An Open Letter to the Singapore Government and to Fellow Singaporeans

The current lockdown created a lot of stress and unhappiness to many Singaporeans. The incomes of many people were affected during this period of time. To make things worse, people may get fined for not wearing a mask or for being too close to each other in public places. [LINK]

The rules are so Draconian that even a Safe-Distancing Ambassador was fined for not wearing a mask. [LINK]

As a result, some people were unable to cope with the stress and vented their frustrations in different ways.

LINK 1

LINK 2

There are a few points I want to highlight here.

1. To Fellow Singaporeans

First, all of us are fellow Singaporeans.

Since our schooldays, we have been singing and portraying that we will stand united together as one. In times like these, we need to help one another to overcome these adversaries.

But what sort of behaviour are we exhibiting if we need to get each other for the slightest mistakes?

Take the following Malay man, for example.

LINK 1

He was just going downstairs to get a carton of soy milk and forgot about wearing his mask. (After all, it was not so long ago that the government advised that all healthy people need not wear masks.)

Take a step back and look at it. It was not really a big deal. His forgetfulness is not criminal and it was not as if he was trying to infect everybody with Covid-19 virus.

A good fellow Singaporean would just step up to offer him a mask, or maybe cautioned him to be more careful next time. Why would we need to video film him to record for evidences that he did not wear a mask? To ensure that he would be fined $300? Is that what we stand for as Singaporeans helping and caring for one another?

Of course, he would naturally be upset. I personally do not believe he is a racist. He simply lost his cool at that moment.

Going forward, I would make an appeal to all of us fellow Singaporeans.

If you have the means, bring along a few extra masks when you leave the house and offer to another fellow Singaporean who happened to forget to wear a mask. Don’t aggravate the situation to video record him.

That is what uniting together, standing together as one and helping each other really means. This is what a gracious society should be like. We kept on humming Singapore United. Now is the time to show how we will take care and help one another.

2. To the Singapore Government

The entire purpose of the lockdown is to stem the tide of the Covid-19 infections. But this can be done by proper education and grace, not by force and punishments.

By and large, Singaporeans are rational and can be trusted to behave in a proper and responsible manner. Yes, people sometimes forget to wear masks and sometimes get too close to each other. But that is not to say that they are deliberating trying to flout the rules to endanger everybody else.

Instead of getting police and enforcement officers to go around issuing fines to anybody who was not wearing a mask, a better alternative is to get more Social-Distancing Ambassadors to offer free masks to those who forget them and to gently remind people to stay further apart when they get too close to each other. This will get the same effects with a happier and more gracious Singapore.

We also need take into consideration that many people have lost their incomes and are facing hardship during this period of time. The government is aware of this and has numerous schemes to help individuals tide over this period. However, threatening and stressing Singaporeans with more fines and arrests only add to the general unhappiness of an already stressed out community.

Take for example, this man who threw items from HDB block. [LINK]

Of course, his actions were wrong and people may get injured. But the root problem is that his stress level was so high that it has pushed him to the brink of insanity. What he really needs is more assistance to help him tide over this period, not more fines or jail time.

I also appealed to the Singapore Government to reveal the cases of the Social-Distance Ambassador, the Malay man the Chinese man and perhaps give all of them a chance.

Finally, I will like the Singapore Government to consider relaxing some of the lockdown measures.

On the surface, the number of infections has soared considerably. In actuality, the number of local population infections has stabilised. Over the past one week, the highest number of local population infection is 48. The rest of the new cases are from foreign workers living in cramped dormitories.

What this means is actually very simple. The increased lockdown measures do not serve much purpose for the simple reason that the infections are NOT occurring in the general public to begin with. Yes, of course, we still need to take precautionary measures and we cannot afford to throw all caution to the wind. However, the earlier measures (prior to the lockdown) were effective enough to curb the spread of local infections. If a person has an injury on the hand, applying more medication on the foot does not help.

