Millions ‘escaped’ from virus city prior to lock-down

Millions of residents had left virus city Wuhan prior to the complete lock down, according to local city officials.

The mayor of Wuhan, Zhou XianWang said on Sunday (26 Jan) that about 5 million residents – nearly half of the city’s 11 million population – had left before the lock-down was initiated as part of an emergency measures to try to contain the spread of the deadly virus.

Among the millions that have left, thousands had flown to Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore and Japan  – although the five most popular destinations of those leaving Wuhan were in neighbouring Henan province, reported China Business News (CBN).

The paper reported that Thailand was the most popular foreign destination for tourist from Wuhan between 30 December to 22 January, the day before the epicentre of the deadly Coronavirus outbreak was locked down.

Citing figures from Flight Master (a travel platform popular in China), CBN reported that during that period more than 11,000 tourists flew from Wuhan to Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport and another 9,000 to the Thai capital’s Don Mueang International Airport.

Singapore Changi Airport and Narita International Airport in Tokyo respectively received 10,680 and 9,080 passengers, while more than 7,000 flew to Hong Kong, the paper said.

It has been estimated that more than 7 million Chinese tourist are travelling all over the world during the Lunar New Year holiday season.

Meanwhile, the authorities in Singapore have setup a multi-ministry taskforce to combat the Coronavirus and any eventuality.

The taskforce has announed a host of new measures which include enhanced checks and screening and compulsory leave for people returning home from China, all of which are designed to combat the spread of the virus.

Singaporeans are also advised to avoid travelling to mainland China if it is not essential travel.

Effective Wednesday (29 Jan), passengers with Hubei passports will undergo checks, additional attention will be placed on flights from mainland China. and temperature screening will be done at airports for all incoming flights.

New measures will also be imposed on students and workers coming back from mainland China.

Individuals who have travelled to China in the last 14 days will have to undergo health monitoring with temperature checks twice a day for two weeks from their return as well as make declarations concerning their travel and health to their respective organisations.

Anyone with close contact with vulnerable populations, such as those in the eldercare, pre-schools and healthcare sectors, will have to take 14 days of compulsory leave of absence upon returning to Singapore.

To date, the Coronavirus has caused 81 deaths and infected about 2876 throughout the world. [ Latest Updates ]

  • Oh, get real man!:

That CCS already so quickly opened his mouth to warn that sg economy will suffer this year bcuz of the wuhan virus.
    Wow what a revelation!!!
Sg economy was already bad, n suffering even before this crisis.
Is the gov going to be blaming the virus for all the lousy job they had been doing all this while?
When something good happens, they take all the credit n pay themselves handsomely..
When something bad they blame outside forces..i think they might be solently thanking their lucky stars that they got something to blame on now.
ordinary sgs slog w/o minimum wage and stagnant salaries.
So what will the gov be doing to pull our country out of it?

  • Only 4 cases in SG?:

How many of the “escapees” have landed in SG over the past weeks? It would be impossible to track them down if they are dispersed into the population, staying in vaious hotels or with relatives, unless they come forward voluntarily to be tested. What if they are infected but show no symptoms, and travel about the island on buses and MRT? Malaysians who come in daily to work in SG, if infected, will spread it across the causeway. Like Wuhan, the virus spreads to the neighbouring cities. They had to lock it down and ban all public transportation from leaving and coming in.

Among the 81 deaths or any higher to add , only 1 is below 40.

A few above 40 and a few more above 50.

Majority range comes from above 60 to above 80.
So advise elderly to caution and carry out some of the measures to the best of their abilities e.g. mask and personal hygiene , wear specs ……

  • Harder Truths:

Some news on the virus. I have a bad feeling this virus is man-made. Too many ways this virus is behaving suggests a human agency behind it.

it is also very clear there was a cover up to stop attempts to isolate the virus in the wet market before the doctors and researchers arrived. The market was sterilised BEFORE the researchers could inspect it by the government. You know why.

