What’s wrong with giving the government a second chance?

There are middle ground Singaporeans who say that while there is no doubt that the government has dropped the ball in the COVID-19 pandemic, it should not be held to account while the crisis is ongoing.

Their reasoning goes something like this: Let the ministers rectify their mistakes, give them a chance to get it right, no point asking for an apology because it wouldn’t solve anything.

That is not entirely unreasonable.

It is about giving the government a second chance. Just move on. No admission of mistakes necessary, no apologies needed.

But the problem with that argument is that we are so used to a government that has for decades been adopting the opposite stance – a take no prisoners style to governing and ruling the nation.

Has the government been giving a second chance to the people, the critics and the opposition?

All three Prime Ministers of our country have carried on the tradition of taking citizens to court. They have been doing what leaders in other countries very rarely, if ever, do to their own citizens.

Did our leaders tell the citizens, never mind, let’s move on, let me give you the benefit of the doubt, perhaps you made an honest mistake after all?

Obviously not. Citizens must be taught a lesson.

Did our leaders tell the Workers’ Party (WP) Members of Parliament and town councillors, it’s your first time managing a town council, we understand you have some issues, we’ll give you a chance to work it out, we’ll let you rectify your mistakes?

Clearly not. The opposition must be held to account.

The WP went though a protracted struggle and ended up being taken to court. All in, a ludicrous six-year saga.

So when Singaporeans demand answers over the mishandling of the COVID-19 crisis and ask why there has been no admission of mistakes and no apology, it is not about simply baying for blood.

It is holding the government to account, in the way that the government has been holding others to account for as long as we can remember.

There is, of course, no way that citizens can be as cutthroat as the government. We cannot take them to court, we cannot penalise them. Showing our displeasure at the ballot box is perhaps the only option.

The crisis we are experiencing has particular relevance to what Lee Kuan Yew once touched upon:

Whoever governs Singapore must have that iron in him.

Or give it up. This is not a game of cards.

This is your life and mine.

People’s lives are now at stake. People’s jobs are on the line. Everything has gone topsy turvy. When will normalcy return?

This is not a game of cards. This is your life and mine.

Unlike in a game of cards, politicians have only one shot at getting it right.

If ministers cannot even admit to mistakes and apologise, how can Singaporeans trust that they hold themselves accountable, that they have learnt from their mistakes and will not botch things up again?

  • I'm Halimah totally useless:

It is precisely the fact that the PAPIGS are not held to account for their failures that they are so used to the way mistakes are made and not one of them are held accountable.
Hep C deaths, SMRT deaths, Mas Selamat jumping out the toilet window, not one of these goons have the balls to stand up and admit their mistakes, and continue to collect their millions.
And it is the daft 70% that gave them the license to ride roughshod over the electorate.
So unless they are given a black eye at the coming GE, they will never admit anything and be accountable for anything.

  • On LKY's seminal thinker:

“Machiavellianism” in the science of psychology refers to a personality trait which sees a person so focused on his or her own interests they will manipulate, deceive, and exploit others to achieve their goals.

Machiavellianism is thus one of the traits in what is called the ‘Dark Triad’, the other two being Narcissism and Psychopathy.

The term itself derives from a reference to the infamous Niccolò Machiavelli, a diplomat and philosopher in the Renaissance whose most well-known work was “The Prince” (Il Principe). This notorious book espoused his views that strong rulers should be harsh with their subjects and enemies, and that glory and survival justified any means, even ones that were considered immoral and brutal.

By the late 16th century “Machiavellianism” had become a popular term to describe the art of connivance and deception to get ahead and to maintain the status quo.

  • REGIME CHANGE is the solution:

Wishful thinking. Will PAP even admit it made a mistake? Did LKY ever admit he made a mistake (and he made plenty of big ones)?

Due to its hubris, PAP has and never will admit it made a mistake. It will also not change because that would also be an admission it made a mistake.

The only way is to get rid of the “spent force”, arrogant and overpaid PAP. Bury it with LKY. Let him take his party with him to his grave.

The problem with these people even suggesting to give PAP a second chance proves that they are both brainless and soft hearted.

They have conveniently forgotten how many mistakes PAP have made over the years and of course, their obscene sky high pay with no transparency and no accountability. They love telling us there is trust between them and us but all that is is just pure HOGWASH. It’s only in their own over fertile imaginations that they THINK Singaporeans support them.

When you have shown how indecisive and behind the curve you are time and again you definitely have been given one too many chances already. The mention of a second chance is downright condescending, insulting and revolting to say the least.

The only chance PAP should get is the chance to be voted out. As many of them as possible so as to send a clear signal that Singaporeans are fed up with their mismanagement of everything from jobs to housing to the ever increasing numbers of aliens let in yearly.

