Poh Soo Kai: I, for One, have Chosen to Support the SDP

Dr Poh Soo Kai, one of the few surviving leaders from the Barisan Sosialis (BS), called on Singaporeans to support the SDP. He was speaking at a lunch hosted by the SDP yesterday to honour the ‘Old Left’ who fought for Singapore’s independence during the colonial days.

Dr Poh said: “The PAP has been in power by suppressing the opposition for over 60 years. The old generation cannot just keep quiet. We have to do what we can. I, for one, have chosen to support the Singapore Democratic Party.”

“I hope many of you will do the same,” he continued, “because we can truly build up the base to extend the reach of the party. The future is not bright for the PAP.”

He pointed out that the world economy has caused asset inflation and this has markedly polarised society. Rich people have made their money, he said, but those who have no assets will find it difficult as most of them are in debt.

“The people who are going to suffer are your children and grandchildren,” Dr Poh warned.

In welcoming the guests, SDP Chairman Paul Tambyah thanked our guests for their contribution to Singapore’s development and remembered leaders like Mr Lim Chin Siong, Mr Said Zahari, and Dr Lim Hock Siew, all of whom who have passed away.

Speaking in Mandarin and English, Professor Tambyah added, “Today, we face an uncertain future for our country. The PAP leadership appears to have lost their way, they seem confused about whether we own the land our HDB flats sit on or whether we don’t.”

Referring to PM Lee Hsien Loong’s National Day Rally, he told the audience that while the ministers expect to be paid astronomical salaries, they ask us to tighten our belts.

“They divide us by culture and social status and now even by generation,” the SDP chairman pointed out, “we had the pioneer generation, we will get the Merdeka generation and – hopefully my cohort will not be the mediocre generation! We in the SDP believe that Singaporeans deserve better.”

SDP Treasurer Bryan Lim also addressed the attendees. He thanked the pioneers for their sacrifice and said that their contribution inspires the SDP to continue the fight against oppressive authoritarians.

He reminded those present: “We will not retreat and will not show fear because we know the fruit of a righteous victory will always taste the sweetest.”

Other Barisan leaders also stood up to speak. Mr Tan Kok Fang said that the SDP’s persistence in the face of PAP persecution is very important. “From this, you can see that the SDP’s future is bright.” He called on his compatriots to support the party to help realise their ideals.

Mr Ang Eng Siong, who was former PM Goh Chok Tong’s classmate and also an ex-ISD detainee, rallied the Old Left not to passively observe the fight for democracy. “It is everybody’s responsibility, not just the SDP’s, to get them into Parliament,” Mr Ang said.

Master-of-ceremonies Mr Khung Wai Yeen, who was the SDP’s candidate for Bukit Panjang and recently co-opted in the party’s Central Executive Committee, commented in Mandarin that the government is blind and deaf to the people’s difficulties.

Mr Khung said that the PAP is still stuck with outdated policies that it implemented decades ago and has no new ideas to take Singapore forward. He said, “The SDP will strive harder for electoral victory in order to improve the people’s lives!”

  • Crazy Rich PAPpy:

I’ve attended many SDP election rallies, shook hands with a few SDP members but never get a chance to vote for them because SDP never contested in the constituency I live in. Can’t wait for SDP to join force with an opposition coalition party so that my vote can effect a change and send more opposition members into Parliament like Mr Ang has said.

Where there’s a will there’s a way. Unity is strength. Together we’ll kick the white butts out of Parliament and replace them with patriotic singaporeans who are truly genuine to serve the citizens.

It is time. Dr Poh Soo Kai, from the Fajar Generation spoke out and appealed to the Pioneer and Merdeka Generations to support the SDP. For over 60 years, the PAP used its unbridled power to suppress the Opposition, to divide and rule and to enrich themselves. It is heartening that surviving members of the Barisan Sosialis (a party that was formed after the PAP split into 2 major factions) are active again in local politics. They can help to bring a new dawn to Singapore as the PAP recedes into the sunset.

don’t do more of the same GE2011 or GE2015. because the outcome shall be more or less the same as GE2011 or GE2015.

do something different. do Pakatan Singapura. Dr Mahatir PH has shown the way. it can be done.

don’t fight GE2019 just to enter parleement.

rather fight GE2019 to topple clown pap and S$m gang. so that New Government can indict clown pap and S$m gang for abuse of power for S$m, for lying.

the list of clown pap sins is very long. INDIAN is malay, now also milo. HDB is asset whose value never goes down. etc. etc. etc.

All my family have migrated. I am the only sixth-generation $G local left from my family who cannot migrate thanks to the old despot and the 70% who support his dynasty.

I don’t really care what happens anymore even though I know what will happen. History has shown time and again foolish people end up on the streets and the so-called country taken over by gangsters when they ignore the people that matter.

I will most likely not be around when this happens but it will be a blessing to leave this shithole one way or the other.

I think not just SDP but a strong oppo alliance.
No point for oppo parties to waste time n limited resources fighting as individual parties; IT WONT WORK even if Poh SK raise two hands up for SDP.
I,too, will support SDP but if you put a gun on my head,i still say POINTLESS?

THE ONLY WAY TO CHANGE IS AN OPPO ALLIANCE,anything less will just bring about more disappointment for both oppo candidates n their supporters like Poh SK or an old sg uncle like me.

Anyway, SDP stand for Say Dada Party… so, everybody, Say Goodbye to Chee now.

Actually, Singaporeans have to stop doing what they’ve been doing for the last 20 years, giving PAP majority votes even when they took the country on a downhill slide. It is Singaporeans who are expecting a different outcome while giving the same party their vote, and it has to stop. Don’t expect a different outcome by doing the same thing over and over again. We are experiencing a decline in living standards even as our Ministers are drawing out of this world salaries. We are told to tighten our belts, eat $3 hawker meals, don’t use 4G etc even as the government boasts of our first world status.

It’s a shame Singaporeans keep griping, but keep putting the same party in Parliament.

Among all the opposition in Singapore, SDP has better ideas and directions for Singapore. They should form a shadow cabinet and be ready to take over the government if they win the next election.

PAP should know that it’s fate is Losing the Power eventually.
That’s PAP’s fate dictated by the law of the universe.
What goes up must cum down.

There is only one way for PAP to go and it’s down.
The glory days are long over.

Unfortunately , the day PAP fall is unlikely in any of our life times.

Singaporeans are unchangeable because their base is the old man cohort.
Old people nearly impossible to change.
