SPH Media has been lying about its circulation numbers

SPH Media, your “trusted source of news”, to which up to $900m of your tax dollars has been pledged, today announced that it has been lying about its circulation numbers.
Why might employees feel the need to lie? There could be many underlying institutional pressures, including the desire to charge higher advertising rates. Or perhaps bluff the investment community and the public (including poor you) about the health of the business.
How did they lie? Double counting of subscriptions. Printing extra copies which were counted and then promptly destroyed (oh, the poor paper lost).
“Certain circulation numbers were arbitrarily derived,” was perhaps my favourite method, which I take to mean “anyhow whack”.
But the best line from the article is this one:
“SPH Media cited several examples of these inconsistencies, in reply to queries from The Straits Times.”
Said without irony, I imagine, ownself check ownself is now on a different planetary scale.
P.S. congrats to Wake Up Singapore for breaking this story yesterday, which is almost certainly what led SPH Media to come clean [LINK], over two weeks after it fired employees involved. Much more investigation needed.

How embarrassing for PAP yet again ha ha ha. Will they ever dare tell us all again that SPH is a, ahem, “trustworthy” news source when all this has blown over hee hee hee!
I doubt that numbers were merely inflated by 10% to 15% as reported. Seeing as how their circualtion has fallen by quite a bit quarter after quarter it feels more like 30% to 40% inflated instead. Still want to brag and boast about online subscription numbers har? Probably also inflated numbers lah!
As usual, just a few small news reports will be written about this saga, we sure as heck won’t be getting non stop reports about this very embarrassing saga for sure. And PAP will also be citing some other examples of other newspapers engaging in the same tactic to try their darndest that this isn’t unique to Singapore.
But so what, it’s always nice to read of PAP being malu’ed isn’t it? HA HA HA!
