Poor diplomacy by Singapore

This is what I mean by poor diplomacy by Singapore which ought not to have allowed Rajapakse into Sg in the first place with absolute disregard to the sensitivities of local and international Tamils as well as the international community that includes the Sri Lankan community as a whole. With mounting bad publicity on hangings and Rajapakse’s addition to negative international glare, our leaders are failing this diplomacy fight and Singaporeans are losing out in the end.

“This is an opportunity for Singapore to use its own laws in pursuit of justice and protect the world from a man who has a hideous history of gross violations of human rights against all the different communities of Sri Lanka. Serial perpetrators must face trial, not be issued visas.”

In 2019, the ITJP with the international law firm Hausfeld LLP assisted 11 victims of torture to file a civil case against Rajapaksa in California.

The case was withdrawn when he was elected President in 2019 and acquired head of state immunity. That immunity no longer applies now he has resigned from office. This is believed to be the first criminal complaint against him.

Singaporean opposition politician Kenneth Jeyaretnam welcomed the call for Rajapaksa to be arrested, investigated and charged in Singapore.

“The international community must now exert maximum pressure to see that the Rajapaksas are brought to justice and that Singapore steps up to its international obligations,” Jeyaretnam said.”

  • Harder Truths:

My guess is $inkieland was ordered by the USA to take in this criminal, as he is a known lackey of western nations and $inkeland is a vassal state of the USA. he may have made large ‘donations’ here or have a lot of assets from his ill-gotten gains as well. But that is quite common for rich FT coming here to escape the law in their homeland and make substantial ‘gifts’ as a form of gratitude for services rendered.

When you lost in Sri Lanka, try to win in US or in Singapore. How can you win a Sri Lanka torture case in US, who openly practice torture globally? How can you hope to win the case in Singapore? Go buy Toto. Better chance.

Singapore should mind its own business. Otherwise there can also be arrest warrants for so-and-so from next door countries. And some will also issue arrest requests for ex-Spore top politicians.

Or arrest warrants can be issued against top US politicians for war crimes against some countries, etc. Where will it end?

A small country like Spore will do best to be free and open so long as the foreign visitor does not commit any crime in Singapore.

Singapore was a refuge for the ex-President of Zimbabwe who spent months here for medical treatment and spent lots of money here.

Recently the King of Eswatini came with a big delegation, stayed at a posh hotel for a week. That visit was hardly in the local press but the King led a trade delegation to Singapore. It shows that Spore knows how to handle sensitive visits.

China does it best…it minds its own business and expect others to do the same.

When Rajapaksa arrived in Spore, he was still the President of Sri Lanka, presumably has a diplomatic passport, was still head of a Commonwealth country of which Singapore is also a member. Why would Spore not let him in?

Singapore did Sri Lanka a big favor to help ensure that Rajapaksa can resign. His stay in Spore would be short anyway. Now that an ally of Rajapaksa is the President, he can return to Sri Lanka.

Spore should stay out of the politics of Sri Lanka. Instead, Spore should be giving help to Sri Lanka on trade and humanitarian purposes.

He does not have diplomatic immunity once he is out of office. Politicians who leave office become like any other citizen. If Sri Lanka has an extradition treaty with SG, he should be handed over to the Sri Lankan Embassy. It is for the Sri Lankan govt to decide what to do with him. That would be the neutral thing to do; to harbour him is to take his side. SG prides itself in the rule of law and must therefore live up to its reputation by honoring the extradition treaty.

Reported on Straits Times :Quote-”PUBLISHED 7 HOURS AGO
    FacebookWhatsApp
SINGAPORE – Sri Lanka’s former president Gotabaya Rajapaksa is set to extend his stay in Singapore.

The Straits Times understands that his short-term visit pass, which was issued when he arrived here on a private visit two weeks ago, has been extended by another 14 days.

This development comes as Sri Lanka’s Cabinet spokesman Bandula Gunawardena told reporters on Tuesday (July 26) that he was expected to return home.

He added that he was not aware of when the former president was returning but emphasised Mr Rajapaksa was not in hiding, neither was he in exile.

