Japan to release a million metric tons of contaminated water from the destroyed Fukushima nuclear plant into the sea

Fukushima nuclear plant

This commentary may not interest most people but still, it is a very important issue to air. For those who are interested and care, please ponder deeper.

Japan has announced that it will release more than a million metric tons of contaminated water from the destroyed Fukushima nuclear plant into the sea in two year’s time and the whole exercise will take decades. China, South Korea and environmental activists etc have alearly voiced sharp and strong opposition to it. Singapore is so small and so far away from Japan, about 5,000 km. Should we be concerned?

Japan’s objective in its decision is to achieve Fukushima’s recovery. Japan defends its decision by saying that apart from tritium, a radioactive material that is not harmful in small amount and cannot be removed from the water, other radionuclides can be reduced to levels allowed for release…

More than 50 years after the Americans sprayed Agent Orange (AO) chemicals onto Vietnam during the Vietnam war, innocent Vietnamese civilians who contracted cancer, blinded and/or badly deformed by AO are still paying very heavy prices in their everyday lives and here, we are not just talking about chemicals but nuclear contaminated water!

Although Japan is a friendly country, a major investor and a major market for Singapore, the position that the Singapore government takes on this issues is nonetheless, important and telling.

If it is truly safe like what the Japanese government and the nuclear plant operator claim, then those radioactive contaminated water can and should be released inside Japan and not into the oceans. To put it bluntly, the world’s oceans do not belong to Japan alone and they are not Japan’s dumping ground.

Going forward, I do not want anybody, Singaporeans or foreigners consuming seafood or swimming in the sea to contract any form of cancer. Never forget, too, that we are a maritime nation.

Pap foreign minister should be more than just serving coffee, aka, Trump and Kim summit in Singapore. On issues such as this, it will demand wisdom, tact, principles, firmness, the steadiness and steadfastness in defending our interests and more. When the time comes, I am not sure if that Vivi fella or any other pap foreign minister can truly measures up?

Think.

Si liao lo! The water in the South China Sea and Pacific will be contaminated with toxic waste. All the fishes that come from there would pose a health hazard. Even the soil, rivers, canals will be contaminated through evaporation and precipitation of these ocean water. Humans have made the planet uninhabitable. One country gives us the virus, another gives us cancer!

This is such a BIG BIG thing. Japan to poison the entire world. Those nuclear poisoned water will flow to every ocean, every sea, every river, every lake.

Contaminated seafood will be shipped everywhere including those places far from the seas.

No place is safe from this.

Any country that keeps quiet is complicit in this. It is the slow but certain mass murder of humans everywhere.

The Japanese government proposed on Tuesday (13th) that the nuclear waste water stored in the Fukushima nuclear power plant should be diluted and discharged into the sea 2 years later. After the wastewater is treated, it will mainly contain a radioactive substance called Tritium. According to the authorities, after dilution, a maximum of 22 megabeck of liquid Tritium will be discharged every year, and the concentration will also be diluted to 1,500 beck per liter, which is 1/7 of WHO drinking water standard.

From the report of “Zhong News”, according to a mainland government approval issued by the Mainland Ministry of Ecology and Environment in 2017, the Daya Bay nuclear power base has a total of six units, and the annual liquid Tritium emission limit reaches 225 megabeck, which is 10x Fukushima’s future annual emissions.

According to data from the Hong Kong Nuclear Power Inv Co, a joint venture with the Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant, in the past ten years, the liquid Tritium emissions from the Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant averaged 20% of the upper limit, which is about 49.5 megabeck. It is more than doubled compared with the standard set by the Japanese government.

The report also pointed out that in addition to Daya Bay, the Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant hundreds of km away, requested the Ministry of Ecology and Environment for the annual discharge of nuclear waste water standards in 2008 to be: 1st & 2nd phases expansion units alone, the upper limit of liquid Tritium emissions was reached at 125 megabeck, more than 5x the emission set by Fukushima.

The National Nuclear Safety Administration of China replied at the time that this amount was acceptable, so it was approved. Emission limit of Fujian Fuqing Nuclear Power Plant also exceeds Japan’s Fukushima standard.

CCP speaker Zhao Lijian: The two should not be confused.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian responded to public news reports on Thursday, stating that the highest level of nuclear accident occurred at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Otherwise, there is no need for the Japanese to seal the water tightly in these years. The two cannot be confused.”

As of the end 2020, there were 16 nuclear power plants in mainland China, 49 nuclear power units were in operation. There are 4 nuclear power plants within 200 km of Hong Kong alone.

“Three independent UN human rights experts expressed deep regret on Thursday over Japan’s decision to discharge potentially still radioactive Fukushima nuclear plant water into the ocean, warning that it could impact millions across the Pacific region.

While Japan said that the tritium levels are very low and do not pose a threat to human health, scientists warn that in the water, the isotope organically binds to other molecules, moving up the food chain affecting plants and fish and humans.

