Temasek reinforces the idea of rich and powerful vs poor and vulnerable?

Liew Mun Leong

The Parti Liyani — Liew Mun Leong case is such gripping drama because it is David vs Goliath, the weak and vulnerable vs the elite and entitled.

What chance did Parti have against an upstanding member of society and darling of the establishment who has contributed much to Singapore?

How often does David triumph against Goliath?

The case of Parti Liyani is to be both celebrated and mourned.

Celebrated because her High Court acquittal is so hard-fought – rarely do we have all the elements combined, of a defendant with resilience, the unsparing support of non-governmental organisation HOME, an indefatigable defence counsel and an impeccable High Court judge.

Mourned because it pricks the conscience of a nation. A statement by Red Lion Circle, the law firm of defence counsel Anil Balchandani who acted for Parti Liyani pro-bono, reads in part:

There are many more Parti Liyanis who languish in shelters and our prisons who’s attention we, as a nation, should turn to.

Parti Liyani could easily have fallen through the cracks in the system. How many others before her did fall through and are languishing in shelters and prisons?

In light of everything, what Temasek chooses to say of Liew Mun Leong is most revealing: “There are many individuals who have contributed to both public service and the private sector in Singapore for the benefit of Singapore and our population as a whole. (Mr Liew) is one of those persons, and his track record at CapitaLand, at Changi Airport Group, and at Surbana Jurong attest to that.”

Does his contribution and track record eclipse his behaviour and actions?

Left unspoken is, what contribution has Parti Liyani made to Singapore?

Actually Parti did contribute as a domestic helper in this country. What about her contribution to the Liew family? Does that not count? After working for the family for nine years, she was given three hours to pack up and leave.

It’s also interesting that Law Minister K Shanmugam has adopted a more nuanced but somewhat baffling stance.

When asked for his views yesterday on public comments that the case had been between two parties of vastly different backgrounds, the Minister said: “It is not between a very prominent business person and a foreign domestic worker. She was charged in a criminal case based on a complaint by the business person.”A classic head-scratcher, that one. Try and figure out what the Minister is trying to say.

The Minister’s reference to Liew as a “business person” is also noteworthy.

Liew is the Chairman of Changi Airport Group and Surbana Jurong, senior international advisor to Temasek, and Provost Chair Professor (Practice) in NUS Business School and Faculty of Engineering. He has also been awarded the prestigious Meritorious Service Medal and Public Administration Medal.

Liew is not just any business person. He is very much an entrenched member of the establishment and the elite class.

Will we be seeing more distancing between the government and Liew Mun Leong?

  • Remove Liew Mum Leong:

“MOM had issued a warning to Liew’s wife, Ng Lai Peng, and an advisory to his son, Karl Liew, in May 2018. These were for making Parti work illegally at other premises, including the son’s home and office.

On Tuesday, MOM said that among the annual average of 155 employers who illegally deployed their foreign domestic workers, an average of about 60 were issued with an advisory notice, while 80 were issued with a caution notice. The rest paid fines of between S$3,300 and S$24,000 (US$2,400 and US$17,500).

Advisory notices are issued in cases where the illegal deployment is not “conclusively substantiated”, MOM said. These serve as a reminder of an employer’s legal obligations under the Employment of Foreign Manpower Act and the Employment of Foreign Manpower Regulations.

A caution notice, which is equivalent to a stern police warning, is issued when the illegal deployment is “infrequent, or took place over a short period of time”, MOM said.”

So an advisory has been given to Karl Liew and a warning to Mrs. Liew in 2018. If the maid went to MOM she could provide proof of illegal deployment and might even say it was frequent and for long periods. The Liew family would then face hefty fines and likely also “bad press”. So “silencing” the mailed likely became imperative for the
Liew family so they accuse her of stealing.

In this fiasco a stern warning is no longer adequate. The Liew family must face the full consequences of their action. What LML did for the country is irrelevant because he was paid millions for it. He did not do it pro bono.

LML must accept responsibility, apologize, resign from all posts he holds in a GLC, pay a hefty fine, pay damages to the maid and do some jail time. The Government must make an example of LML. Well-connected people cannot break the law without consequences.

Ho Ching, Shanmugam, & Pillai all have spoken out in his defence : Good man, no witch hunt, contributions to Singapore, etc. Looks like those in the corridors of power are already trying to pre-empt any big legal action to fall against him. Well if one has lied in a court of law in order to frame someone else, that is a VERY SERIOUS LEGAL matter altogether.

No amount of contributions can ever mitigate his punishment legally. After all, his contributions have already been well over compensated. Just treat him like any criminal or offender. NO MORE and NO LESS !

(Temasek reinforces the idea of rich and powerful vs poor and vulnerable?)

So… Temasek is the quintessential Sinchiapor Incorporated locked in the fists of the Emperor Dowager and its minions. It is that bastion of elitism which The Economist ranks the 4th most corrupt crony-capitalists, bunched together with the political economies of Najibian Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia and India in the Asian sphere.

The difference between us sheeples and those other crony regime nations is this: We are the citizens of Singapore, offspring of the Natural Aristocracy of our Founding Fathers, until one of them decided that this Republic was to be for his own iconic filthy rich vainglory – thereby the people of goodwill, and many poor sheeples sacrificed….

Crony priests oblivious of a hell unimagined …. heaven out of sight.
