The curious case of JSA6983

Earlier this week, Facebook page SG Road Vigilante posted a dashcam video of a Malaysian-registered truck beating a red light at Yishun Ring Road. While the action of beating a red light is in itself not a rare phenomenon, the group decided to do some further checks on the lorry.

It was discovered that the lorry in question had raked up more than $6,700 in road traffic fines. Of the fines, some had been outstanding for more than 20 months (i.e. since Feb 2018):

In a media report last April, it was reported that the Immigration and Checkpoint Authority had implemented new measures to turn away foreign motorists with outstanding fines. These fines pertain to traffic, parking or vehicular emissions offences.

The report noted that drivers of foreign vehicles had accumulated about 400,000 outstanding fines amounting to $32 million.

Evidently then, the measures does not seem to be effective granted that vehicles such as JSA6983 are still plying the Singaporean roads.

Not easy to claim against foreign-registered vehicles in the event of an accident

In any case, reckless drivers on Singapore roads will do no good for local motorists. While there is some recourse in the event of an accident with a Singapore-registered car, the opposite could be said if one meets with an accident with a foreign-registered vehicle.

Indeed, according to a write-up by popular car portal sgcarmart, “claiming against an insurance company from across the border is a tiresome process that possesses a very high chance of yielding zero results” and someone successfully did so took a protracted four years.

It also noted that “Should [the driver] insist on not paying, nothing much can be done and it is not wise to take up a legal lawsuit due to the potentially copious amount of legal fees incurred, unless the accident is very severe”.

Given the above, do you think that the authorities are doing enough to safeguard the interest of local motorists?

  • UniQ:

Not forgetting the ‘Hell-Riders’ zooming every single day on our highways !! It is highly suspicious that many do not even have a valid riding licence or riding training as they ride as if the entire Singapore roads belongs to them !!

Imagine how much trouble and $ these riders are causing the local economy when they are involved in an accident on the highway, including hogging in droves on the roads.

  • Dont trust PAP:

In Singapore, it is big fish eat small fish.
PAP demolish Opposition and dissenters, legally or otherwise because they have the machinery to do so.
Motorcyclists get killed not just by big Malaysia registered trucks but also by Singapore registered cars.
Even people get killed for no reasons by reckless drivers, eg the grab driver who killed 2 recently.
I am a true blue Singaporean, so PAP please do not assume I am interfering in domestic politics, POFMA if you may.