The reason for the current high number of infections is the cramped and unhygienic living conditions of the foreign workers dormitories. Curbing the high number of infections requires focused containment of the cross-infections among the foreign workers. This includes, amongst other things, the need to ensure that their living conditions met basic hygienic standards, the dormitories are well-cleaned and well-ventilated, the foreign workers have sufficient personal spaces within the dormitories so as not to be easily cross-infected, etc.

For the general public, relaxing the lockdown measures to the conditions just prior to the lockdown, with the wearing of masks, should not increase the risk of infections. This is not an empty guesswork. As all Singaporeans can observe, the number of local infections has already been tamed and is well under control.

Easing the lockdown measures will help the country. Small shops and businesses will be able to generate some income and this, in turn, will help to remove the stress among Singaporeans. If these harsh lockdown measures are not removed, many small shops and businesses will be bankrupted by the time the lockdown period is over. This will create another massive social problem in Singapore.

To be very clear, I am not advocating that all lockdown measures be removed. Singapore definitely needs sufficient and effective measures to stem the spread of Covid-19, but not so harsh to inflict numerous and multiple hardships onto the citizens that do not give any obvious incremental benefits. Empirical evidences have shown that the pre-lockdown social-distancing measures have shown to be effective in controlling the spread of Covid-19. As such, the additional requirement of wearing masks on top of the pre-lockdown social-distancing measures should be more than sufficient to stem the tide of the Covid-19 infections without crippling the likelihoods of fellow Singaporeans.

In conclusion, one needs to understand the root cause of a problem in order to properly address the issue. Putting a blanket solution that does not target the root cause does not solve the problem. In the past, the Singapore Government threw all caution to the wind when the Singapore Government openly advised people not to wear masks unless they are sick. Now, the Singapore Government imposes severe and harsh lockdown measures on the general public even though the main infections are occurring in the foreign workers’ dormitories. Both extremes are neither healthy nor effective in dealing with the Covid-19 situation.

There should be a phase in period e.g. at least 3 days or 5 before certain shops close ( barber shops , bubble tea shops , …. ). Too sudden , now i want to cut hair also cannot. Nabay.

If we observed carefully all our ministers and MPs appear on tv , their hair are all nicely trimmed or managed. Do they have personal hairdressers cater to them or before announcement already cut. At least have a few ministers hair messy appear on TV. More convincing.

The help is too little for them to survive in this very hard times.
I suggest that Government support them 50% of their last pay from Jan 2020 for 6 months. This will relief the stress on their family.
Alternative is to allowed them to withdraw from their CPF.

The Gahmen and media has been focusing on confirmed cases in the dormitories and very little attention paid to the local populace. Everyone is raving about the decline in local cases but I am not so sure if we are just seeing the tip of the iceberg.

How many locals have been tested and I keep asking this same question again and again. If you don’t test, you wouldn’t know the full extent of infections among the locals. If Singapore wants to get on top of Covid-19, the Gahmen will have not choice but to test, test, test everyone and not just focus on those in the dormitories.

Until now, it has been less than 4 months, but it had already spread to more than 200 countries and territories across the world.

If those badly affected countries knew that is going to be so devastating, so rapid, many would have prepared.
They wouldn’t be desperately trying to secure for face masks and ventilators, build temporary hospitals, and worse still, damaging the global economies.

SINGAPORE – Consumer goods giant Procter & Gamble (P&G) is donating 300,000 care packs worth about $5 million to migrant workers as part of relief efforts during the coronavirus crisis.

The multinational company, which has brands such as Gillette, Oral-B and SK-II in its portfolio, is working with the Ministry of Manpower, the South West Community Development Council and Migrant Workers’ Centre to carry out the initiative…..

The packs will include essential personal health and hygiene items, such as toothbrushes, razors and shampoo.

The company will also provide household cleaning products to 43 purpose-built facilities and more than 1,000 factory-converted dormitories to help ensure a clean and safe environment for the migrant workers.

