Executions do not stop drug trafficking

From 1975 when the Misuse of Drugs Act was amended to replace the sentence of long term imprisonment, caning and hefty fines with DEATH, the Singapore government has failed to achieve its goal of zero drug case?

Doesn’t this 47 year period prove to the government that the death penalty has not worked as a deterrence? How many more years and how many more deaths by hanging does the government need to prove that they cannot achieve their target?

Can the government wise up? Stop all executions and abolish the death penalty. Executions do not stop drug trafficking.

Can you share your solutions to tackle the drug problem?

Or you think that since it’s not ever going to be zero then it should be allow to go wild?

Not sure what you’re fighting for.
    The life of traffickers?
Really can’t see the big picture in your big fight.

It seems better to fight for poverty.
At this moment, there’re probably thousands who are enjoying great life with the easy money.
Are they thinking about what happen if caught?

If it’s about life, there’re many lives that deserve to be saved.
A lot of them around & very much more deserving.

  • Trust only myself:

When did anyone promise about zero drug case…..?

Without death penalty the drug cases would be less or more, just need to ask this question.

An important motive, not publicly stated (for obvious reasons), was let out by LKY during a BBC Hard Talk session? When pressed on the issue, he said “they keep coming in and through. Without the death penalty, we will have to build and maintain many more prisons”. The usual profit and loss, pragmatic consideration. “What’s wrong with (saving) money?”

Firearms control does not eliminate crimes committed using firearms!

So the writer is proposing to do away with firearms control ?

“…Executions do not stop drug trafficking…”

This is the type of reasoning why there are so many mass shooting in US, becos certain segment will argue: Gun controls cannot stop people shooting others with guns.

I believe there are certainly many cases of good people buying and bear arms in USA has managed to be able to defend themselves from crimes or shootings.

And bearing arms, owning arms can also serve as deterrence against crimes in American societies, other than gives a sense of security to arms owners.

  • Let’s face it, execution does act as a deterrent against crime, criminals would think twice about committing an act that carries the death penalty.

But there will always be those who are too ignorant or simply too desperate to bother.

It is, IMHO, unfair to say that the death penalty “do not stop trafficking” and therefore it should be abolished because nothing will stop trafficking EVEN IF you hang the entire family with the trafficker as a punishment.

It does to a certain extent reduce the possibility of those who may be tempted to try.

As a comparison, I can also say that canning do not stop molestation and rape, so by the same logic, should we also abolish canning as well?

And while we are at it, can we also abolish the law altogether since imprisonment does not stop crime, since there will always be repeat offenders?

That having said, I think the death penalty should stay, but it has to be used sparingly, reserved for the most heinous of crimes. When to apply such a penalty should be left in the hands of the courts, not with AGC.

Well said.. let me put it the other way.

    This is opposition logic…

Eating does not stop hunger totally because one will get hungry again.

So let’s all stop eating all together…hahaha

Teo Soh Lung, please stop eating and ask your supporters to stop eating too.

How come everybody talk about the death sentence and whether the death sentence is effective or not ? How come nobody questioned out what eventually happened to those huge sum of drug money confiscated and what eventually happened to the huge amount of drugs and cigarettes confiscated all these years ? Where and whom they landed up with ? Everybody just assumed thst things follow SOP but SOP can be bended ,right ? Pui !
