Imported corona cases – in perspective

There is a daily report about the number of imported cases. It is usually a handful, but it does seem to be a large number relative to the local cases.

This may give the impression that the infection rate overseas is high, and the infected rate is low in Singapore.

It is a wrong conclusion.

All travelers entering Singapore are tested. The imported cases represent about 0.5% of the travelers.

If there is a random testing of the local population, the infection rate is likely to be higher than 0.5%. In the foreign worker community, the infection rate is probably 5% to 10%. I do not have the exact figure, but it would seem to be in this order.

There is a wrong perception that the people who come into Singapore from other countries have a higher rate of infection. This is the rationale for imposing the border control – to stop the virus.

It is the wrong strategy. It kills the tourism industry. It does not stop the spread of the virus – because the infection rate of incoming visitors is probably not higher than the local population.

I suspect that the people in charge are stupid or insane.

Better to have a lockdown and save lives than to only think of the tourism industry. You want to live or die? Tourism and air travel have been the hardest hit but saving lives is top priority. You really want infected people to just fly wherever they want and keep spreading the disease ah uncle?

  • Halimah Totally Useless:

Ask yourself, why admit these CERCA Indians and Pinoys work Permit holders when they are already infected ???
And asking them to stay at home, infecting other family members who will be going about outside, spreading their infection wider.
MOM and MOH should stop this bullshit and prevent further infections, or it’s a ever revolving game, never ending and tax dollars spent on these Trash.

@ Tan KL is back to his irrational panting, Covid-19 starts with ONE INFECTED and the fire spread from there.

If you add many “ONE” continuously from known high risks geographies you are asking for trouble.

That is why the aviation and disneyland amusement parks are heading for comatose or extinction and without opening globally of aviation, as is happening of now, holiday-making in the pre-Covid 19 days, tourism as we know it, is over.

The world may be without a vaccine for Covid-19 or if one is available, its potency may be of limited life-span or without awareness of its use side-effects on the survival of humanity.

@TKL. Are you in the tourism industry or affected personally? Tourists are alright but not people disguised as tourists, taking the cheapest and spending the least, to look for jobs to displace locals.

  • Meaningless data!:

Every day I read about new cases – few hundred cases every day and mostly workers staying in the dormitories. Local infection is always single digit and imported cases here and there. Every day for weeks, I read the same information and nothing seems to improve.

So I ask myself, what can I do with this information? Will it make me feel safer? Will it help me sleep better? Will it enhance my sense of well-being? It does absolutely nothing for me and I continue to worry if I could be the next victim since I am in the vulnerable group.

So I am telling the Gahmen to stop trying to impress with those figures. They mean nothing to the “person-in-the-street”. Time to get the Ministers of their bums and start to earn their salaries!

  • prudent action needed:

We can open our borders but make it compulsory to do the swap test for all arrivals .Make them wear tagging devices (to be return when they leave the countries) in case we need to do contact tracing.
Hold them at designated centers until their rapid test result is negative.
Need to take prudent action to save lives and economy.