The packs were assembled by volunteers from the company, together with Manpower Minister Josephine Teo, Ms Low Yen Ling, the Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Manpower and Mayor of South West District, and Migrant Workers’ Centre chairman Yeo Guat Kwang.

The packs will be distributed through the Migrant Workers’ Centre in coming weeks… “Unquote.

Response :” … donates 300,000 care packs worth $5 million to migrant workers here”??? Just wonder if donation is really a “dirty” word here? Obviously, I am not in any way saying that there is “no donations” from Procter & Gamble here. I am just wondering – is there any possibility of future grants or benefits from the government side using public funds to offset such donations in a round about ways ? If like that got future grants, tax rebates, manpower incentives, potential future massive purchase of X & X products return for usage such as hospital, for certain company that donates, then it is a win-win sort of thing, right/possible ? Would any one who wants to donate his money/other good items need to sit with those e*** Minister Josephine Teo Li Min or e*** Low Yen Ling? My doubt is that who is really the real contributor to those goods to migrant workers? Is there any public funds used in a round about way of donations? Are “volunteers” from those evil women wing really free without being paid in a round about way too? Every body needs to earn a living. Are there really “free’ volunteers as everytime we read news on?

    Celest Lee,

While I empathise with yours and all our situations, to be “fair” there are many countries that have turn to draconian measures to drive home the seriousness of Covid-19. I’m not particularly fond of P*P but in certain situations we need to be fair in our assessment of how our govt is responding to situations.

Perhaps, more Singaporeans should read what is happening in other countries. To get a better picture, you must read about the topic everyday if you are following what a particular country is doing. Random style of reading, missing news on some days will not give you or anyone a reasonable amount of understanding. We can get at least 80% picture of how other countries are managing, what draconian measures they are taking, tons of real videos out there showing the measures taken.

So get informed, stay informed so that we can be fair in our opinion. Where appropriate and when appropriate, unfortunately, draconian measures should be taken.

I suggest you go and be the “good fellow Singaporean” and offer everyone a mask who forget to bring one. They will then develop the habit of going out without a mask because “some good fellow Singaporeans” will be there to give away mask, and when you run out of mask, and the enforcement officer confront them for not wearing one, they will turn around and said “You all are supposed to provide masks to people who forget waht!”. It will come a situation where it becomes your duty to provide mask and when you have no more masks, you owe it to them to provide them.

Count yourself lucky that we are not in Malaysia where the lockdown is more strict, and in India, they even use a cane to whack people who refused to listen.

It requires the participation of ALL PEASANTS – hopefully the voices of intelligent ones beyond the sheepish lot listening to this dumb advice of wear masks only if you are infected.

The Covid-19 pandemic spread sent the world’s progress backward by at least a decade of prior economic gain. A lot of businesses won’t come back – convention centre is obvious example – unless a vaccine is discovered.

THAT MEANS CV FIGHT REQUIRES A WHOLE-OF-A-NATION EFFORT. We have to change the way we live, the politics, the economy and capitalism won’t be the same anymore anywhere.

In LEEjiapore, the old ways of doing things must change too

    - crony capitalism must go and so is crony appointments to key public institutions – we needs a public service to tell whichever incumbent govts as facts as it is, not what is political palatable so that real outcomes for the nation is achieved.

    - CPF in its frozen form now must go,retirees and peasants without jobs needs to survive and the performance of SWF MUST ACHIEVE the financial outcome and contribute to national welfare budget OR ELSE replaced.

    - GLCs must perform or sold off and the money returned to stakeholders i.e. CPF contributors.

    - the political space and media must be opened up – the best of best be given equal space to compete and lead the nation forward.

Reported on Straits Times website :Quote – “BEIJING (AFP) – China has confiscated over 89 million poor quality face masks, a government official said Sunday (April 26), as Beijing faces a slew of complaints about faulty protective gear exported worldwide.

Demand for protective equipment has soared as nations across the globe battle the deadly coronavirus, which has infected nearly 2.9 million people.