Another Sri Lankan government official who asked not to be identified said Mr Rajapaksa wanted to return home as soon as possible and was keen to live again at his private residence in the outskirts of Sri Lanka’s capital of Colombo, Bloomberg news agency reported.

On July 14, Mr Rajapaksa, 73, was issued a 14-day visit pass when he arrived at Changi Airport on a Saudia flight from the Maldives.

He had fled Sri Lanka amid a deepening economic crisis and widespread protests against his government as soaring inflation affected the prices of basic necessities such as food and fuel.

Shortly after he arrived in Singapore, Mr Rajapaksa tendered his resignation, which was officially announced by the Sri Lanka Parliament on July 15.

His ally and former prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was voted in by lawmakers as the new president last week.

ST understands that the new visa Mr Rajapaksa has been issued will expire on Aug 11….”Unquote.

Response :Gotabaya Rajapaksa fly to Singapore ,obvious parked his enormous wealth here already ! Where got want to go back to be arrested and send to jail ?Singapore welcome his evil rich backside massive wealth ,obvious extend his stay till cannot extend anymore .From there,he will travel to Malaysia back to Singapore to and fro buying properties in both countries and stay in this area forever till he died and still left a massive wealth !How could Singapore not welcome his wealth ?

It’s quite puzzling why commenters here readily judge this ex-president guilty of many hideous and corruption crimes. But, back in Sri Lanka, the new government has not said anything about his crimes. On the contrary, they are busy protecting him and welcoming his return.

Former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa was expected to return to the country from Singapore in the near future, Cabinet Spokesman Bandula Gunawardena said yesterday. Addressing the post-Cabinet Press Conference in Colombo, Gunawardena said that Gotabaya Rajapaksa had left for Singapore through formal channels and that it was not accurate to say he was hiding.

There is the United Nations to which SG is a member, to arbitrate international politics and international relations in peace time, in war time.

There has to be a political guide (my conjecture), on sovereignty issues, moral guide on how to behave.

Then there is the Hague, International Court whose advise, wisdom, certainly can be accessed.

How to stay neutral – this is ridiculous when SG has had time and again even unavoidably kay pohed on Johorerean affairs, for eg,

This is the PAP’s policy since LKY”S time. Ferdinand Marcos, was said to have large amounts of monies in the Singapore banks. When he had to flee the Philippines, LKY allowed him to come to Singapore. When President Suharto was dying in Indonesia, LKY went to visit him. It was rumoured that millions of Suharto’s or Indonesian taxpayers monies was parked in Singapore Banks. In recent years, we have seen 1MDB funds taken out of Malaysia through Singapore. The convicted criminal Najib Razak was visited by our foreign Minister in Malaysia. This caused Malaysian netizens said that we are morally bankrupt. Why are NR’s daughter and family allowed to live in Singapore? Under what type of visas? How about the children of the Myanmar junta? How many are here in Singapore while their father’s are killing Myanmar citizens? Why not send back all the family members of dictators and thieves back to their own respective countries to face their own citizens? The PAP’s rubber stamp approval for all foreign politicians who steal from their countries can be openly seen. Just as all Singaporeans are held accountable for taxes, any approval for long term visas should be on the basis of tax clearance from their respective countries. Otherwise we are stealing from the poor countries as a Nation! LHL should know that his durian sharing pal owes RM1.69B to the tax department in Malaysia. Why was he allowed into Singapore?

The U.S. govt did not steal Afghan money. On the contrary, the US had poured billions into the country in a failed attempt to rebuild it. This Afghan fund was previously deposited with NYFR Bank. It’s different from funds being looted out of the country by robber politicians for themselves and their families. It is made explicitly clear that “the Afghanistan central bank still owns them” and half the fund will be used for the Afghan people. The other frozen half will be used to compensate the families of 9/11 victims if the U.S. govt can get a legitimate Afghan representation to agree to it. That would have to come from the de facto Taliban Administration which the U.S. govt does not recognize as legitimate govt. The parties will have to work it out until an agreement is reached. Or would you prefer that the $7 billion be handed over to the Taliban?
