A political succession crisis not just in Malaysia, but in Singapore as well?

I refer to the article ‘Malaysia PM Muhyiddin set to resign in audience with King after failure to regain majority’ (ST, 16 Aug).

In this connection, a friend Ying (not her real name) casually mentioned to me that Singapore’ leadership succession does not look too good at the moment after DPM Heng Swee Keat stepped down as successor, slightly more than 4 months ago.

Political analysts who are familiar with Singapore’s political situation would know that there are 3 men who are widely regarded as the forerunner to Singapore’s premiership (Who will be Singapore’s next PM with Heng Swee Keat stepping aside?; ST, 23 Apr).

Each of them, arguably, has had arguably, a somewhat strong setback not seen in the 3G leaders, in Singapore’s history.

Chan Chun Sing appears to have in a way, a rather strong public dislike (‘An Attempt to Understand Why So Many People Dislike Minister Chan Chun Sing’, RICE media 15 Dec 2018). What will this translate into when the electorate goes to the polls?

A friend whom I spoke to believes that should Chan be named as the successor before the GE, then he may possibly, not be too surprised, if the PAP loses (at least) 1/3 of its seats. Mind you, GE2020 shows that at least 2 GRCs and 2 SMCs in which the incumbent won by less than 5%.

Ong Ye Kung lost his first election battle in Aljunied in GE2011 against a WP ‘A-team’. He subsequently took part in GE2015 under Khaw Boon Wan’s Sembawang stronghold. With less than 7 years of political experience. So, it is hard to see how he may be able to obtain the ‘buy in’ of the majority of Singaporeans.

Also, it appears that Ong believes that a one party rule may be the way for Singapore to succeed. However, this may not be so relevant in recent times anymore, given that the PAP has shown that they do not have a monopoly of talent, especially in the way the 4G leaders have handled the pandemic. Will the people remember this again?

Lawrence Wong may therefore, arguably, appear to be the strongest choice at the moment. However, Wong appears to have ‘only’ 10 years of political experience – less than 5 of which were in key ministries. In addition, he was only opted into the PAP’s CEC for the first time in Nov 2020. What does this say about his popularity within the party?

With no clear successor in sight and a very short runaway till the next GE, will Singapore too, possibly face a situation of weak leadership whereby the Government may have not enough time to build a support base?

Why you people look at such low levels for the big talent? Singapore’s time has arrived for a woman chief. Follow Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan, Thailand, etc.

    Leong Kor,

Great and insightful comments. That’s why Mai Hum and Wifey have decided in the recent reshuffling of cards, put CCS(Cotton Comes from Shis)in a very very SAFE PLACE to SQUAT there until the current INTENSE HEAT and SHITS generated by Covid19 is over or near to the next GE, whichever is EARLIER! The other 2 STOOGES, LW and Ong Toh, they die their business!

  • opposition dude:

None of the overpaid 4G has the ability to be PM, not even stroke Heng. We can see just how badly tey fumbled last year when they took their own damn sweet time to impose a lockdown and waited until the cases started spreading like crazy.

And then again this year they so casually told us all that the virus penetrated the airport’s defences and lo and behold Delta is here. Caused quite a number of deaths up until today too. And no one has forgotten the many clusters at TTSH/Jem/airport/Bt Merah/Fishery/KTV too.

Even the current 3G aren’t any much better from the way they have handled the pandemic. Whoever is the chosen one from the 4G will have a hard fight once he/she becomes PM. It’s not about which person in the party that everyone likes but whether the person can get work done once he/she is PM.

And as we have seen so far of the current one, who has 40 years of being in politics mind you, his performance has so far been sorely lacking. Last year’s election results bear this out. Losing another GRC, more opposition MPs in parliament and a reduced vote share after he naively thought Covid would just simply make us vote for him and get 70% without needing to do anything HA HA HA!

    Don’t be so racist!

If President can come from Malay race, why not PM who can come from a non-chinese race?

It is meaningless whatever we pledge as citizens of SG regardless of race, etc if we can’t accept a non-Chinese as PM!

The most suitable person among them is THARMAN.
IT IS A WASTE OF TALENT.
    Who is LW?
    WHO IS OYKan?
    WHO is kee-chiu?
Actually ,LEE AH LONG shud step dwon.
During his tenure, many sgs suffer in various social-economic aspects.

Its a shame to the mentorship of lky.
Or,maybe DR GOH KS shud have remained in Cabinet to nurture talents instead of being replaced?

A succession plan for the Incorporated Dynasty, or are we talking about the political catharsis of the Republic of Singapore?

