Pritam Singh: WP needs to contest and win 1/3 of seats in Parliament

At the annual WP Members’ Forum on Sunday (19 Jan), Secretary-General Pritam Singh spoke of the need to attract “quality candidates from a range of backgrounds and life experiences” for the upcoming general elections, and hopefully these candidates will be envisioned by the public to become competent MPs.

An elected opposition will act as a check and balance

Mr Singh explained that the role of an effective opposition is “to make sure that the ruling party does not have a blank cheque to do whatever it wants” and that “more NCMP seats will not perform the checking role to induce the PAP to change its political course”. Ultimately, “the opposition’s role is meaningful when voters elect an opposition with an elected mandate to speak for Singaporeans”.

In this regard, Singh argues that a 1/3 balance would be an appropriate “numerical balance” and an “inherent checking mechanism in our parliamentary democracy”. This is because with the opposition holding more than 1/3 of the seats, the “PAP cannot change the constitution at its pleasure unless it has more that 2/3 of the seats in Parliament, like it can today”.

He then cites the elected presidency as an example:

“If it has less than 2/3 of the seats in Parliament, the PAP will have to rationally persuade Singaporeans, for example that a rotation of races for the Elected Presidency is an urgent necessity that cannot wait. From my conversation with many minority Singaporeans when the Elected Presidency was amended in this term of Government – particularly those from the Malay community – the demand for a Malay President was not a particularly pressing concern. Most were in fact more enthusiastic about Malay MPs taking up ministerial appointments in high-profile Ministries than the Elected Presidency.

In my opinion, the urgency to amend the Elected Presidency was politically manufactured by the PAP. The real risk appeared to be Tan Cheng Bock’s potential participation in the last Presidential elections, and the election of a President who was unlikely to be the PAP’s preferred choice”.

Aljunied-Hougang Town Council will set aside around $1 million to improve connectivity

Mr Singh also touched on the finances of the Aljunied-Hougang Town Council, saying that it had operating surplus in excess of $7 million for this parliamentary term. Of these, “around $1 million” will be used to improve connectivity and amenities in the town – more linkways, drop-off points and amenities for residents.

Will you support the goals of the Worker’s Party in the upcoming GE?

Mr. Singh; the aim is to kick out PAP totally. To deny PAP two-third majority is only when “stupidity still has no cure”.

    Vote out the PAP.

    Dear Mr Pritam Singh,

It should not be just a 1/3.
Being co-driver or just for checking is no longer enough.

Be prepared to form coalition government and able to manage a less than 1/3 mini-white-walkers opposition in the parliament.

Be prepared to work with SDP, PSP and other parties who are elected by the people. There is no time to groom a replacement gahmen.

Are the 70% too TIMID to question or they lack IQ to question?

If Timid , such a country has no future. Is it sovereign if population is Timid?

If it’s due to Lack IQ, such a country also has no future. The whole population may need to be replaced by foreigners to have a future.

When the Constitution is abused and breached, what happened? Nothing!. Example “all persons are equal before the Law” but some are exempted from the law.

It is very unlike people in the US who will go ALL OUT – tear face, to defend their Constitution.

So Pritam Singh is incorrect. It should be the other way around, Oppositions must win by 2/3 majority to be able to make changes and improve Singapore and stop the mass Singapore Dilution. We must stop being cheated with MiloIndianCumMalay and wife $300,000.00 per day.

WP can win by 1/3 if they wanted to.

  • Do not vote for WP:

WP still only wants to be “co-driver” (and most likely will not join an opposition alliance). If it does not have the confidence to lead then it should step aside. Singaporeans should vote not vote of WP. WP is a fake opposition.

    Mr Singh,
I would not describe Singapore as a Democracy. The western parliamentary system we inherited has been mutilated to such an extent that it is no more a Democracy. However, it is true that we need to have many non PAP MPs to rebuild our Singapore.

  • opposition dude:

I agree that there needs to be more opposition MPs in parliament but not necessarily that all must be from WP. At this point in time I feel that 1/3 of opposition MPs in parliament won’t be sufficient simply for the fact that PAP would have double the numbers in parliament. It would still be business as usual for PAP and there won’t be any change when parliament needs to vote on something.

A good number of voters are disappointed in how WP has performed in parliament since they won Aljunied but these people are also missing a very major point. They only have 6 of their people in parliament against more than 80 zoo animals, just how would you expect 6 to fight 80 and be victorious I just do not know. WP has spoken out against PAP a number of times (Sylvia’s test balloon is a good example) but there is no way in hell they can be speaking out on every little issue.

If a majority of the kiasees can be convinced to vote opposition especially in the north and west we can look forward to PSP and perhaps even SDP enter parliament. If you don’t have faith in WP then perhaps another opposition party might be able to perform to your expectations.

