Taking the Covid-19 vaccine is now a national imperative

For the last 18 months, we have been battling an invisible enemy without respite.

In stealth, the enemy travels across borders incognito, hiding in plain sight, stealing a ride into our very midst.

The troops it marshals for its destructive aims are none other than us ourselves. It recruits anyone regardless of passport, age, or occupation – and whether vaccinated or unvaccinated – to be its unwittingly secret agents, its unwilling accomplices and its involuntary soldiers.

The invisible enemy defies capture. Instead, it forces us to take captive our innocents, to serve as prisoners-of-war in its stead. To ringfence the contagion, close contacts of infected persons are identified and sequestered.

I have myself had to serve a mandatory quarantine order. The isolation was an ordeal. I never want to do it again nor do I wish it on anyone.

Besides damaging our physical health, the enemy also wreaks havoc by disrupting our economy and damaging our social relations.

The enemy deploys the most effective weapon of destruction tested by all histories of nations: Divide and Conquer. We are seeing people turning against each other, becoming fragmented shards provoked to blame, name, and shame.

In the struggle to cope with the disruptions and economic fallouts, there is every temptation to cut corners and to steal a march. Some will remain resolute and impassive, but some will falter and fall.

Those who have acted irresponsibly must face the consequences; but in our haste to blame others for recklessness, let us not forget who the real culprit is and how devious the culprit is. For the enemy has up the ante by evolving into something more contagious than before.

Let’s face it – we are at war. Tough times require tough responses and decisive action.

After 18 months of rolling border closures and lockdowns, our economy is battered and our lives are tattered. Shutting our gates, hunkering down, and remaining isolated, is not sustainable. The enemy is cunning and determined to stick around.

After 18 months of battle, it is clear that a successful national vaccination programme is the best hope to exit the pandemic. It is also clear that there is a limit to our endurance.

No one has guaranteed that vaccines are 100 per cent safe. But what are the alternatives? What are we up against? Is time on our side?

For every argument, there will be a counter-argument. For every set of data, there will be a set of alternative data. There is a time and place for healthy scepticism, reasonable debate, and careful evaluation.

But there must come a time to make a personal decision – to take up the personal risk of making such a decision – and to take decisive action.

As I see it, taking the vaccine is now a national imperative. Once the nation is well-vaccinated, we can get on the road to restoring what the pandemic has taken away from us.

Helping others will always involve personal risks and detriments. But we need to unite our efforts to save our country, our economy, and our future from the destructive effects of the pandemic.

To those who have volunteered to be vaccinated, I say thank you for your sacrifice and the risk you took, for sake of others and for loved ones.

In this pandemic which affects us all, there is a big picture to consider. In the big picture, so long as the nation is insufficiently vaccinated, our borders will never be fully opened, our economy will be hampered, and people’s lives and livelihoods will remain in limbo.

To those eligible for vaccination but are hesitant to take the vaccine, do consider joining the vaccination drive. In my humble opinion, time is not on our side.

THE UNVACCINATED may have an unknown proportion among them which attained immunity protection in the last 18 months.

These lot may have already infected – in effect silent asymptomatic spreaders once but no more. That is to say, their infection (unknown to them and undetected thus far) may have triggered their own bodily immunity fightback and prevail.

On the other side of the ledger, the mutation seems to have slowed down. Is Covid Delta the last strain that will fade out soon?

The vaccines now in use seems ineffective of their claimed efficacy protection. Just look at the Jurong Port/KTV clusters where 3/4 of the infected are fully vaccinated, right?

This cluster proportion is higher than the population-wide averages (which include children) reveals the futility of vaccination outcome sought.

SO IT IS UNDERSTANDABLE THAT SOME DON’T WANT TO TAKE RISKS of the unknown when the known outcome is so dismally defeating of outcome.

Tommy koh wants PAP to punish those who are unvaccinated.
He’s always a mouthpiece of PAP & many Singaporeans know that.

My tale to Tommy koh is this – how about giving Singaporeans suggestions how those who allowed the virus to enter the country as they’re supposed & paid to do.

Punishment for Singaporeans but to the PAP?
O well, just fix the leak & away you go.

Well, there’s nothing new under the sun, nothing new from PAP dudes too.

If PAP takes up his suggestion, Singaporeans must remember this moment & give out punishment in our way when time comes.

    It’s all fair game.

Some might not be keen to get vaccinated seeing such poor outcome in the Jurong Port/KTV clusters COMPOUNDED by their own known health vulnerability and compelling personal circumstances.

TO EACH HIS OR HER OWN.

Before I even want to comment on the other points which Jeannette has raised, I would ask that she clarify the following statement:

In the big picture, so long as the nation is insufficiently vaccinated, our borders will never be fully opened, our economy will be hampered, and people’s lives and livelihoods will remain in limbo.

Is she saying “as a matter of fact” that once the nation has been successfully vaccinated (regardless if it means some dying and some suffering serious injuries), the LEEders WILL:

Fully open the borders, our economy will NOT be hampered, and people’s lives and livelihoods will NOT remain in limbo.