But a number of countries have complained about faulty masks and other products exported by China, mostly for use by medical workers and vulnerable groups.

As of Friday, China’s market regulators had inspected nearly 16 million businesses and seized over 89 million masks and 418,000 pieces of protective gear, said Ms Gan Lin, deputy director of the State Administration of Market Regulation, at a press conference.

Regulators had also seized ineffective disinfectants worth over 7.6 million yuan (S$1.53 million), she said.

It is unclear how much of the confiscated goods were destined for markets abroad.

In a bid to eliminate poor-quality products, China released new rules Saturday saying even non-medical masks must meet both national and international quality standards…. “Unquote.

And no report on media to show that all those who ship illegal cigarette to Singapore and got cargo cigarette confiscated, then got charged and jail by law. So what happen to all those confiscated illegal cigarettes? Did government civil servants sell those illegal cigarette behind the scene and pocket all those illegal cigarettes sales behind? Why don’t Kasisviswanathan answer out to the whereabout of illegal confiscated cigarettes out to public? Burnt or whatever (do backup with video proof providing date and time). And what happen to all those caught transporting illegal cigarettes to Singapore do far (do backup with judge sentence, name and photo of all of them). If not, then the opposition should ask Kasisviswanathan to answer out and prove the answer out during general election time!!!! Law by Law, right? Can’t be caught and confiscated already also no need to report what happened subsequently? Happen already for do many years already.

@zhenzidan-Quote – ““Take the following Malay man, for example.

LINK 1He was just going downstairs to get a carton of soy milk and forgot about wearing his mask.

Is that what we stand for as Singaporeans helping and caring for one another?””Unquote.

Response : Video film him??? Maybe be another story come from Stomp website? A lot of story from Stomp website is pure acting and most likely fake. This Malay man is most likely to be a paid actor and most likely paid more than $300 by those evil PAP women wing because the fine amount is $300.So if he got $800 (artificial figure) at the end of the show, he would have earn $500 extra after happily paying off the $300 fine. So this event most likely happen some days back and till now that all of you didn’t hear any more uproar by this Malay man,and it is most likely fake acting video recorded, right? If really this case is real and that Malay man really come up with $300 from his own pocket, how can there not be continuous uproar from him? Just need to fake one incident to those top evil women heads and kick-start the fine process of $300 for it to smoothly start going, so easily get in free fined money!!!! It is only after General Election most likely take place in June or July and after PAP won majority, then such $300 fine will be implemented widely on a large scale basis. So after June/July, it will definitely be serious for that $300 fine out of anybody’s pocket and that will be real then! When such “trickery” method has been tried too many times, everyone will knows the evil PAP women wing tricks ! So I assume that Malay man name and photo wasn’t reported out? Ask why wasn’t it reported out. Obviously, so that people who read the news cannot contact him to verify the incident is one reason why news story cannot report name and photo. Fooled off everyone!!!!

Reported on the independent.sg website :Quote – “Singapore – Video footage of a woman going door-to-door giving out packs of face masks with messages from MP Sun Xueling is circulating online, leading to claims of campaigning activity during the extended circuit breaker to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

It is not known if Ms Sun authorised the distribution.

On Thursday (April 23), Punggol West resident James Ng took to Facebook to share what happened at his front door the previous night. “A lady came to my gate with my wooden door opened. She passed a zip-lock bag containing three surgical masks through the gate.” His four-year-old child accepted the pack.

It is not known who handed out the masks but there were notes pasted on both sides of each pack. The note on the back read “These masks were donated to Punggol West”, while that on the front read “Stay Safe, Stay Healthy. Ms Sun Xueling, MP for Punggol West.”…. “Unquote.

Response : Even though the label on the mask has highlighted the words “Sun Xue Ling”, it us inconclusive whether she is that sponsor as the distributor is another person. All of us has to personally collect our mask from the town council or cc. So why now can distribute mask to doorstep? It is very clear that June or July may most likely be erection time for Sun Xue Ling.

