PM Lee: Staying open to talent is the key for Singapore to prosper

Speaking at an interview to conclude the World Economic Forum, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said the key for Singapore to prosper lies in staying open to business and talent from around the globe.

PM Lee said that many companies who are breaking new ground have a diverse mix of global talent.

“It is here because that is the way our economy can prosper, and that is where we can generate jobs for the 40 per cent of Singaporeans who are working [in the company]… If they were not here, those jobs would not exist”.

And if you said: ‘We want Singaporeans to take over the jobs, which the non-Singaporeans are holding’, I’m not sure that we will be able to make it work.”

Nonetheless, the government needs to convince Singaporeans that they are well taken care of,  and the government needs to ensure “that [Singaporeans] feel they are taken care of and in Singapore, this is a Singapore for Singaporeans”.

To do so, the government was investing in its efforts to up-skill its people and stay competitive amid technological disruption.

Citing the Singapore Democratic Party as an example, PM Lee also felt that some opposition parties “see a divide” and “want to make it wider and exploit it”.

“It’s important for us to explain to Singaporeans that we are doing this to make things work for Singaporeans, and this is the best strategy for Singapore to prosper.”

Do you agree with him?

  • Show us that u really mean it:

He and his inept gov keeps singing the same song before every GE…
We’re sick of their broken promises.
Cant even take care of our own sgs well but thinking of foreigners first.
Even his own family is estranged..
With you, for you, for Singapore is one big lie.
He doesnt even know what it means.
Do the right thing and vote him out first!

I mean real talents, but not the fake ones flooding our country-compliments of LHL’s gov’s open leg policies.

  • PAP's Greed:

Singaporeans are already very upset with PAP and many of the 70% sheep population have started join opposition camp.

PAP can continue to promote FT and their families from the villages.

The truth is that PAP will suffer a huge setback in the coming election. Likely, PAP will lose at least 2 GRCS and at least 3 SMCs.

PAP’s final Vote % will be between 50-55%.

Parliamentary debates will be broadcast Live for all Singaporeans to see how their respective MPs and Ministers are performing, as some of the unpopular Bills are POFMA, CECA..etc will be repealed.

Finally, we will get to see Mrs Pinky’s salary and also the PR-Citizen population breakdown.

“It’s important for us to explain to Singaporeans that we are doing this to make things work for Singaporeans, and this is the best strategy for Singapore to prosper.”

Best strategy for SINGAPORE to prosper.
SINGAPORE prosper does not mean Singaporeans prosper.

Actually, it could mean the reverse. SiNGAPORE prosper at the expense of Singaporeans. The gov is getting richer but real Singaporeans are getting poorer.

I have no issue with the likes of Pony Ma, Jack ma, Bill Gates or Donald Trump to work or migrate to Singapore, but take issue with that security guard abuser and his kind.

  • Harder Truths:

The unfilial one has let out a few things with this confession

$G education system is incapable of producing talent – only slave labour who must say yes to everything from the government

SG locals will always be third class at work and replaced by FT as this is ‘necessary for $G’s survival’.

There is no Plan B – FT inflow is crucial because this is the only way they can maintain the (fraudulent) economy and thus their power.

There is nothing the pappies can do about the $G -born continuing to lose out in greater numbers and ta younger ages. $G locals have to fend for themselves.

The local population will continue to sink as less locals can afford bringing up children or even get married.

Local girls prefer to marry FT as they have better prospects and can move back overseas – local men to them are f**ked from NS onward

The government knows what $G born are going through but does not care and/or cannot do anything about it.

You decide if this is worth clowns running the $G circus.

  • Boh Kia See:

The Clown and his circus troupe should realise that no opposition party is talking about isolating the island and cease having talents in Singapore. No one is advocating pulling up the draw bridge to Singapore.

What opposition parties in Singapore, generally are saying is the degree and the lack of identification of talent allowed to come into Singapore. That fact should be driven into the heads of those elites who refuse to recognise it. The PAP’s extremism seems to extend to viewing every issue in extreme and absolute terms as well.

I am not aware of any opposition party trying to drive any wedge against different sectors of the community. In fact, I think there is general cohesion and respect among opposition parties in not criticizing the work of other opposition parties. Perhaps they recognise that Singaporeans are bearing the brunt and suffering under the PAP regime. It is work of opposition parties to ensure that those policies and their proponents should be discarded. There is no other way to move forward.

VTO the PAP–for a better Singapore.

  • lying pap S$m thieving liars:

    1, INSIDE 200m is not within 200m.

    2, INDIAN is malay.

3, whenever pap lies, it always start with the phrase, For The Good of Singaporeans. Yet, when statistics are shown, it is always based on residents, aka citizens + aliens. WHY? because For Singaporeans is a lie. because for Residents, aka for aliens, is the true situation.

Does pap S$m folks really care if GDP growth is via citizens or aliens? ffff. No. pap S$m folks don’t care.

All companies, ours included, hire cheapest. No local sheep worth nus ntu smu salt shall work for us. but aliens willing to take sometimes 50% less, no need CPF, and no need disruption due to NSR duties.

We always hire that alien when available. and they are available.

4, 70% sheep has made pap S$m folks very bold in lying with eyes wide open. Has anyone seen a pap S$m folk son daughter nephew niece cousin brother-in-law sister-in-law jobless? ffff. No.

in fact, all of them, jobless only because they don’t want to work. not because there is no work.

gic temasick plenty of S$m no need to account for anything jobs.

look at pap clown wife. jobless? ffff. No. S$100m pa temasick job so Internet says. heng wife jobless. ffff. No. S$m pap job.

ng eng hen wife jobless? ffff. No. last check. very lucrative job in pap hospital.

take ng eng hen wife. of course, ng and wife say wife job due to talent. ffff. if so talent, why in pap hospital and not in PRIVATE hospital? WHY?

