SDA’s statement on Pasir Ris Flooding

I was sending my son to school this morning before heading to work when I noticed the water level build-up at Pasir Ris Drive 12.

Unfortunately, this build-up later erupted into full-blown flooding, trapping motorists in their vehicles and injuring several persons.

I wish the victims of this mishap a speedy recovery.

This is not a common occurrence in Pasir Ris – not at least in the decade that I have been living here.

My belief is today’s flooding is in part due to the extensive recent deforestation of land in Pasir Ris and Tampines.

Deforestation commonly leads to flooding during rainy seasons because there are much fewer trees to absorb rainwater, prevent surface run-off, and minimise soil erosion.

This puts a strain on our drainage system, and if the infrastructure is not adequate to hold the load, flooding is inevitable during rain storms.

Much of the forested area in Pasir Ris Industrial Drive 1 and Pasir Ris Farmway, as well as Tampines Ave 10 and Tampines Link, have been cleared to build roads and high-rise housing developments.

Adding to that, more forests are being cleared at Pasir Ris Drive 3, about the size of 10 football fields, to build more high-rise HDB flats.

The SDA has, for over a year now, advocated for the preservation of our green spaces in Pasir Ris.

Even as the government pursues its growth-at-all-cost strategy, it must strike a good balance between nature and a concrete jungle.

And before embarking on such big developments, town planners must ensure that neighbourhood structures can cope with the environmental changes.

Otherwise residents will suffer, both in the short term and long run. Get the basics right.

  • PAU = CLN+FR:

Islandwide deliberate massive deforestation and deforestation-’by-mistake’(@Kranji) are the real causes of flooding all over this sinkapouring island.

If not seriously migitated, this might turn into catatastrophic urbanisation phenomena, occuring every 5 months, not 50 years! draining away Natural and Fiscal reserves.

    The Greed Equation holds true:
Profitising on Aggressive Urbanisation = Collossal Losses of Natural + Fiscal Reserves.

  • Ah Ha:

You may want to do a little research in the same dictionary as Cotton Sheep in regard to trees absorbing water. Trees slow the run off thus giving the ground longer time to absorb heavy rainfall as well as the root system holding the soil together. Absorbing, don’t know but ask the Cotton Sheep author…

  • Smart Nation:

Spot on! Deforestation is certainly a contributing factor to flooding. Irreversible damage done to the natural environment. “No-blame culture” but blame it on the weather, global warming, and rising sea level. In the musical-chair system, you won’t know which one to hold accountable. If they can’t fix the problem, they will tell you to live with it, and so like Covid-19, the flood too will become endemic.

years ago when he was just a junior, he was on flight with then zorro. one of us was one row behind these two pap fakes. boy. this ah neh was subservient to then zorro in both tone and mannerism. very sickening actually. is only this ah neh like this or is it true all ah nehs suck up and kick down?

is this why pap selected an INDIAN as a malay president? because pap balls need a lot of sucking up and pap Cbs need a lot of kicking down?

long message short. we are not impressed by this pap ah neh. we prefer Ms Hazel Poa Ms Sylvia Lim Dr Jamus Ms He Ting Ru Mr Leong Mun Wai or anyone from PSP WP.

My block also got flood. Cannot enter the car park. Can we claim from Town Council if car get stuck?

Tech: I live in an estate that’s prone to flooding. If it rains heavy for an hour or so, then expect the water to be at least 50cm or more. We are so used to sleeping in our cars during heavy rains, especially in Summer and Autumn. Get used to it. lol

Every country in the world affect by flood lah, not just Singapore. This is good reminder to protect our environment and save our world. Singapore government will come up carbon tax to cut down carbon emission and raise town council fee to discourage throw rubbish so that our flooding will not get out of control. We must use our own shopping bags and clear our own food trays in hawker centers so that the world we live will remain safe and Singapore flooding will stop.

aiyoh. other countries got their own people to kpkb and protest (sinkie land can protect or not ???) lar ??

save our world ? by open-leg policy ? or by having more buildings (trapping heat) to service open-leg policy, slaughtering huge area of greenery and forests (resulting in more carbon as green takes in carbon and gives out oxygen, more concrete roads and tunnel disrupting rain water flow ??) ???

white monkey policies result in problems and then want to pretend to solve problem by having carbon tax OR raising town council fee ???

higher population (from open-leg policy), of course more waste and vehicular traffic (producing carbon lar), also higher consumerism gdp also encourage needless wasteful spendings (you notice a lot of those R-SEE or PeeA events like to issue cheap wasteful goodies which do not last ??) ???
