Is the new Parliamentary facial recognition a waste of taxpayers’ money when PAP MPs lack discipline?

It was recently reported that the Parliament Secretariat will introduce a facial recognition system to replace the current manual approach. As a Singaporean taxpayer, I ask myself what is the point of this? Will it really be useful?

If MPs couldn’t be bothered to turn up for debates, turn up merely to show their faces or just to stay for a while and leave early, etc. then even having the most advanced system in the world will be a waste of our taxpayer’s money.

Ultimately, we must never mistaken motion for action! I will list 3 issues that I have with PAP MPs’ performance in Parliament.

1) It is not uncommon to see more than half the house empty when Parliament is in session. Although I understand that MPs need not attend all parliamentary debates, there is still no excuse if such absenteeism has become habitual and widespread.

Singaporeans elected their MPs for more than just being their estate managers or showing their faces once in a while mingling with their residents at the hawker centres. Making an effort to attend parliamentary debates as often as possible shows discipline and seriousness in the MP’s attitudes towards his role even though many of our everyday HDB uncles and aunties do not understand that or do not bother about that.

2) Failure to speak up for their electorates. Looking at statistics, PAP MPs have failed to speak up in Parliament. Under an incompetent 4G leadership, we are besieged with so many challenges that must be tackled urgently – whether it is our low fertility rates, the government’s inability to create suitable jobs, the relentless increase in the cost of living, retirement inadequacies for many of our senior citizens, the PAP government’s failure to honour its own promise to return to CPF members their savings when they turned 55 years of age or the growing divide between the haves and have not in our society, etc. When PAP MPs draw such lucrative allowance but remain as quiet as a church mouse in Parliament, it hurts my conscience.

3) Too many PAP MPs have been seen sleeping when parliament is in session – just look at their many sleeping pictures circulating online. To add insult to injury, even the Leader of the House, Grace Fu’s pictures have been captured while she slept blissfully in her parliamentary seat.

As patriotic citizens, is it too much for us to demand that Parliamentary decorum and discipline must never be allowed to decline?

If the Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan Jin is truly worthy of his appointment, then he really should do something about MPs’ absenteeism and sleeping MP problems. If we can get our MPs’ disciplinary challenges straight, we are unlikely to need facial recognition system.

  • Live 4-cast parliament debate:

Live forecast parliament debate is more effective than a facial recognition system. Why waste money on the stupid high-cost camera system where the effectiveness is almost ZERO.

If the government is serious in looking forward to studying the turn-up rate for debates, then broadcasting is the best method to track the performance. There are no good reasons to hide. The good examples of tracking will be the British parliament debate, it is very transparent. Singapore has far behind and yet to catch up with such transparency.

  • Boh Kia See:

The absenteeism rate and issues with sleeping MPs is the result of two factors.

Firstly, there is really nothing to debate–everything have been settled beforehand and behind close doors. So why attend to watch the show when you already know the result. Would you attend a boxing match when you already know who won?

This shows the impotence of Parliament and the circus it has become.

The second factor is the lack of critical mass of opposition politicians and parties. This compounds the issue.

Maybe, a third factor is the Asian obsession with “orderliness”. Taken to the extreme, it becomes a kabuki show.

MPs are not supposed to be full time positions. So the wisdom of the old fart applies: What is wrong with collecting more money?

    Facial recognition for show only.
We need true commitment from our MPs.
There are issues that need to be discoursed openly and solutions sought.

    One grave issue is joblessness.
Another is ageing / medical cost.
    Housing is a perennial issue.
COL and citizen rights n dignity.
Non-sgs like ang mohs must know their place im OUR COUNTRY.
OVERCROWDING IS A RISING ISSUE not to be skirted.

Grassrooters taking advantage of their connections instead of readiness to SERVE THEIR NEIGHBOYRS,this relates to cohesiveness and non-interference with civil servants carrying out their duties to the nation.

Plenty of issues, showing dace only is of NO USE?

Every normal citizen of Singapore knows live telecast is the way to go for any true parliament, as live telecast keeps the politicians honestly on their toes and not have their mouthpieces states times and mediacorpse do the editing to show one side of the story only, the fake said.

But as every normal citizen of Singapore also knows, once live telecast is legislated, which sadly won’t happen until New Government forms, the current bunch of rotten lying pap folks in parleement shall, SHALL, die fastest.

Die fastest = die within one election cycle.

Will pap folks do something that prevents them from dipping their pliant pap parleement hands into citizens CPF money to enrich each other in pap clan?

    Surely NOT.

So although live telecast can even happen in Msia and Indosia, it won’t happen here in pap Singapore. Not until New Government by a better group of Singaporeans form and pap folks, alive or dead, are indicted under New Government new agc new cj new spf new cpib new bank negara.

  • why suffered in silence:

The intention is not to solve the poor attendance or lack of MPs participation
but is one of the regime’s showcase to the world that we are a smart nation.Probably they might get another award for being the first in the world or Asia to use such technology.Again lavishing our taxpayers’ money on trivial and insignificant issue rather than spending on more pressing needs like helping the elderly, jobless, homeless ,etc.

WHY bother with a facial recognition for? Just have an attendance register and make the MPs signed their names and constituency in it in front of the clerk and speaker. Failure to attend more than one session every quarter will result in them losing one month’s allowance. Likewise, sleeping in parliament for the first time should result in them being expelled from the session and marked as “absent”. Sleep twice and they lose one month’s pay. Sleep twice or miss two sessions and they lose three month’s pay. Then see if they improve in their performance or not…
