I fell for a telephone scam

I want to share a painful personal experience that happened to me > a month ago and l want it to serve as a warning to fellow netizens.

I fell for a telephone scam and I have lost S$1,000/. I have made a police report at Cantonment Police Complex and OCBC has recently written to me, after their investigations, to formally close my case. I didn’t get my money back.

One morning when I was very busy outside, my phone rang and I answered the call. A person identified himself as David told me a few things. Btw, I have a friend by the name of David too. At that moment because I was very busy, I assumed that it was my friend David calling me.

One, he told me that he is using a new number to call me because he has lost his cellphone and he has got a new number. He asked me to save that number. Two, he told me that he is joining a friend to start a F&B business and invited me to their business opening ceremony and lastly, he asked me to help him with a couple of thousands dollars and said that he will return it back to me by 3.00pm that same afternoon.

I say no but I was prepared to help him with a thousand dollars. He told me that he will whatapps me the details to enable me to do the transfer.

Shortly after the phone call, the details came in and I promptly did the fund transfer as per my promise. After I have finished with what I was busy doing and when I checked, I realised then that I have been scammed.

I am not IT illiterate, I didn’t give away any OTP, I didn’t fall for any lovey lovey woman online, I didn’t fall for any get rich scheme or mortal greediness etc and still I was scammed! I immediately called OCBC to block my account and OCBC also advised me to make a police report.

From this experience, I have a few advices to share.

Even in the height of your whatever ‘busyness’, never, never make any decision and/or execute fund transfer. That was my fatal mistake.

Next, set a daily withdrawal limit on your banking account with whatever amount that you are comfortable with. In the unfortunate event of you being a scam victim, this decision will buy you time and limit your losses. This is a very, very useful and very, very important safeguard.

Think.

Mr. Simon Lim! You are one who has every answer and solution to anything that is reported in the Straits Times. But, it is unbelievable that you can fall for such a scam and later, give all kinds of reasons for your slip up.
I remember a rhythmic recitation that I had while in primary school. It goes like this: Simple Simon met a pieman going to the fair…..
In short, you are really a simple Simon!

If the victim asks the scammer why he doesn’t quite sound like David or whatever name the scammer uses he will be told that he’s having flu and that’s why his voice is affected!

Almost every day,we read about scams.New technologies are causing loss to many. If Simon had issued a cheque,he could have stopped payment on the cheque and saved his monies. What actually is the win in using digital platforms that lack safeguards to protect your monies from scams. Using bankcards for traveling and for various purposes will lead to further hacking. Can we be sure that our details with PAYPAL will not be sold or hacked? Any system put in place must ensure that there is recourse for mistakes. As the govt. pushes us to use these platforms, are there enough safeguards in place? The many scams and hacks say otherwise so be prepared to lose more monies.

  • We understand cos we know:

    We can understand.

A few years ago, we were at the KLIA airport. We had just returned the rental car and were heading toward the SQ checkin counter.

On the way there, a Chinese couple approached us for help, saying they have lost their wallet and needed some money to top up their tickets back to Beijing. They gave us their business card, with an address in Wangfujing in Beijing and a listed contact number.

We traveled and sometimes we do faced difficulties. So we thought it was a genuine case. We told them we no longer have any local currency but if they wanted we had S$. They didn’t ask for much. Just S$200. We passed them the money.

When we were at the airline lounge, we called a friend in Beijing to check up on the number listed on the business card. It was a fake.

    hahaha.

From that day, we no longer cared for any soul whether genuine or not.

So down the line one day we landed in Suvarnabhumi airport. On the way to the immigration counter, a middle aged man stopped us saying he had lost his wallet. We did not stop walking but just told the man to go to the airport police for help.

    Once bitten twice shy.

So we stopped helping. We also stopped helping anyone friend relative whatever who voted pap.

  • We understand cos we know:

We also faced a scam right here in TRE.

Some time back, someone (we really forgot who it was) said Mr Lim Tean was going to take up an issue and asked for donation.

Mr Lim Tean’s bank account was provided. We sent S$100.

After that, nothing happened. We even forgot what the S$100 we sent was for. In those days, as long as it is against pap, we were ok to send money. (Not to brag but we handed cash to folks who protested in HLP, folks such as Mr Roy Ngerng Ms HHH. They know who we are. Because we always hand out cash placed inside Singtel enevelopes.)

Tech: Anything to do with the JR? Reason I asked is because we have never officially crowdfunded for Mr Lim. You may email me direct, if you want to clear this up.

This is what PRC is all about honestly, Chinese people full of ideas of how to cheat and scam. The calling up and asking u..if u remember me, started by PRC.. now Malaysians are using it.

I was in Guangzhou Airport, PRC guy also said he lost his luggage etc and asked for $200… I ignored him…. Few months later, I was in Guangzhou Airport, the same old guy approached me again. I told him you are going to tell me you lost your luggage and passport etc…. He said, “How do you know?” I said you dont remember me?

    LOL

I believe you are talking about taking the Singapore govt to court over VAX or ANTIVAX. They lost and asked to pay court fees more than $20000+.

Tech: Then there might be a problem, because TRE only use our official PayPal account and Ms Han’s POSB account to solicit donations for the damages awarded, Mr Lim’s account or anyone else was NOT used for that purpose. The donor/s might want to contact us to provide further information so we can look into the matter, if they have made payment to anyone else other than the 2 official avenues listed on TRE.

This happened to me just a few days ago:

Just received a mysterious call from an unfamiliar number who spoke in Mandarin saying “Just to inform you this is my new number. Don’t use my old number to call me.”
    I asked “You are?”
“What? So fast you forget who I am? We just spoke to each other the other day”
“Sorry, I really can’t recognize your voice”
“Why don’t you make a guess as to I am?”
    “I really can’t recognize”.
    “Fat fat, Wear glasses, remember?”
    “Derick is it?”
    “Correct!” (straightaway I know it’s a scam)
“But Derrick and I use to converse only in English!”
The other party went silent. After that, I hung up and he didn’t call again.

I have heard about phone scams calling you claiming to be your friend and asking you to guess who they are, and when you mentioned a name, they will say “Correct!”. They will slowly chit chat with you until they think that you are comfortable with them and they will start inquiring about things more personnel, and finally your bank details. So please remember to stay vigilant.