Or is it just her opinion and a figment of her imagination? I certainly did not read any LEEders making such promises.

Response : well said. Assuming Mai Hum is able to “URGE” 99.9% of the population(BUT NOT COUNTING don’t know how many hundreds thousands of FTs and FWs NOT VACCINATED roaming all over the shop in SinKapore)IS SHE IMPLYING THAT Mai Hum can ORDER THE OPENING OF OUR BORDER AND BY EXTENSION RESUMING HIS OPEN-LEG POLICY AGAIN! What to do with the 0.01% WHO ARE UNABLE to be VACCINATED for one reason or another? Just a few of these folks MAY CAUSE INFECTION, Right? So Send them to the incinerator!

Maybe Tommy should suggest that the LEEders execute all those who are unvaccinated or segregate them on a remote island that Sinkiepore owns?

How difficult is it to pass such a law when the parliament is owned by a single party? I am sure the co-driver would agree to such a law.

    @ TRE Techie

THERE ARE COMPELLING REASONS for being so.

TRE Techie: Or is it just her opinion and a figment of her imagination? I certainly did not read any LEEders making such promises.

@ JCA got it all wrong of border opening. We CAN’T open Singapore border unilaterally WHEN MUCH OF THE REST OF THE WORLD IS SHUT AND REMAINS SHUT.

Australia already told the world it won’t be opening its border until April next year, maybe only. And hope of an air travel air bubble with Singapore has already been shut down once. How many time the proposed air bubble with HK been postponed already?

China is also closed for border opening, so is much of the rest of the world – the resemblance of that is in Tokyo Olympics – the world sent in their athletes to compete MINUS THE AUDIENCE presence and participation. Japan’s opening of the Olympic is ONE-SIDED. It is simply WELCOME, but where is the visitors coming in lockdown in their own countries?

Finally, we are NOT SAFE of opening our border even if 100% vaccinated when the rest of the world is UNSAFE AND FACING LOCKDOWNS ROUND AFTER ROUND.

As long as the rest of the world is not vaccinated with AN EFFECTIVE VACCINE, survival of each countries will depend on

    - doing one’s best in the circumstance
    - and life’s inevitable disruption will have to be tolerated
    - and be extra cautionary of personal hygiene practices including social distancing.

AND WAIT FOR THE STORM TO PASS of a slow decay end of the pandemic – EXACTLY LIKE I BEEN THROUGH CYCLONES SWEEPING PAST ME IN NORRTHERN AUSTRALIA a few times of personal encounters.

NOBODY CAN DEFEAT THE CYCLONE WHEN IT STRIKES.

Knowingly ignoring all the risks, you chose to comply hoping it will end and things will go back to normal. It’s exactly because of your compliance that it will never end. New variants, more booster shots. End of the day, it’s always about the money and else matters.

  • @Randolph

I am quite confident that the pharma companies (Temasick included) would not want the C19 pandemic to go away, for the plain and simple reason that it’s a cash cow.

I am also quite sure that for those taking the mRNA shots, there will be 3rd, 4th, 5th bla bla bla bla subsequent booster shots in the years to come, as long as the C19 virus is alive.

Also maybe the PAPies would also want the C19 to continue because it makes the Sillyzens so “manageable and controllable”, that would explain all the U-turns and clearly ineffective half-baked policies in place supposedly to contain the C19.

    What do you think?

If vaccination hit 90%, is Singapore going to open up and let 10% get covid-19 become seriously sick and die? Remember the foreigner population is large and many not vaccinated, can get infected and spread covid-19. Is government going to turn Singapore into hell by opening Singapore? I mean it actually make no sense. It is a foolish plan. There are people who are sick, not able to vaccine and people who chose not vaccine. Government cannot just ignore people like that. If government priority is about million dollar salary, I wonder why is government so concern about people well-being, vaccination. Does the government care about seniors when they have no money to survive?

    @ left behind

GREAT POIGNANT comments, thanks for sharing.

Those with side-effects complications (immediate and future unknown for the rest) ARE ALL TRAPPED WITH A LIFE-TIME HEALTH CARE COSTS.

Who is helping the distressed family with such injurious damage. It is okay for millionaires. But what about poverty-stricken peasants?

And as long as we depend on foreign labors, MOST WILL BE FINANCIALLY DESPERATE, they will bribe corrupt health officials to give them FALSE HEALTH CLEARANCE VACCINATION CERTIFICATES and they walk in.

So what the “fiack” is achieved if all native citizens were to be vaccinated when 40% plus of the residents are foreigners – forget the multiple folds of tourist arrivals?

PROBABLY MORE JURONG FISHING PORT/KTVV CLUSTERS of even more density of re-infection than the unvaccinated locals.

What if the virus mutates again in worst viciousness of destruction spread and killings?

  • Reality?:

Reality is the vaccinated may be the one spreading the Virus now.
Proven that the vaccinated also can get infected again.
Hard to detect as they do not have severe symptoms like those from unvaccinated.
