Can universities teach students to be good?

I refer to the Opinion, ”Can universities teach students to be good?” (ST, June 28).

The fundamental basis of education is to educate each individual how to differentiate between right and wrong, moral values (such as honesty, respect, integrity and compassion) and life ethics besides imparting knowledge and skills.

University graduates will be potential leaders in many fields, and therefore they should carry greater social responsibilities and exemplify themselves by their daily words and behaviours.

For examples, law graduates are aspiring-to-be lawyers whose basic or main responsibilities are to uphold the law while representing and protecting their entrusted clients’ rights. In this respect, honesty and integrity are imperative to gain/win the trust and respect from an entrusted client and the society at large. The recent incident of judge delays bar admission for 6 law graduates found cheating in law examinations which greatly signifies the utmost importance of moral and life ethics.

Similarly, medical and healthcare profession’s practitioners should preferably carry equal, important social responsibilities and life ethics, as many patients are in their hands of care.

In addition, politicians should always bear in mind and place their electorate or people’s interest, safety and well-being first before self.

Last but not least, any educators in the education profession should carry themselves with high moral and life ethics so that they can win the respect and trust from their students. Further, schools’ teachers should always inculcate basic social etiquette, moral and life ethics to their students prior their graduation.

A recent court case which clearly exemplified how important for an educated person having equipped moral values: a male school teacher allegedly molested 13 boys over a span of three years between 2015 and 2018 in places including a school “in central Singapore” and a chalet was a despicable and unfortunate evidence.

You can teach knowledge but to build integrity and good character is not easy.

    Universities don’t teach this.

But students are responsible for their own grades and achieving the best they can.

This leads to a more self centered, me first mentality. Indirectly, the system grooms people who are selfish, unhelpful and competitive in a bad way.

They’ll only do things if they have someting to gain.

Kindness is a weakness. Humility is an admission of guilt – lose face. Honesty would depend if it worked in their interests.

Every action must be justified. Charity goes like this – we all worked hard and we expect others to have the same drive and determination. We won’t help the downtrodden or the unfortunate or needy- they must have done something to get themselves into this predicament.

They are your potential future leaders.

  • Harder Truths:

    Mr Teo – totally wrong

You are talking about universities indoctrinating students with what they think is ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ and their ‘moral values’. Universities nowadays are just stepping stones ot get that job with a high salary, and if you are lucky you can get into public service and make a killing. Moral values, right or wrong have never been important in $inkieland after 1965.

Morality comes from the individual and from watching how moral people in society work. This does not need a university.

However when you have a money grabbing government and the older generations telling young people that it is ok to be dishonest and that is the only way they can survive, then it does not matter whether anyone is in a university or not. The end product is still a another dishonest person leaning from their society of mainly dishonest people.

let us not forget a large proportion of the workforce is foreigners who have no morals and thrive on corruption. When this is the majority of people, who can any young person follow a good ‘moral’ path in life? There is no such thing in $inkieland these days.

Parents have a significant role that shapes and molds the young mind.

Ethics and morals is absent in Politics.
Politicians will say otherwise, but always watch what politicians do rather than what they say.

Response: Great and insightful comments. Educators from 1st Infant/Child Care Centre, Primary/Secondary/Pre-U schools and subsequently to University play only LIMITED PART in the SHAPING and MOLDING the MIND of an INDIVIDUAL from YOUNG to ADULTHOOD!

At the end of the day, you HAVE APPROPRIATELY STATED THE OBVIOUS: PARENTS HAVE A SIGNIFICANT ROLE THAT SHAPES AND MOLDS THE YOUNG MIND! THE SOLE RESPONSIBILITY OF ENSURING THIS IS BEING DONE REST WITH THE FAMILY, PERIOD!

Excellento! Another dumb article written by my fellow stupid Sinjapoorlang.

What are school (and education) meant for?

Go back just 100 years ago (probably just approx less than 60 years) , we will get an answer.

Schools were set up by who/what? What were their objectives?

When G get involved in educations, what are they (education) actualee meant for? When an authoritarian system took over education, what do you think they teaches?

And these days, how much $$$ the education industry is generating and contributing to GDP? How much more in return an economy is making from foreign students? How much more in labor supply these new foreign young ‘talents’ are also contributing to the base workforce?

Education is for differentiating Right/Wrong? Moral value? Haha… Teo Kueh Liang, i am actualee amazed by how many platforms willing to publish your JC GP articles. Lol, so sorry, i had embarrassed myself.

Elizabeth Holmes, founder and CEO of Theranos, had famously dropped out of Stanford to found the company using her tuition money, and was just 30 when Theranos was at its peak. Shouldn’t the responsibility of moral education be the responsibility of parents? How and why should this be passed on to the schools and universities? A child should be taught from a toddler what the word “NO,” means and to say “Sorry,” when he or she does something wrong. The other word that should be taught is to say, ” Thank You,” when something is given to the child or done on behalf of the child. Children learn by watching how the parents or caregivers behave. Values should be taught and ingrained in them as children. I would have failed as a parent if my child had to be disciplined in school or university.
