I refer to the Editorial of the Straits Times, “Between China and the US: New dynamics, new paths, same balance” (May 1).
Since centuries ago, there were imminent, significant differences in the direction, conception or philosophy of the country’s administration and governance between the United States and China.
These scenarios will remain for the present and the future.
Since China’s emergence, China has been consistently focusing upon its country’s internal administration and governance.
These, obviously include China’s economic developments, the well-being of its people, the political and social stability, the modernisation of its agriculture, industry, national defence, and science and technology.
In reverse, the United States of America has been actively pursuing to be the greatest/top hegemony immediately after the World War II.
It had started intervened the internal affairs and undermined unity and sovereignty of other countries.
For examples, USA initiated or waged war in 1)Korean Peninsula War from 1950 to 1953,
2)The Vietnam War from 1955 to 1975
(More than 3 million people (including over 58,000 Americans) were killed in the Vietnam War, and more than half of the dead were Vietnamese civilians),
3) The War in Afghanistan was an armed conflict from 2001 to 2021.
It began when an international military coalition led by the United States launched an invasion of Afghanistan, toppling the Taliban-ruled Islamic Emirate and establishing the internationally recognized Islamic Republic three years later.
4)Iraq War from 20 March 2003 to 18 December 2011.
US waged invasion and occupation of Iraq. Overthrow of Ba’ath Party government and execution of Saddam Hussein in 2006.
All the above wars have clearly expounded the ambitions of USA’s invasion and hegemony.
The hidden ultimate motives of US are aiming for selling its weapons and military equipment, reverse flow of funds/capital and seizure of fuel from its invasions.
The recent years, US has taken China as its strongest competitor and virtual rival.
This type of jealousy and “psychological imbalance” have clearly reflected in respective spectrum.
For examples, the US administration often stirs up Taiwan Straits crisis or tensions, by hoping to sell its armaments and military equipment to Taiwan, deploys its military forces in Taiwan and launch warships, aircraft carriers and military aircrafts touring Taiwan Straits as well as intentionally fix up U.S. politicians visit Taiwan to stoke up the indignation of Chinese leadership.
Another distinctive confrontation adopted by the US government against China is launching tariff barriers and cracking down China’s technology firms in The United States.
Anyway, whatever measures and actions taken by the USA to curb/suppress China’s swift emergence will hardly be successful.
As China’s economic success or prosperity is solidly built upon self-reliance, unremitting efforts/strengths to secure consistent improvement and stability.
In short, the recent history of China’s prosperity and successful governance have been built upon its capability of applying the traditional Chinese philosophy – the harmony and coordination of Yin and Yang.
Needless to say, Singapore, Asean and Europe have the desire for balance between the rival superpowers.
Therefore, achieving the meaningful balance of superpowers can only bring the hope of peace to this turbulent world.

Instead of listening to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s warnings about “red lines,” the US has repeatedly crossed them, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said in an interview published on Wednesday. The Democrat running for US president added that Washington should have either invited Moscow to NATO or dismantled the anti-Russian alliance after the Cold War.
“We should have listened to Putin over many years. We made a commitment to Russia, to Gorbachev, that we would not move NATO one inch to the east. Then we went in, and we lied,” Kennedy told the outlet UnHerd.
Instead of offering to integrate Russia into the West, as many diplomats urged in 1991, the US expanded NATO to its borders. “What is the purpose of NATO other than to oppose Russia? If you’re addressing Russia in a hostile way from the beginning, of course their reaction is going to be hostile back,” Kennedy said.
He described what happened in Kiev in 2014 as “essentially a coup d’etat” supported by the US, recalling the infamous phone call in which Victoria Nuland was “handpicking a new cabinet” hostile to Moscow.
“If Mexico did that and then started killing – they killed 14,000 Russians in Donbass, the Ukrainian government – if Mexico did that to expatriate Americans, we’d invade in a second,” Kennedy said, adding that Putin “repeatedly told us: these are red lines, you’re crossing.”
“Let’s be honest: It’s a US war against Russia, to essentially sacrifice the flower of Ukrainian youth in an abattoir of death and destruction for the geopolitical ambition of the neocons” to see regime change in Moscow, Kennedy said. He added that the people who created the problem weren’t capable of settling it.

China is banning government critics from leaving the country and weaponising new laws to intimidate journalists, according to a report.
Tens of thousands of people are under exit bans at any one time in China, according to the latest report from human rights group Safeguard Defenders which cites a 2022 investigation that found 128 cases of foreigners being kept from exiting the country between 1995 and 2019.
“Since Xi Jinping took power in 2012, China has expanded the legal landscape for exit bans and increasingly used them, sometimes outside legal justification,” the report says.
It highlights no less than five new or amended laws introduced since 2018 that provide for the use of exit bans.
The legislation appears to frequently be used to target human rights activists.
The strengthening of counter-espionage laws that could stop anyone under investigation, whether Chinese or foreign, from leaving the country, has triggered alarm among the international business community.
The uncertainty is huge,” Jorg Wuttke, head of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China, told Reuters.
“At a time when China is proactively trying to restore business confidence to attract foreign investment, the exit bans send a very mixed signal,” the Chamber said in a statement.
In 2021, activist Guo Feixiong was prevented from leaving China to visit his wife Zhang Qing who was being treated in the US for terminal cancer. He was banned from leaving on ill-defined national security grounds and then disappeared.
“Never could I imagine the Chinese authorities were capable of such inhumane cruelty – to keep him locked up when my life is coming to an end,” wrote Ms Zhang from her hospital bed.
She died in January 2022. Two days later, Mr Guo was formally arrested.
“A key concern for exit bans is that more and more entities can now issue exit bans on people, and issue them without giving clear justification,” said Peter Dahlin, the director of Safeguard Defenders.
“One can be prevented from leaving China simply because an organ, somewhere, feels they might be a threat to national security,” he added.

