An attempt at a post-mortem of the GE

There were genuine fears among opposition leaders that there could be a complete wipe out of the opposition in the general election. In the event I think God had looked kindly on Singapore opposition and could have ordained that there should be some semblance of democracy in Singapore politics. And Workers’ Party could have been chosen as a Darling of Fate(天之骄子) and romped home in their victory in Aljunied GRC,Sengkang GRC and Hougang SMC. Although it may not come as a surprise to WP but I think this was something beyond their wildest dream. It shows that Singaporeans are tired of authoritarian rule and wanted to see more checks an balances in Parliament.

Sengkang is unique and could be a precursor of more revolutionary changes in the Singapore political landscape. The WP Sengkang is young and dynamic and could reflect the revolutionary fervour of the young voters in Sengkang. They were so favourably regarded by the young Sengkang voters. The PAP should have seen the writing on the wall and it was a suicide to parachute their candidates including the anchor minister Ng Chee Meng to contest the GRC. According to the grape vine they were viewed with disdain by the young voters and had at once become non-starters. The WP had a political star in Jamus Lim who had made short shrift of the Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan in their political debate. Another political star was a 26 year old young Malay woman Rheesa Khan who projected a formidable image of political activism. She enjoyed considerable adulation from especially young Singaporeans despite her skirmish with the police over her so-called racial writings.

WP Sengkang victory stunned the PAP as well as the general public because it was like something out of the blue but nevertheless it was received with jubilation by the young Sengkang voters as well as discerning Singaporeans. Now what is going to happen to the three PAP political office holders who lost in Sengkang is something the public would be interested in.

WP’s victory in Aljunied GRC and Hougang SMC may not be such a surprise to the public as they were already hoping that there could be some political development in the future. The Progress Singapore Party (PSP) has not done too badly considering that they were quite new and depended really on the political pull of Dr. Tan Chang Bock. There is a saying that is it not easy for one person to upset the apple-cart.

The PAP has garnered 83 seats out of 93 contested and has a comfortable majority in Parliament but we can see from hereon quite a lot of political sparks provided by the 10 redoubtable WP MPs in Parliament. They will keep the run-in-the-mill type of PAP MPs on their toes which is a good beginning. It’s good to make them sweat for their fat MP allowances. Unless the PAP wakes up from their slumber they may see more erosion of their political standing in Parliament in the future. I think they should take heed of the sagacious advice of Home Minister K. Shanmugam to reflect and soul-searching.

  • pap is now oppo in Spore:

everyone today in JULY 2020 is saying come GE2024 pap will not field pap Heng in East Coast.

    REASON.

pap does not want to have the first PM from pap to be voted out of office.

    bets are on.

pap PA paid IBs have not yet been given the script to rebut.

many via ZOOM are saying as soon as pap settles what to do with defeated ng chee meng, pap shall provide the East Coast script about pap Heng will not be fielded in East Coast to its pap PA paid IBs.

many say in next 5 years almost all the uneducated cotton producing sheep supporting pap shall have died off and so pap script to pap PA IBs amount to nothing in the end.

We agree with what the many have said about pap support base thinning as more of the oldies die off. This is a FACT.

Good joke Mr Yoong! HA HA HA HA HA!

Shanny is also part of the gang and the law minister as well so of course he would be good with words. Sure, now they tell us a nice story about soul searching this and that but give them until next February and they will be back to their usual selves after getting over the Sengkang loss.

PAP needs to be shown another clear signal at the next GE since they won’t change their way of doing things. Let us not forget that they have 83 seats now so they can still change the constitution as and when they like, it’s 83 yeses to 10 nos after all.

Their vote share dropped across the country so as long as the opposition parties keep up the hard work then I don’t see why they won’t be winning another GRC or 2 in the next GE. PAP will fumble again because this is not a party that learns from its mistakes.

So we all have to suffer in this election cycle but once the next GE arrives we know what to do.

    how can they not know?
PAP just want things to go their way.
all this talk about finding out the reasons why citizens voted in opposition is just PAP propaganda..to show theyre listening or they care…which i feel they dont.. after 50yrs in power, these leopards will not, cannot, and wont change their spots!

    Best outcome for Singapore.
A mandate for PAP with a reduce majority and increase of Opposition MPs.
The swing to the Opposition is indication of much unhappiness on the ground.
The ground sentiments favor the Opposition this time…
Anyway the swing of nearly 27% at West Coast GRC for PSP is unheard of…not a very good sign for PAP.
Need to seriously look at the reason and response properly to the issues..

In the previous Parliament, the wayang party had 6 MPs & 3 NCMPs totaling 9. Did we see any “sparks”. Unfortunately NO.

In the recent GE, only the Sengkang GRC MPs are new…….with them supposedly having contributed to the 9 MPs of the last Parliament. Did they make any difference. Answer is again NO.

  • Alternatives should be 1:

Anyone who say that Internet helped Opposition, the same can be argued that the internet helped PAP voters.

So the internet excuse for pap drop in popularity is weak.

I can also argue that because elderlies do not tend to access internet, PAP got more elderly votes. So pap could have lost more if not for internet.

One can also say Despite Covid , pap popularity dropped.

To this, I can also say more voters voted against PAP than before because of the failures or missteps made during covid.

    So it’s not the internet.
It’s despite Covid and internet, PAP votes dropped.