Moreover, they say the radioactive hazards of tritium have been underestimated and could pose risks to humans and the environment for over 100 years.”

    UN supporters, where are you?

    Greenpeace also says not ok.

“TEPCO/Japan continues to misrepresent and selectively ignore basic scientific facts on radioactive tritium.”

In short, the radioactive water is more dangerous than what they say.

First of all, no one can be thrilled about Japan dumping nuclear waste water into the Ocean. But as usual the Chinese trolls never tell the whole truth, incapable of distinguishing the crux and thrust of any topic.

    https://www.fda.gov/news-events/public-health-focus/fda-response-fukushima-daiichi-nuclear-power-facility-incident

“Tritium presents an extremely low human and animal health risk if consumed and any health risk would be further minimized with the dilution effects of discharge into the ocean. Furthermore, FDA has no evidence that radionuclides from the Fukushima incident are present in the U.S. food supply at levels that are unsafe or would pose a public health concern and believes this action will have no effect on the safety of foods imported from Japan and U.S. domestic food products, including seafood caught off the U.S. coast.”

Yet, Chinese trolls will lie and say that US banned the Japanese seafood but allowed Japan to release the nuclear waste water; which in any case is supposed to be 2 years later. Typical Chinese trolls will nitpick but never honestly read the links they post.

FDA is the Gold standard here, please furnish a comparable Chinese agency.

The bigger question here is, do we proliferate nuclear plants?

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/chinadialogue.net/en/energy/5808-chinese-nuclear-disaster-highly-probable-by-2-3/%3famp

China needs nuclear energy as it is poorly resourced in fossil oil. From the above article, theoretically, nuclear plant should run into problem only after 20,000 reactor yrs.

    1. “The US and former Soviet Union had been operating nuclear power for 267 and 162 reactor-years respectively before a major accident occurred. Japan managed to get to 1,442 reactor-years before Fukushima struck.”

2.”The only country with more than 50 nuclear power plants not to have suffered a major accident is France, with 58 nuclear power stations and a total of 1,519 reactor-years.”

    3.”The Great Leap Forward mentality

Why did the US and former Soviet Union see nuclear accidents so soon? Apart from a lack of experience and immature technology, another factor was the Cold War mentality – both were fighting to be the world’s number one nuclear power.

Similar attitudes exist in China today. Nuclear decision-makers aim to build up to 500 nuclear power stations by 2050, exceeding the current global total of 443, and allowing the country to claim the world’s number one spot.

This is nothing but Great Leap Forward thinking. If these attitudes continue, we will likely see “most probable” will become the “actual”. ”

The Fukushima accident is a reminder that nuclear energy is a double-edged sword, with extremely sharp edges. Hopefully, they can find a better solution.

Thank u BK, the link is a good read and a timely reminder.

According to 2019 published data, China has 47 operating nuclear power plant, and 34 under construction with 8 more in planning.

I am so happy to see so many nuclear power plants queuing along the coast.

Like BK said, it is unfortunate and no one hold pleasure with Fukushima’s nuclear disaster situation. Yet these 50c hamsters always jump into the wagon as usual and speed all the way flying to the moon with eyes closed.

Having said, i would like to bring attention back to SG on our first nuclear power plant. Perhaps by 2035? Or by 2040? It is a matter of time.

By end 2030, CN could be having more than 70 nuclear power plants all along the coast. It is no brainer why nuclear power plants need access to plenty water and near coast to discharge nuclear waste water.

In the case of Japan Fukushima, such discharge is unfortunate, at the minimum, it was announced to the world to even provide a chance for CCP and their hamsters and doggie to flame it.

Come back to the case of China nuclear power plants, even officially they approved and admitted they had discharged and continue releasing nuclear waste water into the river and sea which were 2x, 5x and even 10x what Fukushima planned to do 2 years later.

Asking hamsters to think is truly too much and might risk burning all the neuron to brain, and discharge shitty waste. Thus conclusion is to continue get info feeds from the master, be brain-washed, eat shit and die will be much peaceful.

Truth be told Im against the idea of dumping nuclear waste into the ocean. Many Japanese citizens are against it.

But the question that must be addressed is about nuclear plants as a source of energy. We should not allowed it in Spore.

China carbon promises are partly delivered thru more nuclear plants. China public protests against nuclear plants are building up.

But the problem is, most economic growth hinges on sufficient energy delivery. Xi plans for both military and economic growth must mean more reliance on nuclear energy. This reliance made worse by other fuel supply chains choking.

The danger of accidents are real.

Note: Fukushima’s nuclear disaster happened in Mar 2011.

There are always good intentions, good people, never lacking of experts in CN trying to improve life and safety for their own country and fellow countrymen. In this report, as objective as it was meant to be, it also leaked the deep concerns in the practice of those high up among the officials and authorities. These officials (including universities) mostly performed at the expense of their people, hiding behind official secrecy, controlled media and complex technicalities which most people could not or do not bother to understand.
