Much soul-searching to be done on our education system?

I came across this commentary 2 days ago titled ‘Singapore’s hunt for global tech talent will benefit Singaporeans too’ by an academic.

It was no sheer coincidence that an academic’s pro-Tech Pass commentary was published weeks after the government had announced their intention to launch this special category of work passes.

Apparently, the acute shortage of tech talent has been a global phenomenon for the past decade and many countries in the world have chosen to address this by adjusting their immigration policies to lure in the next Michael Zuckerberg or Sundar Pichai.

The issue here is countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Israel, Thailand, Vietnam and even the US are courting after the same limited pool of talent.  Hence, what will be the tipping scale for the tech crème de la crème to choose Singapore over the rest – lest we forget that our political climate is not conducive for creativity, innovation & entrepreneurship?

If we can’t convince 500 of these special tech gurus to our shores, what’s next for Singapore? Don’t we have a readily available pool of local talent to tap on? After all, in one of the university rankings for engineering & technology, NTU (8th) & NUS (10th) outdid the likes of Harvard University (12th) & UCLA (19th).

In fact, the irony is that the university of the academic who wrote the article had started an Overseas College program in 2002.  This is an internship programme with a strong emphasis on technology entrepreneurship. A sizable chunk of these interns ended up working in Silicon Valley thereafter and whom the PAP found it hard to convince to return home.

It is baffling that even though multiple cohorts of local tech talent have been produced year in year out, we still end up competing with other countries for the limited pool of foreign tech gurus.

MOE claims that “Singapore’s university education prepares students not only for today’s world but also for a world where there will be jobs that have yet to be invented and challenges not yet foreseen”.

If we have the talent from our own breed (and I strongly believe that we have), then the self proclaimed visionary leaders of the PAP should attest to that statement and keep faith in our thoroughbreds.  Otherwise, there is much soul searching to be done on our education system.

The problem with PAP is that they always use the same old silly reasons to justify this and that. They have said more than once that immigration is needed because the birth rate is plunging. Fine. But they have NEVER attempted to try and resolve the issues affecting the birth rate, they just publish the occasional report with the interview from young families with the same reasons published over and over again (childcare costs, living costs).

So PAP does the absolute minimum (one time baby bonus) and declares it’s enough. They would rather spend money on white elephants like Jewel or the Founders Memorial as well as on FOREIGN scholar sponsorships instead of doing more to help these young families raise their children and hopefully have more kids.

Parents aren’t stupid and no one wants to have children when the cost of living is just so high. It’s not a short term thing either as your children need to be fed daily, clothed, educated and all that. All this costs loads of money and PAP isn’t doing much to help this group out.

Training of the mind can only occur if we do not RESTRAIN N CONSTRAIN the minds of our young including under-graduates!

    Look at HK,Thailand.
Do you see students with critical thonking here?
    Are they being stifled?
If so,how to encourage CREATIVITY in them?
Thats why our CREATIVE MINDS choose to stay in Silicon Valley and elsewhere rather than return home after getting trained???

  • Harder Truths:

Locals are third-class who must survive however they can – as taxi drivers, table cleaners or grab delivery persons. In the grand pappy scheme – locals are to serve the FT. Forget about trying to get anything else. $G citizens are doomed and they want it that way.

Bro, these idiots as you also know DO NOT want to solve the problem, they just want instant solution nia. Do you think they want to wait for about 20 years for children to grow up and start working or have aliens in their 20s be let in to work immediately? We both know the answer to this question.

  • PAP has the mandate:

Minimum wage is the way to go. I only work part time 8 hours a week overseas and my one month salary is equal to someone in Singapore working 40 hours a week. Why would I work in Singapore. The apartment I bought is freehold and paid off, never need to pay again and why would someone want buy a 99 years leasehold HDB or property in Singapore. Singaporeans are like frogs living in the well. Singaporeans believe everything that PAP feed to them.

    Its a simple bullshit technique.

All things have good and bad sides to it.

The apologists just talk about the good side and omits talking the bad sides.

Its like saying , if you chop off your head, you wont have headache anymore. But whats not mentioned is you would also be dead if your head is chopped off. See, it is true that once you are dead, you no long feel any pain.

But too many are too stupid they believe till today.

  • lim Boon Heng ???:

What Mr Lim Boon Heng doesn’t know why the real FT don’t come n our special talent training college of PRC n Indian singapore sponsored scholars went to Silicon Valley on graduation?.?? Is he faking ignorance or the old minister of lky cabinet? FG PAP cabinet should pofma this fake ther counts or both counts to fend the great honor of pap!

Anyway SIN talent committee mst be working like FBI n CIA as Trump found oit they have been bull shitting him n past presidents with their so called info n he is the only wise one finding it out n exposing them. If not these jokers in the Committee would have know the only IT n in fact all areas r the PRC not the white esp white supremacist trash who have strangely become idols of stupid Asean except for a few but these few if they r Singaporeans would have been pofmaed without need of evidence while the great justices all become somehow deaf n mute not to say brain koyat!

But of course prc talents r wise up that SIN has become more communist than prc communism but at least the prc see corrupted official, they arrest them but in Singapore the only one they sak r singaporeans who say what hongkong activist say to the govt but still alllowed to go kneeling n lowtowed yo the Brit n White supremacists in US n return to say some more then takap la no choice otherwise no face learning from SIN ministers face more impt than the citizens, citizens can die but cannot have bo face for them big time ministers!

Another FT forging his own fake degree from NUS.

    https://sg.yahoo.com/news/man-forged-nus-degree-to-cheat-parents-used-it-to-get-teaching-position-072800664.html

By the way, he was kicked out by NUS for “failing to meet examination regulations” – this means he was cheating. NUS seems to be full of these misfits.
