Retiree: Why are MRI changes at CGH more expensive than a private clinic?

A retiree has written to the Straits Times forum to question why the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) charges that he was quoted at Changi General Hospial (CGH) was much higher than rates charged by a Private Clinic.

In his letter published on Friday (21 Dec), Lim Chuan Poh said that he had visited Changi General Hospital on Mon (16 Dec) and was informed by the doctor that an MRI scan was needed to ascertain the severity of his suspected rotator cuff tear.

He was quoted $1,450 for the MRI scan, and was told that the next available appointment was only in late March. As his shoulder was casuing him discomfort, he decided to have his MRI scan done at a private clinic, where he paid less than $600, including GST.

Lim then said: “I am puzzled by the difference in charges between CGH and the private imaging clinic I went to. What is the basis for CGH charging so much more for a similar service? My concern is whether, besides the MRI, general hospitals are over-charging patients for other services. I hope the hospital and the Ministry of Health will look into reviewing healthcare charges.”

What do you think?

@Mr. Lim; you need to pay the Health Minister, Acting Minister, Second Minister, MOH’s perm sec, other staff of MOH. Not forgetting all those none medical staff like security, gardeners, cleaners, those admin staff checking visitors, including the concierge opening the taxi door for you. What about the plants in the garden and the water fountain?

All these cost money you know. To review healthcare charges means Ministers have to cut their pays!! That’s a NO, NO!!

  • No money don't sick:

MOH has been made a corporate entity under Temasek Holdings since about two years ago; isn’t this unethical? Use taxpayers money to fund ministries only to make profits on those same taxpayers when they fall sick? This roughshod medical capitalism is not even competitive compared to the competition. Just check out the prices of medicines at Mustafa Center and the pharmacies in Johor Bahru.

  • I'm Halimah jiak liao bee:

You only have to look at your Polyclinic bill, PAP charge you $48 for consultation, before their so called subsidy.
You need to ask why the consultation fee is so much higher than private clinics, which is normally around $25..
And where does the remaining $$ go to after the subsidy ??? Left pocket to Right pocket ??
    Very creative accounting .

  • Change We Must:

Government health care always inflate the price to show that public health care are highly subsidized. Don’t forget, those doctors in the polyclinics are novice compared to private clinic. Can we bring this up to the consumer association for profiteering?
Now, I also realized the new billing statement of polyclinics, they did not breakdown the consultation fees and the subsidy. They just state one lump sum of how much is subsidized. Again cheating us?? This has to be sorted out in the coming election, since they are not listening.