If we remove fear factor and civer serpents fear, and new citizens , it’s very likely PAP would have lost very big.

MPs should be allowed to have full-time jobs while serving. So that they can empathize with the working Singaporean, businessman, self-employed, professional. You want lawmakers who understand what it means to work for a living.

In democratic countries, MPs serve 4-year-terms. Live serving in condo management committee. So they must be able to resume livelihoods if they lose. We don’t want to copy authoritarian regimes (e.g. Saddam Hussein, Gadaffi, etc) style of full-time MP for life.

Low Thia Khiang was a member of the Parliament Select Committee in the early 2000′s on the enactment of the Buildings Maintenance and Strata Management) Act (Chapter 30 C) whose decisions becoming the law, had caused great sufferings and numerous law suits affecting the subsidiary proprietors of strata titled properties, eg condominiums even as I had reminded the Parliament Select Committee, including Low Thia Khiang of my earlier written representation to the 1985 Parliament Select Committee, which was the ONLY ONE, not published, about the deficiencies of the then Bill becoming the law under the amended Land Title (Strata) Act. In subsequent over 20years the PAPie government quietly adopted almost ALL my recommendations in my 1985/1986 written submission piece meals, WITHOUT acknowledging my contributions.

YOUR STRIDENT ATTACK of Tumasik Patriot, Zhenzidan – unprovoked and non-participation in this thread conversation – betrays your “hate-the-world” mindset to life.

    IT IS TELLING!!

MATE, YOUR HATE-THE-WORLD VITRIOL again sounds like an angry cut sn*ke rattled in a cage. It is comical of your spinning thoughts.

Realistically: Just to say that I don’t bother responding to that shameless low lifer who comment most frequently.

Some years back, after losing his arguments about PEAK OIL, he tried to deceive sinkies with the experience of one small Aussie exploration firm whose expenditure for ONE YEAR was even less than what Exxon spent in a day………..

With oil futures trading at MINUS US$40 per barrel in May 2020, that low lifer must have been nuts to talk about “PEAK OIL”………now sinkies should know whom to believe on TRE………certainly not that rabid low lifer said to be based in Australia.

I laugh at the lunacy of this windy-happy-contradiction of your profound academia prowess.

Can I remind you again of this page rhetorical flame throwing from your SELF-ACCLAIMED intensely academic depth of mind thoughts??

Realistically: he is too clever by half and has no qualm about the cardinal sin in academia about STEALING my idea without acknowledgment

What idea of academia import have I stolen from you? Which distinguished scholarly publication/s your work were acclaimed of your achievement and I cleverly “stole” with such “malice” of shamelessly theft of your skilled expertise “WITHOUT ACKNOWLEDGEMENT”??

Mate, me thinks you need to check up your mental health at IMH, soon and urgently – particularly with this one.

Realistically: Some years back, after losing his arguments about PEAK OIL, he tried to deceive sinkies with the experience of one small Aussie exploration firm whose expenditure for ONE YEAR was even less than what Exxon spent in a day

Who debated with Oxygen and when on “PEAK OIL” allegedly some years ago? I remember the topic in question was FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING APPLICATION of an oil exploration penny stock called Kairiki Energy.

It is difficult to comprehend how you could equate “expenditure for this small Aussie explorer for one year is less than Exxon spent in a day” WHEN THE NATURE OF OIL EXPLORATION IS LUMPY.

You need to do a lot of geophysical work prior and secure drilling permits, hunt for availability of rig, and drilling (depending on depth/complexity) in oceanic water can be US$25 million to US$200m each well. And you might drill just 1 prospective well in 5 to 10 years.

YOU HAVE JUST DISPLAYED COMPLETE IGNORANCE on a subject-matter you bragged the loudest of pretended informed awareness & KNOWLEDGE.

MATE, CAN YOU ILLUMINATE AND SHARE with all TRE readers where on which thread and when I did talked of “PEAK OIL” since March 2020 or even the last 3 years.

Realistically: With oil futures trading at MINUS US$40 per barrel in May 2020, that low lifer must have been nuts to talk about “PEAK OIL”………now sinkies should know whom to believe on TRE………certainly not that rabid low lifer said to be based in Australia.

I am curious as to how recent oil futures trading (speculative of short term trading risks position) could conceivably related to “PEAK OIL” issue of a long-term forward-looking projection which is DECADES down the road.

To avoid doubts again about your comprehension and your self-acclaimed expertise of the oil industry, why don”t I offer you this bragging rights now of “teaching” us your PROFOUND insight to this recent oil drilling results announcement from TAP OIL.

    https://www.asx.com.au/asxpdf/20200714/pdf/44khm4q4c2xrhj.pdf

What conclusion/s you derive from it? Positive or negative of these appraisal wells drilled?

I am “BEWILDERED” about the stock market indifference to this announcement.

I want to learn from you!

Better still, you supply the weblink to any thread that I spoke of “PEAK OIL” in the last 3 months of your informed awareness.

EVEN MORE PLEASING IF YOU INVITE TRE MOD to publish again WHICH THREAD on PEAK OIL which I (and allegedly other readers too since I can’t debate with myself alone on this subject, presumably??) talked of “PEAK OIL”.

IF OTHERWISE, PLEASE CHECK IN into IMH A & E to see if you need to URGENTLY buy yourself a new brain.
