Converting Dependent’s Pass (DP) to Work Pass of foreign spouses

The new rule to convert Dependent’s Pass (DP) to Work Pass of foreign spouses if they wish to seek employment in Singapore is a timely one and I support the new ruling. Let me explain.

The primary objective of allowing foreign spouses in Singapore is to accompany their other half and being allowed to work on DP is a bonus and not an entitlement or a right. ( Please read that again) Let us be absolutely clear about this.

In all our years since independence, Singapore has always been welcoming of foreigners to come and work, stay or study but the Covid-19 pandemic has affected almost all countries in different ways and severity and Singapore is no exception.

Currently, many fellow citizens are unemployed and many more fairly decently educated ones are underemployed too, yet, foreign spouses working on DP numbers around 11,000. Every government owes the responsibility of looking after its own citizens first. Charity begins at home.

The easy way is to forbid foreign spouses from seeking employment in Singapore outright but we are not doing that. Like all working foreigners in Singapore, if they wish to work, they must possess a valid work pass. That is official walking of fairness and transparency.

To put it bluntly, the Singapore government was elected by Singaporeans to look after their interest and survival, first and foremost. It owes that basic responsibility to each and every citizen. It doesn’t owe that responsibility to foreign spouses.

I would like to urge Association of Women for Action and Reasearch (AWARE) not to miss or worse still, hijacks bigger national objectives with their sweet rhetorics and clever arguments. I do not rule out any hidden agendas.

I am mindful of the potential trade-offs that this decision may incur such as diminishes Singapore’s attractiveness to expatriates etc but all things considered, this decision is, to me, the lesser evil at least for the next few years.

Think.

  • 11,000:

With 3 million foreigners living in Sg, the PAP is working on 11,000.

PAP is not stopping them. Just a simple procedure to change DP to EP. “Open leg” policy remains.

Simon, why you so easily satisfied (conned)?

The real issue here is this – can PAP be trusted?

For me it is an absolute NO.

Any data, figures, or statement made by PAP , I don’t trust.

Just look at the recent past, it is obvious that PAP is trying to hide the truth.

And when the public speaks of the truth, PAP just calls it fake news.

It’s too easy for the PAP that it’s now easier for them to hide the truth.

    Sad

  • Harder Truths:

If you read this correctly then it is a very good tactic by regime to increase fraudulently the number of workers without bringing in more FT.

Think about it – just convert all DP to WP and done INSTANTLY. How does this benefit locals?

Does not mean regime is stopping DP. Does not mean WP needs to have ‘minimum’ requirements. Who decides? Regime. There is no restriction especially for CECA. Is this another cunning plan to increase CECA workers under the table?

    Hahahaha kenna main again.
