Beneath the politically correct answers lie a deeper skeptcism towards government

It was interesting to watch the Q&A section at the recent Singapore Perspectives 2020 conference, and how DPM Heng Swee Keat tackled these questions. Tacking ‘difficult’ questions ranging from GST hikes to the application POFMA, I can see that Minister Heng gave all the politically correct answers.

But really, the deeper question that we need to ask ourselves is this – if the PAP government is doing the right things  for both the short and long term, then why is skepticism towards the PAP government growing fast among our citizens?

First, the trust deficit in this PAP government is so glaring. Our citizens trusted the PAP government to honour their promise to return people’s CPF savings when they turn 55 years of age but their trust has been betrayed. Also, generations of HDB flat buyers were sold on the promise of asset enhancement by various heavyweight ministers such as the late Lee Kuan Yew and Goh Chok Tong but too many of them ended in disappointment.

Next, there is a growing lack of accountability. Resident at Ang Mo Kio GRC are largely from a working-class background and when their S&CC charges were squandered under the collective watch of their 6 elected MPs, none of them had the barest of humility or any sense of shame to resign or at least apologise for their lapses. Instead, all of them pretended or behaved as if it had nothing to do with them.

Lastly, we have a growing inequality between the haves and have-nots. In Singapore, income inequality under the PAP government is one of the highest in the world and is ever widening. While it is wrong to put the brakes on top earners, more must be done to truly address the struggles of our citizens at the bottom. More than 250,000 people are living in absolute poverty and another 100,000 are living in relative poverty cases. PAP ministers feel entitled to their large salaries but hundreds of thousands of our low-income do not have that kind of protection.

In short, our future premier must not only be politically correct or clever at policy making levels – they must never, never, never be divorced from everyday living of the bottom.

  • Gongkias will vote pap again:

    Amongst his answers, I sibeh ‘like’ DPM Heng’s answer to the question concerning new citizens. Heng said that having new citizens is very much part of pap G’s effort to take care of singaporeans.

    I really sibeh ‘like’ what he says and I thinks singaporeans should learn from Heng and the pap.

    In the coming GE, singaporeans should vote for opposition parties and have new parties and new faces in parliament. This will tell pap that having opposition members is very much part of singaporeans effort to take care of the pap. Since pap is clueless and often bankrupt of ideas, it’s time singaporeans show concern and take care of them by sending them into ‘retirement’.

  • opposition dude:

    Simon Lim the reason why there is growing skepticism towards the party we all love to hate is because all their nonsense about caring for us and looking after us have all been talk and nothing else.

    Just take the cost of living for example. How many years have we mentioned about this topic alone and why have we never ever once felt the cost of living come down? Because PAP continuously raises transport fares yearly in addition to S&CC charges and everything else in between. And they have the cheek to constantly tell us they are looking after us too!

    So after all that they do the usual wayang of giving out the occasional transport and GST voucher and declare all is well and good.

    Let’s all give it to them real GOOD in the next GE!

  • Boh Kia See:

    Politics is not about words. It is about channeling the collective aspirations of the people towards a greater and better future. This may sound naive and theoretical.

    It takes all citizens to come together to mesh together over time to create identity, pride and common purpose. This cannot happen under the PAP rulers and their stratified society. It will never happen and there is no common bond between each level of society.

    The most important factor is the decoupling of the country from the party. Citizens need to take back their country that was deceptively stolen from them by the PAP.

    What is the purpose of the F&Q? At the end of the session, did any one able to change the ruler’s thinking or got enlightened about the path forward?

    Citizens should wake up VTO the PAP. They are no longer appropriate for the times we live in and the modern environment.

    There is no other way. VTO the PAP

  • 70% sheep says, NO Problem:

    pap is always doing the wrong thing.

    1, ownself pay ownself S$m is absolutely wrong. it is call stealing outside Singapore. of course, pap folks say, approved by parleement. but this is dishonest. because parleement is pap pliant. and pap folks who use parleement to justify the theft know it is so. why not call a referendum and let everyone see of ownself pay ownself S$m is not theft.

    2, lying publicly is shamefully wrong. how can INSIDE 200m be said to be not within 200m? how can INDIAN be said to be malay? in this instance, pap not only is wrong by lying. pap is wrong by abusing of power to insist black is white.

    3, bad budgeting. because pap wastes a lot of money in a bloated bureaucracy over paying clan members S$m as loyalty bonus, especially in gic temasick, pap forever insists need for GST to rise when in actual fact GST should have already gone to zero by NOW.

  • Tremendous:

    Members of a certain party know that trust has eroded. But they blame it on worldwide trends that this is happening without an honest look at themselves. HSK says he is going to let the middle and lower income have more say. He could have these people have more say and he will then say or do something non major along the same direction and trumpet to everyone. He could have these people have more say but he has the last say. We can refer to their last days to slip the population white paper through and unilaterally raise the president’s salary after HSK ran the National Conversation. There is no point wasting brain juices trying to fix the opposition if you are doing a good job.

  • Financially Speaking:

    S’pore is tribal in the sense of social disparity & non-cohesiveness against a common identity. Unmistakably, a Divide & Rule mechanism in place.

    There is a “Not In My Backyard” NIMBY sense of community spirit which is none of my business if my neighbours flat is burning. How did it ever come to this?

    The famous S’pore motto uttered by PAP IBs & Grasslooters, “You die is your business!”

    The reason is Financially Clear:
    * PAP Govt created a Artificially Competitive Society based on Unbridled Desires but Limited Means of achieving it – Meritocracy (Elitism), COE, High housing prices, etc;
    * Free entry of Foreigners into Economy – Wage Suppression, No protection against Local loss of meaningful work, Foreigners Enclaves, Generous Scholarships, grants to foreigners but harsh penalties against Locals who don’t pay up fees [PSLE slip withholding, S&CC owings with police detention) "Double Standards";
    * Govt-initiated Inflationary Eco-system - HDB shop rents increases, HDB BTO flats price increases, Public Transportation fare increases, Utilities rate increases, etc. Life becomes unbearable;
    * Empty narratives about first-class political leadership & brilliant civil service when POFMA silenced critics (easy way out of difficult situation without need for explanation), failures are evidently all around us (Amaravati City stop by political change; Hyflux financial bankruptcy [34k investors out of pocket] & slow resolution [White horse rescuers came & went]; Water, electricity & GST increases in the face of economic slowdown, etc); &
    * Continual & extravagant Infrastructural Spending – no ROI, scant evidence of funding resources, etc. Are tax payers financially paying for such grandiose projects? What about govt reserves?

    S’porean voters, at the end of the day, are responsible for the own fate. They deserved the govt they elect!
