Medically-unfit serviceman deserve our full respect

This story happened 2 years ago and it shows that given the right support, medically unfit serviceman can contribute their fair share to the nation. Not every man is meant to be a soldier, especially since the rigours of soldiering are not everyone’s cup of tea. A friend of mine found it tough to adjust to the pace of his unit, and requested for a change in vocation. Unfortunately, his OC did not agree with him as he did not have any medical evidence of his issues. As he had issues adjusting to the different culture of army life, he attended several medical appointments, which further incensed his superiors, who thought he should have used his weekends to see doctors. In his defence, his precious weekends were spent on his research and coding, which he had a burning passion for, and he thought it will be more professional to spend the weekday to seek medical help instead of affecting his work.

I dont know the details but he was exempted from the army as he was medically unfit for service. Unfortunately, his unit was not kind to him and made sarcastic remarks about how he is a “second class citizen” for being a “chao keng”, which implied he was malingering. It is worrying that some will think so low of our servicemen who merely wished to balance their career aspirations with their duty to the country. Some may be able to adjust to a strict discipline expected of a rifleman, but others may find more fulfillment in their own devices, with their own work. We should not judge others solely based on their medical condition in army.

My friend has since moved on from this episode and has recently secured an investment banking position due to his skills in coding at a prestigious bank. Even though he has tremendous workload, the culture fit him and he feels respected in his job, despite being slighted over in the past. He now contributes to the nation by paying his taxes and contributes to our robust economy and does it proudly. Not everyone is meant to born the flag, and some Singaporean Sons may play a different role in the economy, instead of the army. This shows that the army should be more flexible and forgiving of medically unfit servicemen as given a chance, they can succeed too.

Forging Ahead

  • Singapore needs a reboot:

NS is a system started in 1960′s. How long ago is that? 6 decades ago.

And the gov is still relying on an old system.

Time to progress to a professional army to really defend Singapore.

Scrap NS. It is now more of a political tool to brainwash and scare the population.

  • Harder Truths:

    Let me say this once.

National Service does not matter. Whether you are ‘fit’ or ‘unfit’ does not matter. The pappy system looks down on anyone it deems unfit and therefore unworthy.

This system was started by the old man – who discriminated against anyone he deemed unworthy.

Everyone is worthy. Everyone has rights. Everyone is a valuable citizen regardless of what the pappies think of us.

So stop all this bullshit about trying to ‘fit in’ as defined a bunch of evildoers who pass judgement on you because they are despots.

  • NotMyProblem:

Those who had served NS during the first few batches accepted NS and served with pride. That was the time Singaporeans knew it was necessary and worth the while to do it.

But now, what the point of doing it? Jobs taken from Singaporeans and given to foreigners. Are we supposed to protect foreigners so that they can bully us?

NSmen are now being disadvantaged, delayed in employment, delayed in university, employers preferred people without reservist obligation. Lose two years in experience, etc.

When a young sg is FOUND TO BE *UNFIT* in studies,he gets streamed into *drop-out* classes in school and become ostracised.
In the army, a serviceman found to medically unfit for training is also being ostracised.

I wonder if Stephen Hawkings was simply ostracised, would the world has been able to benefit from his genius?

Medically unfit servicemen with *HEALTHY* brains but who are not govt-$cholars shud be assigned DECENT N SUITABLE POSTS so that they coild contribute meaningfully to society instead of wasting 2.5 years in the SAF getting SLIGHTED?

    SG GOT NO ENOUGH TALENT?
Or Sh gahmen got NO BRAINS???

Make NS compulsory for all male FT before they can seek employment in Sinkapoor.
Per PAP’s logic, if one benefits from their policies, one must serve NS.
FT definitely benefits a lot. Better pay, better life using fake degrees.
Level the playing field for all.

  • What;s The Point Of NS ?:

I was very proud of doing NS being the second batch called up in early 1968.

But now no more proud. Where in the world can you find a government giving jobs to foreigners instead of to their own citizens ?

Don’t be dumb. Take action and vote the farking PAP out.

Amry culture – obey without question, verbal abuse, shout holler at you. Who in the right mind would think it the right fit?

As the army is imposed on males, it is overbearing, has no respect for people, higher ranks demand respect regardless.

These people are a poor fit for corporate life. Go shout holler at your female colleagues and see if they don’t quit.

During the 1990s, I went for interview at the museaum. One qestion they asked was:”how are you going to fit in?” Then instead of offering a full time job, they asked me to volunteer.

I thought the museum is not a place of creativity, innovation or even a friendly workplace. Volunteer? No, I don’t work for free.

  • Difference of position:

Well , its a matter of difference of position.

From the officer position, if all the men act like your friend, how to command and conduct an exercise properly let alone to fight a battle.

From your friend position, he merely want to protect himself or he s not interested or keng for his benefits or objectives. Is he wrong ? As long as no harm is done. Remember the civil defence case where the guy kena push into the well and gone case. If man enough to f off his superior, today he will be still alive. Names calling, no big deal.
If China’s 300 can kneel down , cry, beg and sing national anthem song infront of China embassy in Malaysia on MBI fiasco ( video shot and gone viral ) . Whats the big deal about keng ?

In the mid 90s i went to one interview in civil service.. the interview ask me how can u contribute to the organisation.. i said that depends on what is available in the organisation. they were not happy with my answer. The braindead civil servants immediately asked a person who 1) have not even started working in the organisation yet 2) ask others/ strangers to contribute instead of reflecting on themselves on how to contribute.

  • has a positive cause:

//Unfortunately, his unit was not kind to him and made sarcastic remarks about how he is a “second class citizen” for being a “chao keng”, which implied he was malingering.//

as certain families are too ‘cultured’ never to use ‘dirty’ or negative words, for those NS boys or men who cannot take this kind of sarcastic and sometimes degrading remarks (in the old days all the @#$%^&& words coming out from the dirty mouths of ‘superiors’), these men may carry with them the psychological burden (bruised self esteem) into their adult lives ? superiors are always right and those below have to always take instructions right ?

by right, serving the army has a positive cause, but with the white idiotic 6.9m or 10m open-leg hotel policy and giving PR or citizenship (imagine about 20k per year ?) like toilet paper, it has lost its purpose for MANY except for the white idiots who still need it for their own marketing purpose to constantly brainwash the daft sinkies ??

More horror stories. After getting a job, The very rfirst morning I reported for work at a small PR firm, I was whisked to a client meeting. I kept quiet during the meeting as I was not briefed on what to discuss.

Later that b*t*h in the PR firm remaruked to my boss that I kept quiet. Stupid cow. Why should I presume to know and then say something they don’t like to hear.
