Race relations in Singapore

I refer to the Today’s “Commentary: In 1954, David Marshall spoke about race relations in Singapore. Have we made real progress since then?” (Dec 15).

For any country to be prosperous and powerful, it must first achieve political and social stability, and its people must live in harmony and be united. Only in this way can we achieve lasting and good economic development. As a small country, Singapore is no exception.

Unfortunately, Singapore has gone through a turbulent period of political instability, social incoherence and unrest, mass unemployment, housing shortages and lack of land and natural resources prior to its independence.

For examples, of the political crisis: the Indonesia–Malaysia confrontation in January 1963 which affected the uncertainty of the livelihood of many Singaporeans at then.

Furthermore, many workers participated in strikes instigated by the communist-influenced trade unions, as illustrated by the Hock Lee Bus riots in 1955.

Apart from labour and student riots, communal tensions and inter-ethnic conflict were other causes of violent unrests in the 1950s and 1960s. The Maria Hertogh riots in 1950 and the communal clashes that broke out during Prophet Muhammad's birthday celebrations in 1964 are stark reflection of these unpleasant memories.

After Singapore’s independence, the ruling PAP government has actively advocated and implemented its multiracialism policy.

This multiracialism policy aims to manage Singapore’s ethnic diversity, maintaining racial equality and harmony as well as stabilising intra-societal relations.

So far, Singapore has achieved impressive progress on its political, social and economic front after its independence.

Anyway, Singapore must continue to enforce, adhere to and consolidate the following measures to ensure diversity of our multiracialism overtones.

1) Deepening and strengthening mutual exchanges, understanding and close contact among all ethnic groups. For example, organising more interfaith dialogues, talks and tours.

2) Continue to inculcate the national spirit and close relations of multiracial unity, friendship and mutual multiethnic cooperation.

3) Organize more large-scale comprehensive academic and cultural talks, art, musical, drama and theatre performances to promote active inter ethnic communications and entrenching mutual interactions and understanding. For examples, Chingay procession, National Day Parade and cultural performances and Racial Harmony Day.

4) Put an end to racist, extremist and racially discriminatory remarks and thoughts online and offline (any social networking platforms).

5) Strictly prohibit the penetration, participation and interference by any foreign forces on our political system and religious affairs.

One thing that I have come to realise these days is that the dark and dangerous days of our country’s history are in the past. I have been told numerous times over the years about the bus riots and how people dared not leave their homes in fear of being killed. The generations that were born after these disturbances have never experienced first hand the level of danger that the older generations did.

It’s like Gaza right now. The poor people don’t really have any safe place to run to and they do not know if they will be alive tomorrow. It’s good that the government prioritises peace among the races and religions and takes swift action when people try and stir up trouble. Good to nip the problem in the bud instead of letting it grow bit by bit when one has a bo chup attitude and people get bolder bit by bit.

I’m sure you all remember the recent Denmark Quran burning issue don’t you? Common sense sure is in short supply these days.

Whenever we talk about race, it just reminded me only PAP benefitted from it!

Starting with the GRCs. This GRC policy was to ensure the minority races were represented in Parliament. But it ended up with only the useless Chinese MPs were elected into the parliament through GRCs. Ironically, a single Indian was elected into parliament all by himself, alone, without the help of the Chinese members.

Next is the reserved President for Malay. Why the need to reserve for a Malay, but an Indian was selected to be President eventually. What the PAP was implying was that no Malay was qualified. Why not just reserve for a minority race, when it was so desperate just to prevent someone from contesting!

The only people who are racist are the PAP’s. Racism benefitted the PAP. To prove that they are not – first races should be removed from Singaporeans’ IC. Next, is the contributions from different races self help groups. Why differentiate CDAC, SINDA, MBMF, ECF these are racist action! Why not just put them into one fund.

Only PAP talks about races, not Singaporeans in general!

Minority Singaporeans have always been marginalised in jobs, housing, promotions and opportunities. Nothing new. Civil service has always been Chinese privileged. Our PM is always Chinese. It’s always been made out to be a Chinese nation. The minorities are invisible. Many foreigners think we are just a Chinese country even though we are a multi-ethnic nation and not a monoethnic country. PAPigs are clueless about democracy. Sinkies themselves complain and elect the very people they keep complaining about. Sinkies are not bright in this regard.

  • Dalai Says:

“If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair.”

The deep underlying truth of race relations — is that ‘we’ have yet to lay our racial ghosts to rest (same applies to native Singaporeans but that’s another story). I would prefer to live in a system where every individual – regardless of traits – is judged based on competence and not based on irrelevant inherent characteristics like race, gender, or color. I would suppose that we would all favor measures to shape such a society for our descendants, if not for ourselves.

On the other hand, this nation has long operated on the assumption that racial differences are real. To eliminate such considerations is certainly impossible. Humans have a marked tendency to ‘stick to your own kind,’ which is not so easily changed. Inequalities and injustices must be worked out. But race does matter, except as a signal for the utter unfairness of the distribution of our social resources. If nothing else, I will always resent our past leaders for having exploited racial tension and consequently incubated into our political ethos; likely for the rest of our lives. What can won’t baby-boomers kick down the road?

In a meritocracy oriented society, people understand not making the grade, or not having some other controllable factor; to be told that it wasn’t your effort that was at fault or the fact that you have a less than desirable melanin content fly’s in the face BUT junk preferences for *outside groups* (FTs). The resentment is instant and palpable.