I hope PM Singh doesn’t believe he can collect $183,000/mth salary + also hidden CEO remuneration$$$ from any government linked companies!

You want to play corporate $$$ politics you jolly well get out of parliament…..

  • Lie Con u eat shit:

The HARD TRUTH as to why LKY does not want to WAKE UP FROM HIS GRAVE is that he is SO ASHAME OF PINKY’S performance as a SON and as PM of SNGAPORE.
In all his years as a PM he has not found someone to succeed him. If PINKY were to drop dead tomorrow SINGAPORE HAS NO PM in waiting. We do not even have a caretaker PM. Singapore will be in a worst shit than what Malaysia is in right now.
Heng Sweet Cake has already thrown in the towel. Now it is one of the three monkeys sitting in the MTF who are expected to be the next sit warming PM till PINKY junior takes over. Everyone knows that none of these three monkeys is PM caliber. They all have a very little political experience and STILL WET BEHIND THE EARS. The HARD TRUTH is they all score a F9 in handeling the covid 19 pendamic.
It is VERY UNBECOMING OF PINKY not to prepare the future PM of SINGAPORE BY NOW.PINKY is not IMMORTAL and he looked VERY SICK during the last National Day speech. The next PM has NO RUNWAY BEFORE TAKING OFF.As for Pinky he was hand held by the FATHER and HOLY GOH for twenty years before he became PM. Even with that his performance is half past six. GOD HAVE MERCY ON THE NEXT PM OF SINGAPORE.

Why are Heartland Retailers suffering poor business?
Covid aside,MANY sgs lost their jobs and cut down on spending.
They are the heart-landers who received a meagre $600 out of a per capita (of sgs) of $23.6K as per Tin Pei ling

    Meanwhile,why are stocks/shares rising?
Well-heeled sgs and FTs are buying with their extra money.
These highly paid receive big sums of furlough fron PAP GOVT after they raid sgs’ reserves of $100 Billion!

Why are common sgs so accepting of the govt’s unfair distribution of SGS’ RESERVES ,even letting themselves get short-changed by almost $23K?

IT IS SO EASY TO CON sga.

Even STUPID FTs ars laughing all the way to the bank .
They must be thinking this is better than SHANGRI-LA.

WAKE UP ,sinkaPOOR or get farked more!

For Mr. Singh to be the PM, the WP must first win the General Election to form the new govt. At this point in time, they seem content to play second fiddle! That suits the PAP very well!

Tech: IMHO, no one in WP is suitable to be the PM, Puppet President post I have no objection.

LW is clearly the front-runner but he has a short runway from now until 2024/25 to lead the Party towards the next GE. However, if he continues to walk in the shadow of LHL, he will not be able to demonstrate his full potential by the next GE. He has to step out of LHL’s shadow. An opportune time to officially present him to the people would be at the National Day Rally when the PM gives his speech.

Tech: Of the 3 court jesters, I would go for LW anytime if I had to choose. I find him so “wang sa” and every time I look at him, I cannot get myself to be angry even if I wanted to, he is so damned cute and comedy. Since parliament is purportedly full of clowns already, won’t mind him heading the circus. lol

I had said many moons ago,

    “Kick them all out”

Any minister asking for millions dollars pay HAS TO GO !

1.5%GDP PER ANNUM TO GET BONUSES OF 12 to 15 months,

    HAS TO GO !

Today we see Indians imports breaking MCO , has no respect for law
but staying here past ten years is a reason we still keep them ???

  • Indian Rojak:

Chinese is a 75% overwhelming majority in Sgp.

It is imperative that its leader is also chinese.

Many voters like myself prefer a Chinese as we are not ready for a non-chinese PM.

Taman Jurong as Sgp PM is an absulutely NO NO.

He also stupidly said in parliament that with a gross salary of 1K per month you can affordably buy an HDB 3rm flat. What a JOKE !!!

Until Malusia is open for a Chinese PM, we still vote PAP to preserve this status quo.

Only when Malusia has a Chinese as PM, then come and talk.

Remember, the Tengku booted Sgp out of Malusia is because of this big headache in that he couldn’t govern with an island full of chinese people at a time of frequent racial riots between the chinese and malays.

So now, you want a non-chinese PM for Sgp ????

    Don’t be a fool.

And I say you better wake up your idea!!!

Response: If WP, PSP, PV or any other Party will promise the people at the next GE that they will cut all Ministerial salaries by 50% and require all MPs to be full-time, maybe got chance to win a sweeping victory. However, the quality of their candidates have to be on par or better than the PAP.
