Hundreds of medical workers in China infected by Covid-19

Hundreds of medical workers in China have been infected by the Covid-19 and at least 6 have died, according to health authorities and medical sources.

Most of the infected medical workers had contracted the virus through “cross infection”, which Zhang Ke, a doctor at Beijing’s Youan hospital, who specialises in communicable diseases, said were a serious concern, particularly as many hospital wards were not designed to handle communicable diseases.

Even in designated hospitals, receiving and treating patients was quite chaotic in Wuhan. Fever patients rushed to hospital and they hospitals became an incubator for the virus because their design is less scientific than that of the communicable disease hospitals.

And the number of infected is expected to rise to about 20%, Dr Zhang opined.

During the Sars outbreak in 2003, 18 per cent of mainland medical staff and 22 per cent of Hong Kong medical staff were infected. I estimate we will see 10-20 per cent of medical staff infected.

In Wuhan alone, the epicentre of the Covid-19 outbreak, at least 500 medical workers have been infected with the deadly virus since mid-January, with at least another 600 suspected cases, according to multiple medical sources and a slide (shown above) that has been circulating online.

A source from a major hospital in Wuhan with knowledge of the situation confirmed that the slide was authentic. The figures shown on the slide were also in line with the figures given by 2 other doctors from major hospitals in Wuhan. The figures are expected to be higher as the slide only reflects hospitals with 15 or more infected.

Those infected includes at least 100 staff from both Wuhan Xiehe Hospital and Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University, with a further 50 cases each from Wuhan Number 1 Hospital and Zhongnan Hospital.

Yu Changping, a respiratory specialist with the Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University, developed a fever on January 14 and was later confirmed to have contracted the virus.

Dr Yu said he was not sure when he became infected since he treated many patients every day and the chance of getting infected was high.

The virus is too contagious. We did not have enough understanding about the virus.

He was admitted to hospital on January 17 with another colleague from the same department and is still undergoing treatment.

Dr Mei Zhongming, Deputy director of the late Dr Li Wenliang’s department, whose case triggered national storm of outrage about initial attempts to cover up the outbreak, is also reportedly infected.

Ian Lipkin, John Snow professor of epidemiology at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University, said the risks faced by health care workers were high even with protective gear.

The reason for this is that physicians and health care workers have a very intimate relationship with their patients, and even with personal protective equipment, sometimes we use it late, sometimes we get exposed inadvertently, and the efforts we make to support them with fluids and such place us at extremely high risk.

In addition, those individuals who are working in hospital settings may be immunosuppressed because frankly they’re exhausted … the viral load that they receive may be larger.

The professor had visited China at the invitation of the government.

The Chinese authorities have since mobilised around 20,000 additional medical workers to treat patients in Wuhan and its neighbouring cities, and more protective gear has been sent to major hospitals in the Hubei province.

But frontline doctors warned that medical workers in other cities, especially those with less attention and supplies, faced a higher infection risk.

Infections among health care workers are now less serious than in January… The biggest concern is protective gear, but as long as there is gear, it is unlikely we will get infected.

The situation may be worse in other cities in Hubei province, one of the Wuhan doctors said, many medical workers in the neighbouring city of Ezhou had been infected.

To the South of Hubei province, on the island province of Hainan, the local health commission said a doctor and nurse had become infected after being exposed to a patient for 6 minutes even though they were wearing surgical masks.

At Beijing’s Fuxing hospital, 6 medical staff, 5 patients and 4 caretakers were infected by a single patient. The hospital’s president Li Dongxia had reportedly been sacked as a result.

Apart from hampering the capacity of hospitals to contain the outbreak and treat patients, medical specialists said the rate of infections among frontline medical workers was an important indicator of how easily the Covid-19, which has killed more than 1,017 people, could be transmitted and the risks of contracting the virus in hospital.

A doctor from a major hospital in Wuhan, who requested anonymity, said the development had hit morale, adding that many medical workers were “devastated” when they saw the CAT scans of colleagues who had been infected.

That is why we have been crying out for more donations of medical supplies, especially hazmat suits… We have seen too many colleagues falling ill because of insufficient protection.

Doctors and medical experts have said that a shortage of protective gear, prolong working hours as well as lack of awareness about how contagious the virus was, had been major factors in the large number of infections among medical workers.

However, the shortage situation is expected to improve with the resumption in production of major factories in China as the extended Lunar New Year holiday for workers outside Hubei province comes to an end.

Meanwhile, the provincial government of Hubei have tentatively extended the lock-down status for all cities in the province to Sunday (16 Feb).

What is a cross infection?

