An observation of the American system of election

America must have spent a considerable sum of money, perhaps several billions, to conduct their presidential and congressional elections every four years.
Considerable time and talent went into the process.
What did they produce? The final outcome is probably a president that is far from being the most suitable to deal with the tremendous challenges faced by the country.
Is there a more effective way to select their government leaders?
Could they have spent less time, energy and money and get a better slate of leaders?
I hope that some researchers will take a serious look at their process of electing their leaders. They need to find a new system to replace an outdated and ineffective system.
