The Tan Tock Seng Hospital Covid-19 cluster

Channel New Asia gave a detailed report about the covid cluster at Tan Tan Seng Hospital (TTSH). [LINK]

A total of 40 cases were linked to this cluster – 23 patients, 9 staff and 8 visitors.

The infection probably started with the admission of the 57 year old man (case 62561) on 18 April 2021.

A nurse (case 62571) was symptomatic and test positive on 27 April. She had been vaccinated and was still infected.

All of the cases were connected with wards 7D and 9D. There were patients in these wards, or were people working or visiting these wards.

Here are my observations.

a) Most of these cases were detected due to proactive testing of all patients, staff and visitors to these wards.

b) Three cases were symptomatic – the initial patient, the nurse and the doctor.

c) The infected staff and visitors do not appear to transmit the virus to their family members. Is this an indication that secondary infection of asymptomatic cases was low?

d) Several patients in TTSH had to be given oxygen therapy. Most of them were elderly and were admitted into the hospital due to other health conditions. The covid infection is harmful to them.

Although this is a large cluster, I am personally not alarmed at this happening. It appears to me that the virus can be spread by a super spreader, but most of the infected people are not harmed (except if they have an existing serious health condition) and do not pass the infection to other people.

I believe that the virus is present in the community, but is at a mild level and do not harm most healthy people (although a small number might be more severely infected).

I do not think that the situation is dire and requires a serious response, such as a higher level of restriction (i.e. a return to phase 2 of the circuit breaker).

I may be wrong.

I take umbrage and offence that textbook Tan says this. This virus can kill and absolutely NO ONE wants another Dorscon Red like last year. Better to be safe than to be sorry so I would rather have tightened restrictions for a few weeks to see if the situation stabilises.

    Mr. Tan,
You are neither doctor nor an infectious disease expert. It’s a good thing you can only offer a layman’s opinion and you are not in charge.
You are thinking like the politicians in India. An infectious disease can rapidly get out of control. And it might not affect just old people. Viruses do mutate, and quickly. One virulent strain can do major damage. I am not always fond of the politicians in charge but I am willing to follow their guidelines. They are probably more gung-ho than you about opening up the economy and they have more information and advice than you can lay your hands on. I would rather listen to them first.

Reported on Straits Times :Quote-”Malaysia faces grim outlook as new Covid-19 daily cases may hit 7,000 by end-May

    Hazlin Hassan
    Malaysia Correspondent…
KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s top health official on Saturday (May 8) painted a grim picture of the country’s struggle against the coronavirus pandemic, saying new cases could hit 7,000 a day by the end of this month.

Malaysia was initially projected to record about 3,000 cases by mid-May, and 5,000 cases by the end of the month, said the Health Ministry’s director-general, Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

“It was projected that Malaysia would record 5,000 cases by the end of May and around 3,000 cases by mid-month,” he told a press conference at the ministry in Putrajaya, his first since March 4.

“But now, two weeks before the middle of the month, we have recorded more than 3,000 cases,” he said, adding that with daily cases exceeding 4,000 in the first week of May, the figure could worsen if people fail to comply with health protocols.

“We expect 5,000 by mid-May now, and by the end of May, cases may rise to even 6,000 to 7,000, depending on us, whether we break the chain of infection.”

He added: “These are a very crucial two to four weeks for us to contain the infection. We cannot succeed without the collaboration of the people. Stay at home if possible. Have an in-house Hari Raya among yourselves just like last year. Last year after Hari Raya, there was no surge of infections. Why can’t we do it again?”..

“Aggressive” Covid-19 variants from abroad are already spreading in several Malaysian states, with more young people being infected, Dr Noor Hisham said.

He had on Friday warned that critically-ill patient numbers had hit a record high of 506 admissions, and said the government is adding more beds to intensive care units.

His warning comes just ahead of the Hari Raya festival on Thursday, when people typically throw caution aside by travelling to meet families and friends.

Even though travelling between states and districts is banned, Hari Raya visiting is allowed within districts, and capped at between 15 and 25 people, depending on which tier of the shutdown the state is in.

Daily cases hit 4,519 on Saturday after Friday’s 4,498, which was then a three-month high.

Malaysia until now had logged only three occasions when the daily tally exceeded 5,000 cases, at the end of January.

The highest number of cases per day recorded was 5,728 on Jan 31….”Unquote.

Response : Dumb Malaysia may be aiming to be the third highest corona virus country in the world after b**** India.Still want to celebrate Hari Raya and why e**l b**** Josephine Teo Li Min never block off Malaysians from coming here ? I can safely say that Sinkieland will NEVER end up in Doscorn Red even IF the daily death toll from Covid-19 figures is 50% of India’s.

The reason being, that there is too much to lose for the LEEDers, who are only interested in dollars and cents, the welfare of peasants being secondary.

    What do you think?

Going Dorscon Red will be an admission of failure by PAP. This will never happen. PAP like “Lee Con You” is so ARROGANT it will never admit it made a mistake. Why? Because it opens the door to the possibility it made other mistakes (and it made plenty). That is why Singaporeans are in shit.

The problem is even PAP cause covid-19 to spread and economy lockdown by letting foreigner in to spread covid-19, the next election PAP is likely to win. So PAP is not caring. There is no consequences for letting foreigner in to spread covid-19. PAP wants to open Singapore to foreign labour and 61% has support it by voting. 61% support themselves to be sick and killed by covid-19 by voting, such fools I don’t know what to say to them. 61% Fools support fools, we know demise of Singapore is near. Beyond 39% power, together Singaporean, we watch failures by failure. Recent events, everyone see it- change of successor, cabinet reshuffle, $100 billions budgets, SPH, SIA, covid-19 problems and many shocking events. It is not business as usual. Please wake up the truth, don’t vote PAP.

About one-third of the daily cases in the last 2 days are from the community. Still can manage. If that number reaches 50%, then people should start to be alarmed. Why are there still imported cases when the border is now closed to travellers from high risk countries? Is there a ban or no ban, or is there a loop-hole somewhere?

A 27-year-old woman died after she climbed over a railing and jumped down from the sixth floor of Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) on Wednesday (May 12).

The police received a call for assistance at 11 Jalan Tan Tock Seng at 12.10pm, they told Stomp in response to queries.

“A 27-year-old woman was reported to have been found lying unconscious at the Basement 2 escalator lobby of the Tan Tock Seng Medical Centre,” police added.

“She was attended to by hospital doctors and subsequently pronounced dead.”

Police are investigating the unnatural death case.

TTSH said in a statement on Facebook that the woman was on follow-up care at its clinic and had attended a clinic appointment in the morning accompanied by her family.

“Witnesses had found her at the Basement 2 escalator lobby of our Medical Centre,” said the hospital on Wednesday afternoon.

“CCTV footage shows that she had climbed over the railing and jumped off at Level 6.

“Our medical staff attended to her immediately. She was brought to our Emergency Department and despite our efforts, had later succumbed to her injuries.

“Our doctor and medical social worker are with her family to offer them our full support.”

Investigations are ongoing and TTSH is working with the police on the matter.

TTSH added: “Our heartfelt sympathies and deepest condolences to her family. We will continue to render assistance to the family during this difficult period.”"Unquote.

Response : Maybe she see the Tan Tock Seng hospital bill charges ,she got scared off by their expensive bill and so she learn “skydiving” ,possible reason ????