Up to last night (26 Apr 2020) the Covid-19 ‘Education-Video’ still shows an Elderly woman going over to her neighbour’s flat to offer some food. She did NOT Wear A MASK when the Rule now is Wear a Mask WHEN you leave your HOME.
This is certainly giving a Confusing Message. Masking-Up has already started weeks ago and still they have not updated the Video. Who should be blamed for the Not-Masking problem?

Nowadays uob has launched a chat system think known as “Uob digital assistant” where an automated system assist to help you. You have to get into their Web page, key in a security code, press certain button and key in your account number. However their system expect you to key in your account number in an extremely short time target and the problem that this time allowed is too short to check over what you key in as your account number. Go and ask Uob what if a person mistakenly key in a wrong account number accidentally and no time to check and press “submitted”, then will it become an offence against the law?
Uob should provide a more reasonable longer time for people to check over and for other slower people to key in too, is that what it should do? Wonder with this new automated chat system from Uob, are there still operators handling the line to assist customers who may have difficulty?

YOU STILL HALLUCINATING IN ALICE-WONDERLAND-AMUSEMENT PARK wanting to shut down 20/20 arm chair critics?

It starts with PAST TENSE, who in 2010 warned us this – we grew the last 5 years solely by importing foreign labor. On may day speech 2020, PRESENT TENSE TOLD US there will be major STRUCTURAL CHANGE of our economy post CV-19.

for GOODNESS SAKE, we should have restructured our economy since 2005 – THAT IS 15 YEARS AGO!!

INSTEAD WE GOT THE POPULATION WHITE PAPER RAMMED DOWN OUR THROAT post 2011 GE/Punggol by-election.

Covid-19 proved that 5.8 million is UNSUSTAINABLE OF CRISIS MANAGEMENT. still waiting for 6.9 million or maybe no less than 10 million soon?

I Love TR Emeritus!: Can’t wait for GE and be grateful that PAP will Singapore for the next 5 years and shut all of you hind sight 20/20 arm chair critics for the next 4-5 years!

    </blockquote

Instead of restructuring our economy in 2005, WE WASTED 15 YEARS forging an
asset bubble economy including Changi jewel in a sea of property speculation.

MAS is right of its property cooling curbs in 2013 – it is unsustainable. THOSE WHO BOUGHT OR CHASE PROPERTY IN THE LAST 7 YEARS WILL SEE one of these outcome

    - if fully paid in cash and cpf will see meltdown in values, no more buyers around in a restructured broken economy

    - if heavily in mortgage, wait for your retrenchment in economic restructuring and bankruptcy.

ALL CPF MONEY PUT INTO PROPERTY GONE FOR GOOD.

YOU CAN START SHUTTING DOWN ARMCHAIR CRITICS ON 20/20 HINDSIGHT RIGHT FROM THIS MOMENT.

THE POPULATION WHITE PAPER is the proverbial flower-laden pathway to economic cremation. A lot of PAPpypolitics/PAPpynomics diehards simply sucked in the hype of property trajectory (Divine-blessed???) to heavenly wealth waiting for foreigners to flood in to take their property gamble at ungodly overpriced valuations.

Well, this mob is now either

    - nailed in their dreamland golden coffin

    - walking dead

    - lost zombie living in daily fear of the banker’s call or SMS invite to “discuss” forward plans.

for them, it is the reality moment of collective stupidity reflection and sharing of misery INSTEAD OF LISTENING TO DISSENTING VOICES in the social media.

I HAVEN’T CHECK BUT I SUSPECT A LOT OF PRO-PAPpy die hard fb and weblog pages have gone eerie silent.

EVEN PAPpy (UN)natural aristocrats in the poliitical apex HAVE GONE MUTE on the economy – they know now how badly wrong of their behavior in that POPULATION WHITE PAPER throat-ramming -each reinforcing the stupidity of others in BLIND TO REALITY tribal politics RITUAL.