For Singaporeans so pap S$m folks say, each time they start to lie for something. But in truth, for themselves, for their S$m GDP growth bonus brought about by aliens being hired by the tonnes.

  • blueview:

What kind of “Talent” is he talking about? English-Speaking talent? He wants Singaporeans to speak proper English is it? Like what the Hiri Kumar openly said one time?

Then, bloody hell……tell MOE to employ British teachers to teach English Language and Literature in all schools and get all Singaporean teachers to learn and speak proper English without the la, leh, mah, meh, ayioh, alamak, etc…..basically learn to speak English as it is!

Our stupid MPs and PM must define what is the talent they are looking for. Spell it out boldly. Tell your citizens what kind of talent you are looking for. Even some of our MPs speak horribly.

Look at how Singaporeans from 1800s to 1960s and 70s learnt to speak proper English. Back then Singaporeans spoke better English not Singlish. Also, in those days we were exposed to a lot more English dramas, cartoons, news, documentaries, etc…through Channel 5!

Today, with Cable TV, people are more interested in Chinese dramas, Korean dramas, Japanese dramas, Malay dramas, Indian dramas.

So, can PM Lee, explicitly open his mouth and drop the TRUTH about the “talent” he is referring to? It will wake up Singaporeans and they can start watching more English shows and news to learn to speak better English.

Inability to speak proper English (not about English writing) is the only talent I see Singaporeans lacking. The majority of FTs and FWs about 90% DO NOT HAVE OUT OF THIS WORLD SUPER UNIVERSAL SPECIAL RARE TALENTS …..this notion is pure bullshit! Only maybe 5 to 10% FTs/FWs are highly talented.

  • Financially Speaking:

High lofty pay can distort one’s logical thinking ability. Globalisation had already ended after Donald Trump came to power in 2016. The US-China trade dispute which began in 2019 has many Disruptive Elements which would cause a very different Global Economic Order to emerge after 2020.

There will be new Paradigm Shifts in the New World Economic Order:
    1. Climate Change will forced the reduction in carbon emissions & drastically reduce the Economic Growth factor (hint: Affect GDP Growth) in favour for protecting the Climate. The present-day Fossil Fuel-driven Economy can’t continued as it were;

    2. Consumption would be curtailed in order to conserve resources & people would begin to adapt to difference mindsets in order to protect the fragile environment that we live in to survive for the future. It would spell the end of the MNC;

    3. The present day Coronavirus epidemic (Wuhan virus) will drastically change travel patterns & immigration. It will also drastically reduce the Global economic activity as people cut back on travel & economies dependent on tourism will suffer greatly. Longer-term, travel would be curtailed as richer economies drawn up strict health screening requirements to prevent free flow of people & pandemics;

    4. Bilateral trade would pick up where Globalisation ended. Intermediary activities would decline as trade would be conducted on a barter trade basis. The Reason: US$ decline in use as a Reserve Currency for Global Trade. This shift has great implication for the S’pore Economy!

S’pore govt’s stubborn adherence to their policies reveals a deep lack of understanding as well as a lack of foresight blinded by the riches in front of them.

The 70% voters must understand that their sons & daighters’ future are jeopardize by the current “brain-dead” policies which would soon be proven to be terrible directions taken by a misaligned govt more interested in self glorification than in managing a once-proud nation!

  • Sojoürner of Truth:

The most basic model economists use to explain technology’s impact treats it as a simple multiplier for everything else, increasing overall productivity evenly for everyone. This model is used in most introductory economics classes and provides the foundation for the common — and, very sensible — intuition that a rising tide of technological progress will lift all boats equally, making all workers more productive and hence more valuable…

A slightly more complex and realistic model, however, allows for the possibility that technology may not affect all inputs equally but instead favor some more than others. Skill-based technical change, for example, plays to the advantage of more skilled workers relative to less skilled ones, and capital-based technical change favors capital relative to labor. Both of those types of technical change have been important in the past, but increasingly, a third type — what we call superstar-based technical change which Singapore is trying to adopt — is upending the global economy.

I don’t think they are. Our government can create economic growth by paying workers to dig and re-fill holes in the ground or build bridges to nowhere, but that doesn’t make it efficient. If my memory serves me, in Arthur Okun’s “Equality and Efficiency: The Big Tradeoff” the author described the trade-off in terms independent of growth, suggesting that attempts to address the needs of the poor will inevitably result in wasteful spending. But — up to a point — this inefficiency was worth the result in reduced misery, a moral judgment. The realization that spending to reduce poverty also increases economic growth may shift that point but it doesn’t negate the logic of Okun’s trade-off.

There’s another big plus in leveling income distribution, and that has to do with the distribution of talent. The economic changes that have occurred since the period of the 1950s – 1970s that have had three bad impacts on our society. The first is the growing economic inequality that is well described. The second is the drastic decline in economic security for middle class. The third change is that our political system is far less responsive to the needs of average citizens.

Until we ensure that our state is secular with full recognition of what underlies our actions, we can not make conscious decisions and take concrete actions to ensure that all have equal opportunity and the ability to use the opportunity to better themselves and we as a society. No one should inherit their position in society, rather they should earn it.
