Crimes against helpless domestic workers

Even wild animals would not treat their preys the way these three adults treat this young helpless domestic worker from Myanmar.

The crimes committed against foreign domestic workers have worsened since the early 1980s when Filipinos came to work as domestic workers. The worst abuses I handled as a lawyer then was sexual abuse. The majority of cases involved failure to pay salaries and illegal employment. How did physical abuse become so common today?

If our government continues to be obsessed with the collection of foreign workers’ levies, we will never eradicate such cases of abuse.

I recommend our ministers to watch Al Jazeera’s documentary MAID IN SINGAPORE. This film was aired as early as September 2016 – [LINK]

Why didn’t our ministers and MOM take action in 2016 when Piang Ngaih Don died? Why delay five years to implement measures to attempt to stop such abuses? Surely it must have been known from the medical reports and cctv footages that Piang had died of severe and prolonged mental and physical abuse. What other evidence is required?

I disagree with Minister Shanmugam that investigations had to take nearly five years to complete before Gaiyathiri Murugayan, her husband, police staff sergeant Kevin Chelvam and mother, Prema S Naraynasamy were charged. What other evidence do the police need? Why was Chelvam suspended from duty in 2016 if the police force didn’t have sufficient evidence against him?

If only the AGC would concentrate on solving real crimes and not hauling good citizens to the police station and the courts over petty matters under the Public Order Act or Prevention of Falsehoods and Manipulation Act etc, real crimes may be more efficiently solved and real criminals sent to jail.

Incidentally, in MAID IN SINGAPORE, Jolovan Wham who is now spending time in prison was interviewed and offered good advice to the government. It would be wise for the ministers and MOM to consult Jolovan if they are serious in wanting to eradicate exploitation and abuse of migrant workers.

After 5 long years, the ministers come out and pretend to care. Why do I say “pretend”? If you really care, why wait 5 long years and yet nothing done?

You people have been ministers for almost 60 years. No excuse. Same with the dorms issue.

  • PAP is Finished:

Oh I see, the hubby works in police force.

The maid looks like a nice person. Looks like the bitches of the house bullied her. She was also beaten and starved. They did not let the maid have a handphone or days off so she couldn’t seek help. They mafe her a prisoner.

I understand that fucking b*t*h is on a reduced charge because of mental issues. They should hang all three involved.

  • NotMyProblem:

@Teo; you asked why take 5 years to take action against Gaiyathiri Murugayan and gang?

That was because these people did not held up a A4 size paper with “[email protected] PAP” written on it, taking photo. Otherwise police would be taking action within 2 seconds.

These PAP Ministers with Million $$$ salary are not meant to protect anyone except the PAP and its emperor.

Remember it took 4 years to clear an Indonesian maid of theft. She suffered homelessness and jobless during that time.

You think the Minister and MOM give a shit?

Even wild animals would not treat their preys the way the maid treat this woman.

Reported on Straits Times :Quote -”SINGAPORE – Ordinary people are capable of extreme e***, but two pillars – education and the law – can help keep it in check, Law Minister K. Shanmugam said on Thursday (Feb 25).

….the minister expressed his abhorrence at the abuse of Myanmar domestic helper Piang Ngaih Don.

She was 24 when she died on July 26, 2016, weighing just 24kg after losing 15kg since she started work here on May 28, 2015.

Mr Shanmugam said: “What was done to Ms Piang, the foreign domestic worker, was terrible, completely unacceptable. In fact, none of these words describe adequately what actually happened to her.”

He described how she was tied up, burned with a heated iron, denied food and hit repeatedly.

“The bestiality of the conduct is shocking,” he said.

Her employer Gaiyathiri Murugayan, 40, pleaded guilty to 28 charges on Tuesday.

She admitted that she had starved, tortured and ultimately killed Ms Piang Ngaih Don, whose ordeal suffered in the last month of her life was captured on security cameras in the home.

The prosecution is asking for life imprisonment for Gaiyathiri, while the defence is asking for a jail term of 14 years.

Another 87 charges will be considered during her sentencing at a later date.

Her husband Kevin Chelvam, 41, a police staff sergeant, was suspended from Aug 8, 2016, three days before he was charged.

He faces five charges in connection with the abuse and death of Ms Piang Ngaih Don, including a charge over removing the security cameras in an attempt to shield his wife and mother-in-law from legal punishment.

Gaiyathiri’s mother, who often stayed with the couple in the flat, was also charged in 2016.
    ..

    She currently faces 50 charges.

Their cases are still before the courts.

Yesterday, Mr Shanmugam said that their cases have taken some time because it was a complex homicide case.

He said psychiatric assessments took considerable time, and that they were completed only in April last year.

He also revealed that because of the extremely egregious nature of the case, the Attorney-General had personally directed prosecutors to press for the highest possible charges for Gaiyathiri and Prema..

The minister also mulled over the concept of e*** and how it must be dealt with..”Unquote.

Response : “and the law – can help keep it in check” ??? If the law control by e*** bast**d Kasisviswanathan has keep it in check, why is there so many repeat of such maid abuse or murder case ? Precisely, that shameless Kasisviswanathan Shanmugam failed to set law to cane e*** women backside for their violence and that is exactly why women dare to continue execute violence ! Lee Hsien Loong do not need to immediately remove Kasisviwanathan Shanmugam from the Minister of Law position ? The failure of duty and responsibility of him is too obvious to continue using such a super lazy b**$* Minister ! Look at him ,till now, still mulled over how to deal with “e***” ! Pui!

    Police officer,a culprit?
How come the pre-employment screening by the SPF is so deficient?
Are there more such dubious persons in the SPF like the Kovan Murder case and this?

Hang this e*** police officer by the balls.

Send his e*** wife to work as maid for the deceased’s family.
    See if she can survive?

This kind of e*** acts must be stopped at once.
