A disappointing performance at the SEA games: Why should PAP MPs head sporting organisations?

Singapore’s performance at the 30th SEA Games in the Philippines was disappointing at best. We drew level with weak Laos, and lost to Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. What is worse is that we did not even manage to score one single goal in the whole competition.

Many of us who are old enough will remember Singapore’s golden era in football when players like Quah Kim Song, Eric Paine, and Dollah Kassim brought home sporting glory and honour to our country and her people. Today, our team and their performances are a mere shadow of the good old ‘Kallang Roar’ days.

One sick phenomenon is that PAP politicians with no experience with sports whatsoever are parachuted to head Sporting Associations. Instead of producing good results, they have brought disgrace upon themselves, their political masters and disappointed Singaporeans.

Former PAP MP Choo Wee Khiang was convicted of cheating when he headed Singapore Table Tennis Association and was jailed. Another was under CPIB investigations when he was the former president of Football Association of Singapore.

It also sickens me that PAP Ministers have the audacity of announcing ambitions for Singapore to qualify for FIFA World Cup 2010 and 2034. Whilst we have faith in our sportspeople, it is easier said than done for those people living in their ivory towers to daydream instead of helping our sportsmen in real and meaningful ways towards realising those ambitions.

With such “outstanding” establishment people hoarding top appointments in Sporting Associations, how are we able to scale new sporting heights and bring home more glory?

Recount the history from 1970s where football was not political, managed by people who knew and love football. We were amongst the best then. Then came the politics, putting politicians into football from Mah Bow Tan, Ah Goh, ex SAF colonels and officers, cutting the budget and trying to make football a business with lowest cost but maximum return. CEO Ong is being politically correct by saying oversized National Stadium, he conveniently avoided saying “over-expensive” stadium managed by private ventures. Even the govt itself is avoiding National Stadium, moving its National Day Parade away since it so freaking expensive to rent it. A soccer team that avoids Stadium and play at those neighbourhood mickey mouse stadium expects to flourish? The decline of Sleague into a mickey mouse league where budget is cut so low that many players have to moonlight to make ends meet. In the last FAS election, the govt favoured politically aligned team won because of the character assassination of the competitor. We had no significant improvement with a political team that pays itself handsomely but players and training miserably. Every sport is failing now since the adaptation of politics and profit driven model, even polo is on the decline, table tennis, netball and so on. Singapore is now purely a business driven enterprise that only cares about bottomline, sports has no place in this country.

  • When sporeans think, pap sinks:

Well, they’ve achieved Olympic medals by buying a team of China Team B for the women table tennis. If pap remains in power, they could and would soon buy a whole soccer team comprising of different nationalities. Just give the players instant citizenship and tada! Sg will have a whole new soccer team and possibly could qualify for the world cup, why not?

These idiots know no shame. They’re best at using money to buy success…. short term success for their attention seeking master. They think that by putting the MIW to take charge of our sports associations, success will come easy if they buy foreigners.

I think it’s high time that we stop misleading the younger generation about Singapore soccer “Glory years of Quah Kim Song, Dollah Kassim and Eric Paine”. I was a kid then and I grew up with these household names. Mind you, during their time, Singapore never even qualified for the SEA Games (then known as SEAP Games withn only 7 countries taking part) final!

1973 in Singapore. We lost 3-0 to Malaysia to finish 4th!
1975 in Thailand, only 4 countries took part. We shared the bronze with Burma after a 2-2 draw.
1977 in KL. We lost 2-0 to Thailand and got thrashed 5-1 by Burma to finish last in the group.
1979 in Indonesia. Lost 3-0 to Indonesia, lost 2-0 to Malaysia, drew 2-2 with Thailand before miraculously beating Burma 2-1. But no top 3 finish!

Singapore best performances was in the 80′s when Fandi and Sundram were at their peak, they won the silver medal 3 times in 1983, 1985 and 1989.

So what glorious years are you talking about Quah Kim Song or Dollah Kassim?

During that era, the old National Stadium was completed to be able to fill up 60,000 fans and that’s when more people are able to watch soccer but we were only good in the Malaysia Cup against the kampong teams.

Our first international success achieved without foreigners came only in 1998 when we won the Tiger Cup after beating Vietnam 1-0 in the final.

So please stop misleading the younger fans about the “glorious years!!

I think NS has to a certain effect in our disappointed SEA Game football. Males interested in football, have to be trained from young(say, around early teen). By the time they are approaching NS age, there is no continuation and rhythm and they have be drafted into NS for 2 years plus yearly reservist trainings. Also, NS deferments are very hard to come by as the G is very strict on this.

I hope our football coach Fandi Ahmad with his vast experience in football, should not be afraid to voice out against the G if he has something in his chest, even if the G feels offended. It is for a long term good of our country. Do not let the G and their sports ministar dictate their terms, otherwise, it is useless to talk about year 2034. Remember Woody had failed us in Year 2010 ! Go and ask him why.

The “politics of dominance” will not produce world class athletes because it wants to control everything instead of allowing individual aspirations and creativity to flourish. The “bosses” can throw their weight around but end up putting obstacles in the way of others instead of helping to develop their potential. SG students excel at international academic competition only because that’s the emphasis in our school system – high scores and a scholarship into the core of elites; and then perpetuate the same system.

  • Darth Vader:

Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, Thomas Edison, Sim Wong Hoo. What do these five have in common? Any guesses anyone? Especially you don’t jump the gun? No? Okay, answers below

1: They’re all titans of industry who revolutionized and changed the world

2: They’re all Americans except for SWH, and even he became what he is today only because an American microchip manufacturer believed in him, AFTER he was rejected by the pap

3: None completed university. Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg all dropped out, SWH NEVER went to university at all, and in fact Thomas Edison had very little formal education at all

So WHY then are they ALL so successful? Obviously there must be something that is lacking here. And here are some of the likely reasons

1: Unlike Singapore, the US is not a top down society. Just look at such failed states like the soviet union, democratic kampuchea, dpr korea and venezuela, which all have top down command societies. Sure, you could argue that Singapore is a successful top down society, but that was only because lky assembled a team of dedicated selfless leaders. Just look at the pap’s current team of idiots led the biggest idiot of them all; one f**k-up after another

2: Singapore is run by elite bilingual scholars, which would be fine in of itself if they were dedicated to serving the people. But the very fact that they’re so handsomely paid means that they’ll not only want to protect their position, they’ll want to pass it to their children and grandchildren as well

3: In lky’s own words, Singapore is an academic-based meritocracy. Just one slight problem. Being academically does NOT translate into skill or talent, let alone capable leadership, as can be seen in our 3G & 4G ministers

So, how do we change things for the better? A hard reboot is necessary i.e. we need to boot the pap out. Stop hoping they’ll change. They created this system, they benefit from it, so why would they change it? So for everyone here, if you truly want a better future for Singapore, you have only one option

And that is to vote the pap out totally

Thanks for sharing your deep insight. The names you mentioned were all risk takers when they dropped out of college to pursue their dreams. They took their chances and succeeded. But there are also those that did not make it, and we do not hear of them. In SG, PAP has built a system that centers around them. Too rigid control, too much stress, too costly and too much kiasuim here to produce risk takers.
