Wuhan re-quarantines discharged Covid-19 patients

Authorities in virus city Wuhan have ordered the compulsory quarantine of all Covid-19 patients who were discharged from hospitals, after some of them were again tested positive for the SARS-Cov-2 virus.

Effective Saturday (22 Feb), all patients who had recovered and been discharged have to be sent to designated places for 2 weeks of quarantine and medical observation, the city’s coronavirus treatment and control command centre announced.

The new quarantine arrangements came after Chinese medical experts on the front line of the outbreak warned that recovered patients may still carry the virus and remain contagious.

Dr Zhao Jianping, who heads a team working in Hubei, was quoted by Southern People Weekly magazine on Thursday (20 Feb) as saying that there had been cases in which patients tested positive after they had seemingly recovered.

This is dangerous… where do you put those patients? You cannot send them home, because they might infect others, but you cannot put them in hospital because resources are stretched.

In a separate interview with The Beijing News on Wednesday (19 Feb), Dr Zhao said one of his patients had been discharged from hospital after two laboratory tests proved negative. But several days later the patient came down with a fever, and this time tested positive again.

He said the case suggested that recovered patients should quarantine themselves at home for 14 days after being discharged.

Chinese experts have previously warned that recovered patients can become infected a second time, and it was not clear whether this had been the case with Dr Zhao’s patient.

In the southwestern city of Chengdu, a patient initially discharged on February 10, after meeting the standard for having recovered, was readmitted to hospital 9 days later when he tested positive again during a check-up.

In another case in Changde, a city in Hunan province, a woman tested positive on February 9, barely 5 days after she was released from quarantine at a local hospital having tested negative in two previous laboratory tests.

Questions have also been raised about the reliability of the nucleic acid tests used to confirm the presence of the virus.

Wang Chen, president of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, told state broadcaster CCTV early this month that the tests only had an accuracy rate of 30 to 50 per cent. As the test involves a number of steps, any mistakes in the process may affect the outcome.

Over to the South of Wuhan, in the city of Guangzhou, the virus was found in stool and urine samples from a small number of discharged patients, South Metropolitan Daily reported on Saturday (22 Feb).

Dr Cai Weiping, head of the infectious diseases department at Guangzhou No 8 Hospital, was quoted as saying:

It may be that there are still viruses or viral gene fragments in the discharged patients. It is not yet certain whether they are infectious. This is a new pathogen, and we don’t yet have a perfect process to understand it.

But examples of this could not be classed as relapses, Cai added, since CAT scans showed that the discharged patients’ lung inflammation was receding.

For a patient to be discharged, he/she has to meet all 4 criteria:

  1. body temperature returning to normal for more than three days
  2. respiratory symptoms improving significantly
  3. chest CAT imaging showing significant improvement in the lungs
  4. negative results in two nucleic acid tests at least one day apart.

Meanwhile, China has reported a total of 77274 confirmed cases with 2596 death. Of the 25034 that were discharged from hospitals, 16764 were in Wuhan.

  • It has been confirmed that many (500+ in Wuhan alone) who tested positive have shown no symptoms at all and some have tested negative only to be tested positive again in future tests.

This is a very sneaky and dangerous virus, I doubt it can be “cleaned” so easilly.

Look at Italy: Italians are emptying their supermarkets.

People are being very prudent and planning long term. Definitely not idiotic or whatever. Ministers who are not prudent or never plan long term put the country in short supply of masks.

  • Only 90 cases?:

There could be others out there who have been tested negative but remain infected with the virus and not wearing a mask. They will be infecting other unsuspecting individuals just like what we see in zombie movies. This looks like a “smart” virus that can evade detection and shows up again.

  • @Only 90 cases?

This is possible. There are confirmed cases of people having tested negative multiple times only to show symptoms later.

Onboard Diamond Princess, about 80% of those who tested positive have no symptoms at all and if the authorities had depended only on symptoms or temp screening and let them go into Japan, the damage would be huge.

It is an admitted fact in China that temp screening can only identify those who have already developed symptoms and ineffective again those who are asymptomatic. Even the acid test is inconclusive and only 30-50% correct..

Just look at the rate that it is spreading in South Korea, most of them have no symptoms at all.

This is a bloody scary virus, make no mistake.

Capital of South Korea has hundreds of thousands of PRC selling beauty products to food and almost everything.

Why the SK gov did not stop them from entering after the lunar new year, i don’t know.

But we have 30,000 PRC coming back after CNY.

Only few were stop from entering or BANNED.
CRISIS here will start next 2 weeks after these 30,000 had gone back to work.

    Mark my word.

Discharged but later tested positive again?

This could be that the patients were discharged prematurely.

So far, those treated and discharged from Sinkiland Hospitals remain well and fine. The discharge criteria adopted by the two places could be different.

  • The NHC has ordered a much harsher and dictatorial lockdown of all cities, counties and districts in Hubei, mandating all living things to remain at home and only at home, DESPITE the fact that the virus toll has dropped SIGNIFICANTLY.

Common sense would dictate that conditions improve then lock down should be eased, but that was not the case.

Do they know something that lesser mortals are not aware of? Say the virus now maybe confirmed being airborne?