I particularly like the example of WP and the town council. They are being sued even though the latest submission to Lawrence Wong showed clean and unqualified report; even though they are being advised currently by a reputed Audit firm.

There is even a directive to evict Low TK and SL from financial decisions in the current running of the town council.

So where is the second chance?

    Well Done Augustine!

Then again I fear when someone, during the electioneering, started to shed tears and ask for forgiveness; and then say that if they have not done well they promise to do well the next time; will the electorate turns soft in the heart and gives them the vote?

  • NO MORE MANDATE, NO MORE 2ND C:

Just look at the changes made to the Constitution. The Required Qualification of the President Post of the Private Candidate category is Sky High, literally out of reach for the citizen and still be subjected to the committee members raising the level and objection. The last round saw a last moment become “Ex” PAP member, only One qualify from the public office category. MiloIndianCumMalay HaLEEma, Coincident?

Compare with the US President eligibility legislation. Essentially as long as you born in the US and not a criminal. Pure and simple yet the US President is vested with extreme Power and Duty. Have you seen the US President abuse his power to amend the Constitution to suit his own Political Party?

Give a next round?, then maybe only his uncles qualify for GE, Singaporeans daughters become maid, you think?

Furthermore the performance is simply BAD and poor. Even if they offer to run the office for free, I would also reject it. Too much damages had been done ranging from population white paper, CECA, good paying jobs goes to FTs, many PMET lost their jobs, gave billions to foreign students, poor handling of the epidemic causing billions and billions of losses, etc.

Who said, FTs create more good paying jobs… No need wear mask.?.

NO MORE MANDATE, NO MORE 2ND CHANCE.

You must be sleep walking to say that.

Low Thia Khiang had been running the Hougang Town Council since 1991 lah……….certainly NOT the “first time managing a town council”.

People should understand the deficiencies of the so-called oppo’s logic, which cannot hold up to scrutiny, and understand why the sinkie voters keep rejecting them one GE after another, including bye-elections as these occur.

2nd Chance to PAP ? NO WAY !!

Do you know PAP has created a huge pool of New Citizens who will ONLY vote for PAP. They are all well connected with PA/CC/RC groups as their New Citizenship ceremonies were run by you know who.

PAP’s vision of 10M population is in the making with thousands of PRs waiting at the sidelines to become Singaporeans soon.

Coming election is THE LAST CHANCE for Singaporeans to vote for more Opposition. If not, by next election native Singaporeans will become minority of 40% and the New Citizens will make up 60% of voters. Our Children will become 2nd class citizens in our own country, which already happening badly.

God has given Singaporeans the Covid pandemic to open OUR Eyes how incompetent is our 4G Team and the dishonorable Emperor.

Now is the BEST and FINAL CHANCE to vote as many Opposition candidates and parties as possible.

Our Children’s future is dependent on this coming election before New Citizens start to rule Singapore. Think seriously.

So DONT give any 2nd Chance to PAP on the pandemic. !!

Send strong signals to vote for more Opposition to have proper check and balance in our Parliament. Say NO to CECA. Say NO to POFMA.

I have the feeling that they are saving their apologies for the election time. Remember the crocodile tears and the sort in the past election period?
I also have the feeling that there are 2 sets of law. One for the others and one for themselves. They drafted the laws by their own cunning Lawyers and they understand how to break the law without penalties, whereas others have NO avenues to argue with them.
Lastly, I have the feeling that many, many citizen had woken up somewhat and I hope many more will wake up to see how incompetent our MOST EXPENSIVE ministers are when put to the test.
There must be more alternative voices in parliament to make this bunch of underperforming idiots to be accountable to all the failures and their greed.

Response: very well said. Our own POO YI aka Emperor w/o clothes who is currently being pulled by A LOONG string from BEHIND by Dowager Holee Jinx will eventually suffer the same or similar FATE! Think like History always repeat itself:the DOWNFALL of the PAPIGS will be in the Hands of the Dowager!

One FINE DAY WHEN and NOT IF this materializes, the NEW Government should go back to the BASICS, FIRST by REDUCING the OBSCENE $Millions salary of Ministers and all top guns by at least 70%! period. Country before SELF! TO SERVE FOR THE COUTRY IS A CALLING! Next to reduce will be the COL including housing, health care, transport. GET RID of CECA and encourage the LOCAL to take up shunned jobs by increasing the wages. Stop Population Growth. Augustine, Spot on. Since day one, this G has always been very harsh to it’s own people. Just look at the price citizen has to pay besides paying taxes, high CPFs, NS and reservist obligations, just to name a few. When the economy or things doesn’t out to be expected. We were told that this country doesn’t owe you a living. that is how harsh it can get.
Since when have they ever admit to have committed a mistake. I can’t remember any. In fact, they are trying to elevate some into demi god if possible, so that hopefully the people will bow to them and remember their anniversary just like NK regime.