A cross infection is the transfer of harmful microorganisms, usually bacteria and viruses. The spread of infections can occur between people, pieces of equipment, or within the body.

aiyoh ? sinkie land white tua-liat hoots should quickly take this as a lesson from real cases in CN ?

first, virus attack the common people and then the virus attack the most competent people & professionals trained to protect the sick ? it is the natural strategy of the virus (like any other virus) to prolong its infection and its stay to as many people as possible (hopefully to create enough damage to the human host body but not enough to kill of the hosts except the very weak – killing the hosts mean killing itself) ?

In any society, there are good, bad and ugly people, but let’s not condemn them to this extent.

So pitiful for these healthcare workers. They are saints and heroes.

I feel the china gov should start building more specialist hospitals all around the country, and train thousands more nurses & doctors, since its their country which is most prone to these kinds of erupting viruses so frequently.

China isnt a poor country anymore..the gov can well afford to do this. They owe it to their citozens as well as the world.

    This is a global catastrophe.

No use blaming the medical team leaders etc..they take instructions from whom?

in life, there are good people, and there are bad people.

there are also the ownself pay ownself S$m dishonest people.

but what you have described is unlikely in China, since even their bad people are not as bad as the pap folks we have in Singapore who lie about INDIAN is malay, who lie about INSIDE 200m is not within 200m, who fixed WP town councilors swee swee via abuse of power, and who silence truth via contempt of court law and POFMA.

as Singaporeans, we say, what you have described can happen in pap Singapore but unlikely in China since China’s bad is far better people than our pap people who are not only bad hats but 100% money faced S$m obsessed S4m stealing liars.

just listen to their lies, no need wear mask unless kenna because the stockpile is sufficient.

in one sentence the pap liars tell so many lies. such people can do the things you have described. but not the China people, they are made of better mettle.

  • REGIME CHANGE is the solution:

The incubation period is up to 24 days. An infected person can have no symptoms and spreading the virus. Do you still believe PAP that you should only wear a mask only if you are sick? You might die and not be around to celebrate REGIME CHANGE. Think about it.

  • REGIME CHANGE is the solution:

Straits Times: Coronavirus: Why Hong Kong doesn’t have far more confirmed cases than Singapore

Why? Because Hongkieshave been wearing a mask for months when they protest. It is stupid to believe PAP to wear a mask only when you are sick because it assumes ALL those who are sick re wearing one. Also, a person can be infected and spreading the virus BEFORE showing symptoms.

You cannot give PAP payback by voting for REGIME CHANGE if you are dead. This is another compelling reason to wear a mask.

if so, then logically confirmed cases will be = death tolls ? that means this virus is not “lethal” enough at this current moment OR it may be probing for some good host for it to mutate into a stronger strain to do further damage (to do the ultimate damage by wiping out humanity as you have alluded) ??

You don’t know me and I don’t know you. You may disagree with my opinion, we can debate on that issue but resorting to passing judgment about my personality, family teaching, professional experience and calling me names like ‘Banana’ is totally unnecessary.

If you are a grown-up and a reasonable/objective person, let’s just keep the blog discussion thread focus on the subject/topic without resorting to personal attacks.

As I have said I love Chinese/Culture. (China should not be CCP. just as Singapore should not be PAP). The numbers of (deaths/cases) posted by CCP may not be accurate – most likely many times lower than the actual numbers. Without transparency, accountability, while married with oppression and suppression and cover ups, there will never be a truly healthy progressive society or nation.

  • @Dr Chan

    I absolutely agree.

When the virus broke, medical facilities were inadequate and many sick died at home, on the streets and even in hospitals before they had a chance to be diagnosed as infected.

These deaths are not included in the national tally. Its no secret in China and everyone knows it.

The tally is more accurate now as various measures have been implemented to examine residents throughout Wuhan and admit all sick residents asap.

Now medical beds are no longer short, except medical masks and suits remain inadequate in some cities in Hubei province.

Today on CCTV, some officials said that the current crisis is consuming 94% of masks and suits which China produces on a daily basis. As more workers return to work, the supply is expected to increase and residents would then be able to get their hands on much needed masks, which are currently completely out of stock and have been hoarded by local authorities for medical usage only.

高手一出手,就知有没有。you are simply employing western mindset and methods to dissect and opin on non-western stuff. you alluded to tcm but the most basic principle of tcm cannot be smelled from your “dissertation”.

dynasties come and go, some lasting 800 years, 600, 200, … the shortest reign is by the first emperor 秦, survived less than 14 years. surprisingly, ccp is still in existence, at least by name. all these including ccp have never departed from 宗。 they are rulers, rules not based on air but on some chinese philosophies, using one or the other, or a combination. whether one appreciates or not, embraces or abhors, it is still chinese-based. banana thinking or western mindset is not historically 诸子百家 evolved from 上古,中古,近古。any undesirable outcome is unfortunate due human and non-human factors.
