Words of wisdom from Thailand’s richest man, to our PAP Education Minister

In an exclusive interview with the Bangkok Post in Paris, Thailand’s richest man Mr Dhanin Chearavanont shared his view that students should spend far lesser time in school and university and more time gaining more real world experiences in this digital era.

The learned tycoon was quoted as saying:  “Today, many students are not armed with the right skills to meet the demands of the labour market. Nowadays, students do not need to learn facts by rote simply because they have all the information at their fingertips. Furthermore, machine learning, artificial intelligence can process the information, memorise and calculate much faster and far better than humans, so, there is no reason to continue using the same old methods that schools and universities are employing”.

He added that “The best university is Society. A classroom cannot instill wisdom. Wisdom can only be learned through real life problems. In class, students only get second hand knowledge while life is all about experiences. Our education system is still producing a workforce skilled for a previous era while the world has moved on and business landscape has evolved since that time”.

Singaporeans must be too familiar with all that when our universities are producing PHV drivers while Indian nationals are stealing our well-paying jobs. It looks like our PAP Education Ministers are sitting too comfortably in their thick leather chairs, dreaming and counting their fat salaries.

We have to give our children something that machines and technologies cannot match such as values, beliefs, independence of thoughts and while talking about that, we have so many blind PAP suckers quite incapable of deeper critical thinking, teamwork, love and caring for others.

That’s right education does not give you the right skills. At best it gives you a critical mind and problem solving. It does not teach you the nitty gritty of various industries. That in itself is another learning curve.

So what this guy is saying is – no need to go to school. Learn fro mreal experience. Bullshit.

In the real world most people need a skill and some form of education to get through life. If the school system is wrong then change the system.

Saying you do not need school is saying you only need to know how to survive on the street. There is then no need for ethics, art, culture, history, or anything that makes us human, Just live like a street gangster from what you learn outside.

Let us do away with schools in Singapore then, and people can jus tlet their children get their experience from the street.

Although he is a tycoon he makes no sense.

  • General Idea:

Our education system give you only a general idea. You need to go deeper and specialize in the field that you are interested in to become an expert ready for the industry.

That’s why our Paper Generals are at a lost when they are thrown into shipping, Railway System etc. PAP believes that the Paper Generals are good at everything and now they can see the results.

What to do as Pinky himself is a Paper General.

School is needed for professional degrees to be Lawyers, Doctors/Surgeons, Engineers etc.
Technical school like ITE teach hand-ons skills e.g. electrician, plumbers car mechanic is necessary.

But for Liberal Arts e.g. Literature, History etc. (Hobby degrees – no need school, can go online and search lah) waste of money, can’t find job one.
Math and science also can self study one – online course very cheap. Most real world job don’t need PhDs for these fields. Will likely end up as uber driver also.
Social science e.g. economics also can self study one.
Entrepreneurship and business mind is born talent, cannot be taught one. Either you have it or you don’t. Taking a course in entrepreneurship is useless.

The jobs can come to Singapore but what for ? These jobs go to FT in Singapore and not to locals. There are more than 2 millions of foreigners working in Singapore and as more come in, they will replace local PMETS who will end up being unemployed or under employed.

This will happen to all Singaporeans including yourself very soon if the PAP allows more foreigners to come and take away our jobs.

The only way to prevent this from happening is to VOTE PAP Out in the coming GE.

Another irresponsible poster, IB or not.

    ===

    1) After dinner …
When I reflect on the jobless days where we have to buy the basic necessities …, what we enjoy today is a world of tremendous difference. One is heaven and one is earth.

—> blah blah blah, still thinking of the good old days. LKY is dead and your context of reference is already wrong to begin with. When you die and leave this place, the next 2 generations has to bear your folly.

    2) But the luxury we are enjoying could end overnight, which some of us might not be aware.
Our three meals don’t come naturally. They need to be created. We need very wise citizens who understand the importance of political stability. Then we can create our meals.

–> Trying to link the idea of one’s three meals with the PAP via the enshrined political stability (taken from the many PAP propaganda sprouted over the years), and appealing to the readers’ ego of being a ‘sage’ to make them agree with the writer.

–> No one advocates for a complete opposition govt with no room for PAP (not possible anyway thanks to people like you). Instead, it is to increase their relevance via numbers (breach the 2/3 line!)

–> I will argue instead that single party dominance languishes their intellectual quality. If the idea of competition can be introduced to every Singaporean’s life, why the hell not to the govt. If you gonna quite ‘stability’, I quote back the same thing.

    3) The role of the government …. Just by starting a famous food stall, you can be actually be a millionaire.

–> Yea man, at the expense of the many that tries to achieve this dream and die along they way, there will only be a few millionaire, two of them being: the coffeeshop owner and the PAP, both via rental and/or taxes. You are also pretty sly in not saying how long it takes to reach this millionaire status as a normal hawker, and at what cost.

    4) Remember, once the confidence is lost, stability will be gone and we are finished. We will be jobless. Today our unemployment rate is around 3%.
Simon. Is our entire nation of citizens made up of taxi drivers? Grab drivers? Food deliverers?

–> 3%??? HAHAHA. PLEASE! Its relevance and accuracy has been heavily scrutinized and demolished by netizens. Stats, damn stats, and lies!
Also, trying to play with extremes? You are missing the point of Simon’s post, tsk tsk tsk.

    5) Luckily, Singaporeans are still fighting fit and well. We are still one of the world’s most competitive economy. That is why until today we can still compete globally for jobs. Once we can’t compete globally, we will be jobless.

–> Only one comment: The govt is whitewashing the local populace with new citizens frequently, so who is the ‘we’ you speak of?

Ha-ha-ha! S’pore was already the “PEARL OF THE ORIENT” long before the PAP was even founded. My Merdeka generation feasted on Promfret Fish & Ikan Kurau (Ngor Hee) every day for lunch & dinner from the British Colonial days well until the early 1970s.
To be frank, life was better then! Your 3 meals today (under the PAP’s Chap Chye Png Economy) aren’t as sumptuous as before PAP took power! Then, it was Shark’s Fin broth, braised Abalone & steamed Crabs – can you afford these now?