OTTAWA (Reuters) -Canada’s spy agency withheld information about Chinese threats against a Canadian lawmaker and his family in 2021, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Wednesday, adding that he had told the agency that in the future such threats must be revealed immediately.
The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) had determined that information about the threats against Michael Chong, a member of parliament with Canada’s main opposition Conservative party, were not concerning enough to inform him, Trudeau told reporters in Ottawa.
Chong has said he found out about the threat to his family in Hong Kong from a newspaper and slammed the Trudeau government for inaction after the Globe and Mail newspaper reported on the threats on Monday, citing a CSIS report.
The Globe reported that Beijing had sought information about Chong’s relatives who may be in China in a likely effort to “make an example of this MP and deter others from taking anti-PRC positions.”
Canadian media outlets have published several reports, citing anonymous intelligence sources, alleging schemes run by the Chinese government to interfere in Canada’s last two elections. Beijing has denied those allegations, saying it has no interest in interfering in Canada’s internal affairs.
Trudeau has previously said China attempted to meddle in the 2019 and 2021 votes, but did not change the outcome. He has appointed an independent special investigator to probe the allegations.
On Wednesday, Trudeau said he learned about the threats against Chong from the Globe report and upon enquiring about it, found out that CSIS had decided to withhold information.
“Going forward, we’re making it very, very clear to CSIS and all our intelligence officials that when there are concerns that talk specifically about any MP, particularly about their family, those need to be elevated,” Trudeau said.
Chong, speaking in Ottawa after Trudeau, said if federal ministers were unaware about the CSIS assessment, it “calls into question the PMO’s handle on the machinery of government.”
“The government needs to come clean about who knew what and when and what they did about it,” he said.
Chong was sanctioned by Beijing in 2021 after his motion passed the Canadian parliament declaring China’s treatment of the Uyghur Muslim minority genocide.

IF China is really as bad as the report claims, then this “human rights group Safeguard Defenders” would have been kicked out of China like many slanted so-called journalists who constantly slant their reports. There is no way that China would allow this human rights group Safeguard Defenders to remain in China to “investigate”, so how did this group manage to come up with this “2022 investigation that found 128 cases of foreigners being kept from exiting the country between 1995 and 2019.” bull of a shit claims?
Did they contact ALL the foreigners that were confined or ALL these foreigners contacted them? Was these foreigners supposedly prevented from leaving during the C19 pandemic?
Common sense dictates that it would have been better to just kick them out of the country instead of forcing them to remain, right? Unless of course there are investigations pending against them. I am sure most countries practice the same, no?
Or is this another case of we think so, it must be so?
Anyway, without confirming or denying the report, I do believe that some are banned from leaving the country due to pending cases, these I believe are perfectly due to legal grounds, like how the Parti maid was prevented from leaving Sinkieland during her trial. Singapore’s government expelled a prominent Chinese-born American academic from the country.
It’s an unusual move for the city-state, which reportedly may not have taken the step for decades.
Huang Jing, who had been granted permanent residency in Singapore, was high profile: He was the director of the Centre on Asia and Globalisation, a professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy and an independent director on the board of property player Keppel Land.
But on Friday, Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs said in a press release that Huang was an “undesirable immigrant,” for engaging in “activities inimical to Singapore’s national interests.”
The MHA alleged that Huang had knowingly interacted with intelligence organizations and agents of a foreign country and worked with them to influence Singapore’s government policy and public opinion in the city-state by offering “prominent and influential Singaporeans” what he described as “privileged information.”
The press release said Singapore’s government declined to act on that information, without providing details of the information or what country Huang was alleged to have cooperated with.
The MHA said Huang’s wife, Shirley Yang Xiuping, would also be expelled for being aware of her husband’s alleged actions. After leaving the country, both will be permanently barred from re-entry, the MHA said.
Huang denied the allegations in comments to the South China Morning Post over the weekend. Reuters reported on Tuesday that Huang and his wife, who were still in Singapore, have appealed the decision.
“It’s nonsense to identify me as ‘an agent of influence’for a foreign country,” he said, according to SCMP. “And why didn’t they identify which foreign country they’re referring to? Is it the U.S. or China?”
“How can they treat me like this? If they have evidence, they should take me to court,” he added, according to the SCMP report.
