT sorry since they were REAPING in Billions from the Migrants and we the Patriots and Citizens had to Face & Pay for the fallacy and LEEgal Corruption of a FEW!!!

In my view, feeding of the foreign workers housed in dormitories is the responsibility of the dormitory owners and the workers’ employers. Even alternative housing should also be their responsibility.

So why should the PAP be feeding the workers and provide better housing with tax payer funds when the responsibility lies with the owners of the dormitories and their employers.

When food is given away free, of course their standard will go up. You would do the same if you are in their shoes. So don’t blame them, blame the PAP. it seems to me that the PAP is shielding some big wigs from culpability.

It would take the next GE and a change of Government before a proper accounting could be done.

You have employers who house the migrant workers in crowded conditions. The 70% indirectly voted for this.