    Quote

‘… compiled what follows from a Series of Thirteen Tweets by physician (MD) and scientist (PhD) Dr. Dena Grayson.

Dr. Dena Grayson: Having YEARS of experience developing an Ebola treatment, I was concerned about this Coronavirus Outbreak from the outset, because this coronavirus strain is very contagious, causes severe illness, and NO treatments or vaccines are available.

Unlike H5N1 “bird flu” (which does not spread easily between people) or SARS (which was spread by only a handful of “super spreaders”), this coronavirus DOES appear to spread easily between people, even after making the jump from an animal (this is not common).

In addition to being highly contagious, this novel coronavirus can cause a SEVERE infection that can kill even healthy people. It’s rare to see BOTH of these (bad) attributes in the same novel virus. Usually, it’s one or the other.

One way experts judge how deadly a pathogen (virus, bacteria, etc) is by the “case-fatality rate,” which is the # of deaths / # infected people. It’s WAY too early to know what this is, because it takes time for patients to succumb to the infection.

Thus far, the case-fatality rate appears to be ~4%…but its’ WAY too early to know what it really is, due to spotty reporting (both of deaths and cases), and because patients are still sick and could die tomorrow, next week, etc., even if no new infections occur.

“Early on, many of the patients in the outbreak in Wuhan, China reportedly had some link to a large seafood/animal market, suggesting animal-to-person spread.” Now, many newly diagnosed patients have NO connection to the market, supporting human-human spread = BAD

I get asked: “How will I know if I have the coronavirus?” Answer: it’s very hard to tell, because the symptoms are similar to having influenza — anywhere on the spectrum from a very bad cold to severe pneumonia with respiratory compromise.

Although there are no specific treatments (medicines to combat coronavirus) or vaccines, excellent supportive care, such as IV fluids, intubation (on a “breathing machine”), can help support patients while their immune system battles (and hopefully, defeats) the infection.

In an “outbreak,” local hospitals can get overwhelmed, and there aren’t enough hospital…

  • Only 5 cases?:

Some of those confirmed cases entered the country with their families. Imagine the multiplying effects if they are all infected and they go about infecting others with whom they come into close contact in public places. The govt should get all recent arrivals from China to come in voluntarily for blood test to get a more accurate figure and put a temporary ban on new arrivals.

if 70% sheep cannot buy in JB, they buy from us in ntuc ensuring us S$ to spend on ourselves. so why bother about virus spreading as long as us the pap S$m folks are safe with our S$m and are making more S$m. we the pap folks can always replace 70% sheep with aliens.

since when do we the pap folks have any difficulty bringing in aliens? as long as I the chief pap clown and my wife are in charge, continue as it is so that we can make more and more S$m.

this new crisis is without precedents ? SARs was different, it happened 2003 when sinkie land was not so open-leg ? now travelling is like taking taxi and the NOW a more populated sinkie land would pose greater logistics problem to qualify entry (e.g genuine business people and naturalized citizens) into the country, track and monitor (especially those coming from those difficult, very eloquent or aggressive people who may not want to waste time going through the ‘hassle’) ??

  • Only 7 cases?:

The cases overseas are isolated and few compared to China which has seen a rapid increase in number, but almost every one of them had been in Wuhan. ICA should be ablt to give an accurate number of how many from there entered SG during the past month to give an idea of our exposure. According to the Ministry, the risk of infections through transient contacts in public transportation is low. How can anyone be sure of that? in a jam-packed bus or train where commuters are squeezed together, one can almost feel the breath of the next person. You can hear coughs and sneezes and some do not even bother to cover their mouhs. How is the risk low?

All passengers, if you start cancelling your flights or don’t fly, then return tkt can’t be cleared for payment (that was the case b4), then airlines would be “motivated” to cancel flight to/from affected cities.

  • Sad:

Sad that those contracted recently will not display symptoms till the window period is up. By then the virus could be spread unknowingly & freely. Identifying the first wave of carriers only limit that batch of infected to quarantine, what about those unknowingly infected locally but are the asymptomatic ones.
