All our community efforts will come to nought if the authorities shy away from patching this obvious leak resolutely

I agree that to effectively arrest the local transmission of Covid-19 which has become the main mode of transmission, restricting the gatherings and/or the movements of people is key.

Although I commend all the new measures announced by the taskforce, one critical piece is missing and that piece is the effective and firm enforcement efforts together with punitive punishments for people who fail to comply.

The government is only appealing to the good sense, co-operation, understanding and community spirit of Singaporeans to come together in doing everybody’s part in our collective fight against this invisible enemy, however, I know deep in my heart that there will be many recalcitrant and couldn’t be bothered people who will continue to gather in coffee shops, hawker centres, HDB void decks or open spaces etc to drink beer and/or tell grandmother stories and especially so in places like HDB rental estates where many seniors and malay families stay.

The success or failure of our further tightening measures hinges, to a large extend, on the firm and no-nonsense enforcement efforts and their corresponding punishments of inconsiderate and indifferent violators.

Regarding this aspect, the taskforce has failed miserably. If I were in charge, I will not only step-up enforcement efforts appreciably, I will also encourage members of the public to take pictures of such people to serve as evidences later on and call the police.

It gives me no pleasure to strongly advocate firm punishments for such people, humiliate and publicise them loudly in order to serve as a warning to the rest of society and if the government is truly serious about putting a break on the community spread of Covid-19, then tackling this giant leak must be a top priority which every pap ministers in the taskforce either “genuinely overlooked” or conveniently looked the other way. Either way, that was clear incompetence on full display at yesterday’s ministerial press conference.

All our community efforts will come to nought if the authorities shy away from patching this obvious leak resolutely. Never forget that we are only as strong as our weakest link. Benjamin Franklin taught the world too that a small leak will sink a great ship. Think.

  • Do more:

    Need to do more.
All need to do our part.Compliance is important to reduce the spread.
Better to act on the weakest link.Stop all the nonsense.
We need to be serious. This virus kills.
By the way ,wearing of the Surgical masks may help.
Seem so in Taiwan.Better safe than sorry.

Simon Lim, you are too good to be true. The taskforce has failed miserably, introduces new measures and the next thing you come out immediately from your genius mind is to terrorise ignorant people (encourage members of the public to take pictures of such people to serve as evidences later on and call the police) with wild assumption. Simon Lim, you’re a nutcase, an unelectable simpleton!.

I blame all this squarely on the people in charge. Instead of taking early preventive measures they prioritize the economy over the well being and health of the citizens. The Wuhan virus is asymptomatic and was known at early stage but the people in charge discourage people to put on mask. Now they are saying putting on mask is “not discouraged”. In spite of knowing that wearing mask is important they refuse to admit what they had advised earlier was wrong and gave excuses about changing circumstances and blaming WHO. Instead of taking preventive measures at the early stages they waited to let things escalate then took measures. All is too late. All these drastic measures could have been avoided if all had worn mask at the early stage and if our borders are sealed.

It is too late for what-ifs and maybes. You are not in charge, and the CoV will continue to grow and feast on the stupid Sinkies.

I have been warning a long time something lik this could happen – this is why we need real leaders. The people are willing to take this risk to make a few bucks here and there. Now they have to pay the price of being wrong – or stupid.

Life does not ultimately reward the stupid or greedy. But the cunning will somehow survive.

They lack every bit of statesmanship, empathy and truthfulness. Yet those dedicated followers are full of adulation for them. What do you think? Should we just “take pictures of such people to serve as evidences later on and call the police?” I want to live in a nation where people sing and play music, make art for the joy of it and aren’t afraid to say hello and express a need to have a friend. A better place, then I would agree with Simon.

I am hoping that this very dire situation, one that is bound to get much worse before it gets any better, will shake something lose in our souls and make us re-examine who and what we are as a people. Even the most thick headed person looks at the contradictory verbiage emanating from every direction and concludes that our country is in the hands of a confederacy of klutzes. Our government will do what it does, and where it falls short the virus will correct us.

Over the past few weeks I’ve been bingeing on commentary from people predicting how bad it’s going to be. We all know how inefficient and trite our government can be under the best of circumstances. Nothing new, just seeing it on a grand scale. Actually, I’d say the Corona pandemic had proved once again that “the Establishment” is undeserving of power and incapable of competent leadership. Not trying to be too negative here, but the photo of health minister and his smugly grinning face should be added to the pantheon of characters which seems like a lot of crocodile sympathy coming from a major mouthpiece for the “you’re on your own” view of government.

The best Simon could do under the circumstances…
Either get the virus and die; or get the virus and not die; or not get the virus and die; or not get the virus and not die. One of these things will occur at some point in time.

    Agree with the writer.
Main worry is that all the time, efforts & resources will be truly wasted if there’re insufficient enforcements on those locals & large no. of foreign workers, who maintain the heck care…cant be bothered… with social distancing attitude

Look around, there’r still people who juz refuse to follow or comply to practice social distancing.

Wearing a mask & washing hands dont mean you’ll be immune to covid-19.
Social distancing is also an important factor too.

I like your last paragraph most. Simon with or without getting covid-19 has the symptom of virus-like in his mouth & brain. May we hear the last of Simon.

  • Wrong not to wear mask:

We should have insisted that everybody wears a mask when they go out- right from the very start !! Taiwan and HK did it, and see how their infection is so low compared to ours ? We laughed at Carrie Lam when she showed up for press conference with mask. Now it’s her turn to laugh at us. Because it clear goofed big time!!

  • Salesgirls'll Not Be Infected:

If only the govt had insisted the wearing of masks earlier, the two salesgirls at the shop in Jalan Besar attending to the China tourists would not have been infected with the Covid 19.

This is how the govt screwed locals.

Simon..it is Bloody Racist of you when u mentioned ‘HDB void decks or open spaces etc to drink beer and/or tell grandmother stories and especially so in places like HDB rental estates where many seniors and malay families stay.’

Do u really have to use the words ‘MALAY family stay’??

Why don’t u include the word CHINESE in the statement ‘drink beer’?

So please do us a favour , No need to mentioned any RACE in your writeup. Just say generally Singaporeans will do.
