Minister Lawrence Wong clarifies ‘Quarantine Allowance’

National Developmen Minister Lawrence Wong has posted an update on his Facebook, clarifying that the $100 ’Quarantine Allowance’ announced earlier applies only to Singapore-based employers, Singaporeans and Permanent Residents and does not apply to foreigners.

The minister explained that the allowance was not a new practice but one which had also been carried out during the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreak in 2002-2003.

It is regrettable that some people are circulating falsehoods on this. Quarantine allowance is not new. We did it for SARS too. It’s given to Singapore-based employers to cover their employees under quarantine and to self-employed Singaporeans/PRs under quarantine. It’s not given to tourists who are quarantined. Our whole point is to help Singaporeans. Please help to share this and correct any misperceptions or falsehoods out there.

The government has earlier announced that it will provide financial assistance for those who are self-employed and salaried if they are forced to be quarantined under the Infectious Disease Act 1976, to ease their financial burden.

Those affected will receive $100 for each day they are quarantined with the money going to their employers if they are salaried or  paid to the individuals if they are self-employed.

The government will bear the associated medical costs in all suspected and confirmed cases.

Under the Infectious Disease Act of 1976, anyone who disregard quarantine directions may face a fine of up to $10,000 and/or jail time of up to 6 months.

  • Minister, POFMA Strait times:

This minister should just POFMA straits times.

    Here is ST headline:
Wuhan virus: $100 a day for those quarantined; severe penalties for people who flout quarantine orders

The headline is clearly misleading. Most quarantined will likely not get the $100 in their pocket.

A case of carry the ball wrongly?

When you say government pay – does it mean money from the taxpayers or from ministers accounts? Anyway it is still taxpayers money.
Government allow them in. But taxpayers pay.

  • Chance to raise GST to 20%:

Thinking long term, Singapore is likely to face this scenario.
Wuhan, with 11 million population, is lockdowned.

Singapore, with 10 million population, can face a lockdown situation in the near future. Deadly flu is a regular global occurrence. So how?

With $100 daily for these local 10 million, it’s going to need $1 billion every day. To be on the conservative side, this gov needs to establish a $100 billion flu-fund.

    Don’t wait. Plan long term.
Raise GST to 20%. 70% scared sheep will vote with both hands and legs.

    Gov huat hah.

  • Initial Message Was Not Clear:

Mr Wong should simply admit that his initial message was not clear instead of accusing others of spreading falsehood.

“SPREAD” and “FASLEHOOD”, what convenient and effective words use to smear anything you don’t like to hear!
There are people who are concern and the MSM headlines are brief and not helpful. People do not hear everything you said or announce in a press briefing correctly. They reacted according to their misinterpretation. There is no need to thump them down. Just correction to the misunderstanding with an announcement suffice.
But you can’t do that, correct? You must continue to emphasize “FASLEHOOD” because this is the way to curtail alternative voices. This is the way to brainwash the citizenry. Pathetic!