Let’s wait for the announcement of the next election and see what has changed for all wards before becoming overnight analysts in trying to predict how many more seats the opposition might win.

Baby steps fellow Singaporeans! The kiasees won’t settle for a coalition government because to them it means the country will be broken, we will all be sleepig on the streets with no jobs and will have to work as maids or construction workers abroad!

Kiasees you know one lah, no need to say too much about them.

  • Harder Truths:

    Mr Pritam

I hope the opposition are successful this time (although I personally do not have any measure of faith in the ballsless 70%).

May I suggest WP needs to communicate more with the voters and other parties. I realise that this is a big challenge for your team but you can overcome certain limitations imposed by the clowns by working directly or indirectly with other parties for the common good. Don;t try to go it alone this time.

This may be the last chance for $G citizens to vote for change – the clowns would like nothing better than to eliminate the oppo after this next GE should they win again in large numbers.

As everyone has seen since the last election, all kinds of underhanded tricks have been used – and this trickery will be continued – well after the GE to silence the nation once and for all.

Whatever happens – win or lose – you have my respect and support.

  • Boh Kia See:

Just one third is not enough. If that is the case, you need to factor in the other opposition parties as well with WP taking one third of the votes.

What is needed is to ensure that PAP is out of Government. This is important because the PAP is simply too entwined with the country and needs to be aborted before the country can progress and move to the next level of development.

Simply adding restraints on the PAP will not allow the country to move forward. For example, if you want information on jobs for Singaporeans, the PAP can continue to stall not not provide as they are doing now. There is nothing you can do about that if you only have one third of the seats in Parliament. With the PAP still in control, they need not provide any information or change any regulation that benefits them. It would be a paralysis of Government–the worse case scenario.

Need to get them out totally, so citizens can get a chance for a better future.

Work out in your mind as to what you can change with one third of the seats in Parliament and PAP is runs the show. Can you release Ho Jinx’s salary info? can WP change CPF regulations? PA being an arm of the PAP?

You can see, it is a question of VTO the PAP–nothing less will work.

even if WP is pap infiltrated, as long as it is WP vs pap, our votes go to WP. as long as not pap, good enough.

The political landscape has changed and WP is still a few steps behind.

Pritam is still talking as though he would be the only opposition party. He should realise that WP has a lot of company now. Thos other political parties also have a lot of credibility if not more so than WP.

They have quality candidates and despite not being in Parliament managed to get themselves heard.

So WP should wake up and acknowledge that the PAP is rotten. The solution is not about curbing their power but a fundamental system overhaul to put Singapore on the road to progress again.

WP are already dreaming and while trying to dance with the PAP is not considering the interest of the citizens.

In all that political parties do or intend to do, the rights of citizens and their welfare must be the pivotal beginning of all strategies and policies.

What WP is saying simply does not give me this confidence.

Let me use the 4D prize money as an example why we cannot let PAP “run” free.

Here is the chart showing the changes to the 3rd prize:

In the past – $500 (for $1 “Big”)
Now (I can’t recall the date the change was made) – $490

    For $1 “Small”:

    Past – $1000
    Now – $800

This is an illustration of absolute control that nobody can do anything about.

So, if we extrapolate to the political situation, the PAP will get away with anything if they have more than 2/3

  • I address Pritam:

    First, Pritam, walk the talk.
Has wp been perceived to check and balance the pap so far ?

It’s done an appalling job. People perceive wp as TIMID. No protests, no political forums organized under LTK and Pretty boy pritam.

The only participation I can think of is a video of Sylvia Lim congratulating SDP on its launch of some GE rally of sorts. And she did not personally attend. Just a video message.

So, WP must show it’s intellectually honest.

If not because of PAP I would not have voted wp.

  • Jman:

Britannica defines “checks and balances” as a principle of government under which separate branches are empowered to prevent actions by other branches and are induced to share power.

While WP might be in a position to prevent actions by the Govt, I am not sure if WP is in any position to share power. Because of the series of serious errors in theory and judgement in the WP’s handling of the TC matter. And up to the recent refusal for LTK and SL to recuse themselves from the TC matters, I wonder if the WP A team is up to political leadership at all.

The WP has assiduously nurtured the ground with much legwork over the years to connect with and speak for ordinary folk. But that is just one half of the story at most. Political leaders must have a good grasp of theory and exercise good judgement. Otherwise we’d be led into dark corners of the jungle where we get eaten up alive. And this is where WP is done an exceedingly poor job and is exceedingly inept.

For whatever shortcomings the existing Govt and PAP might have, we vote in a bunch of people who are not up to the job and we are signing our own death certificate. All this talk about the perceived dumb and silent majority is badly misplaced. You vote for leaders who are good only at talking, and you’d sink to the bottom like a deadweight before you even realise what is going on.
