‘Unhappiest’ workforce rankings

A poll in 2014 by Randstad, an international recruitment and human resource provider, put Singapore at the top of the “unhappiest” workforce rankings.

That was not a one-off.

An international survey by recruitment agency Employment Hero in 2021 reveals that Singaporean workers are the most unhappy in the world.

Straits Times forum writer, Dr Quek Koh Choon, says that “this may not be the first time our nation is top or near-top on similar surveys. It seems that the trend has not changed much.”

He adds, “On the ground level, as a medical general practitioner, I am seeing an increase in anxiety disorders, depression disorders, relationship problems and breakdowns affecting students, families and even marriages.”

For unhappy employees, experts advise them to brush up on people management skills, emotional mastery, time management techniques, stress management, learn new skills, develop a growth mindset and focus on other aspects of life rather than career.

Employers can play a role too. Experts advise them to make work-life balance a priority, be transparent and honest, create a positive work environment as well as recognize and reward employees.

These experts’ advice, which may or may not work, thus rendering them a waste of time, nonetheless, do not address the root cause of the unhappiness.

The root cause is that Singapore has been hijacked by businesses so that all its resources, be it people, land or capital, are ultimately geared towards maximizing profits.

Thus we need an ever increasing population so that there will be a constant supply of workers and customers; Free Trade Agreements to lock in business practices for MNCs that enhance profits but oppress workers and customers; and better infrastructure so that businesses can run without a hitch.

As such, Singapore is always voted the top few most competitive economies in the world, which means MNCs can make good profits here because everything works and wages are low by the standards of developed economies.
In such an environment, the Singaporean worker is but a digit, a mere cog in the machinery. How can he be happy?

What’s worse, the country being overcrowded; being host to many rentiers sucking the blood of productive folks; and many government services and public goods being privatized and thus profit-driven, has meant that the cost of living has shot through the roof.

Thus the unhappy worker, despite hating his job, has no choice but to grind his teeth and soldier on, or else live like a vagabond and starve.

The government can convene a committee to look into how it can make the Singaporean worker happier, but it will be an exercise in futility unless it is prepared to make Singapore a home for him, and not just a business conglomerate, Singapore Inc.

Believe one of the biggest stress that native Singaporeans face is job security, career advancement, & no job.

This is largely due to PAP continue to welcome foreigners into the country.
At a rate that is almost open door.

Employers are able to tell Singaporeans to sick it up or leave. After all, these employers know that there are plentiful of cheaper foreigners available.
And there’re many cases of foreigners taking in own countrymen into the companies especially if the hiring power is in the foreigners in the companies.

PAP is also giving out citizenship like toilet paper.
With these new citizens come the squeeze on locals for public housing.
New citizens also seem to get away from national service. While our own spend 2 years in military camps, the foreign students start work or further their studies.
They knew that PAP is afraid of offending them because these foreigners & new citizens can simply pack up & go.

There’re buckets of problems & sufferings face by Singaporeans due to this PAP policy. The long term implications are very severe for natives & the nation.
Singaporeans better be worry. Very worry.

Is it the Cantonese Huay Kuan (广东会馆) bring in their own kind from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan ?

Is it the Ke Huay Kuan (客家会馆) bring in their own kind from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan ?

I heard from my Malaysian friends who own companies, their staffs are making way to Singapore, a lot gotten PRs or jobs here due to their friends already in SG.

Yes. Singapore workers are facing a lot of competition from third world workers who are already PRs or new citizens here and they invite their friends.

Competition is very unhealthy and SG govt is still importing them to make them the new core of loyal voters and GDP growth.

Singapore govt does not care about unhappy workers, all they care is more third world foreigners willing to come here to work and replace locals and convert to their loyal supporters.

Singaporeans hoping this PAPPY would change could forget it. Unless they are voted out, the conversion of foreigners into voters to win will continue.

    Stop dreaming PAPPY will change.

  • SGov is the Problem:

More mental cases in the future.
Theyll need to build new wings to IMH.
Gov already knows that…thats why recently theyve been coming up with several mental health programmes. Watch news on cna..
They are the ones who always cause the problem then spend $mils to try and whitewash it..
This problem will not go away till the gov make Our SG a less stressful place, beginning with school children’workload.
