Celebrating 55th National Day

Our 55th National Day is only a little more than 2 months way. This year, very unfortunately, is a Covid-19 black swan year for the whole world and Singapore is one of the worse affected countries.

Our NDPs have always called for big celebrations, huge display of patriotism and a revival of nationalistic pride but for this year, I would like to urge the government to have a stronger sense of propriety and circumspect.

Unlike all previous celebrations, this year, our national reserves have been much raided and many billions of it have already been spent and much more will be spent, hundreds of thousands of our fellow citizens are either going without jobs, working shorter week, taxi drivers have never had a worse time or facing a very uncertain and scary future. Even very big government backed corporations such as SIA is selling its aeroplanes instead of flying passengers and cargoes to stay in business.

There is a time for everything in life, a time to be born and a time to die. A time to truly and justifiably celebrate our NDP with pomp and pageantry and a time to use the money budgeted for it to better help and save our needy citizens and I believe that all right thinking citizens will agree that even though the money may not go a very long way, the signal and the intention are just as important in our collective nation building journey.

More importantly, to scale back substantially our NDP celebrations or even totally cancelling it except for the mass display of our flags and doing away with the funpacks, even assuming that most of the items are sponsored items will send a sombre but strong message to all our people that difficult time has descended upon our nation, that we are setting our priorities right and the government is leading the way and together with our people joining in, with our resolve, our discipline, our good common-sense and our maturity, we will overcome.

When C19 is truly behind us, we can then celebrate our NDP again in added colours, music, dances and with our military machines and more all thrown in with a vengeance but to me, 2020 is not the right year.

I hope that pap’s book-smart generals and scholars do not again make stupid mistake of knowing only the price of everything and the value of nothing and thinking pap mps so meek and selfish until they have no balls and guts to say no to their political bosses.

Think.

It is not Singapore’s National Day but PAP’s National Day. So make sure you celebrate the real Singapore National Day without any political parties logos, flags or buntings. That way it is a true Singapore National Day.

Don’t be fooled by the PAP to support them. They try to masquerade under the Singapore flag as though Singapore and PAP are one and the same. We know they are not.

So celebrate true Singapore National Day–not the one with the PAP inserted in the celebrations.

  • PAP's failure !:

Simon, you are very right about what you said –
‘There is a time for everything in life, a time to be born and a time to die.”

It’s about time PAP dies due to it’s incompetent Ministers. There is no accountability or sincere self-assessment in handling the pandemic.

Time is right for more Opposition to be elected into Parliament to bring about diversity and more concrete polices and laws to give priority to Singaporeans.

POFMA and CECA needs to be thrown out. CECA has caused unbearable impact on Singaporean jobs.
POFMA is a wall created between ruling politicians and its people on transparency and preventing citizens from criticizing the Govt.

Time for more Opposition to be elected into Parliament.

Frankly there’s no better way to drive home the seriousness of the COVID-19 message than to minimise National Day observances. This is a real national crisis. The health of the nation and the economy is at stake. No point or sense in pretending that everything is good and normal.

Simply have our jets fly around releasing colourful smoke in an aerial display. Get that helicopter carrying the Singapore flag to fly around the island in a show of national pride. And as night falls, blast some fireworks.

Use television to air nostalgic images of National Day celebrations from years gone by.

Let this National Day dedicates to all healthcare workers in the fight of SAR-Cov-2, include those who delivers care and services to the sick and ailing either directly as doctors and nurses or indirectly as aides, helpers, laboratory technicians, or even medical waste handlers.

A big “THANK YOU” to all of them!!

PAP please don’t hijack this National Day showing old black and white photos of one old man shouting “Merdeka” and other PAP’s propaganda, enough already.

  • no good reason!:

If the organizers of the Tokyo Olympics, which is a world wide event, can cancelled the important event, after spending so much time money and effort preparing, there is no reason why our NDP cannot be cancelled!!?? Mind you Japan’s COVID 19 situation is not as serious as ours!!
Who in the right frame of mind, has the mood to celebrate, when we are in the midst of struggling to free ourselves of the thoughts of putting 2 meals on the table and whether the jobs that most of us had, will be there, after the C19 dusts have settled!!

    so right Simon.
anyway did anyone listen to radio presenter glen ong on 91.3fm this morning, scolding the 87k people who signed the petition to not receive the ‘fun’packs this year.
the presenter’s reasons were quite unreasonable. if he wants it by all means take it..no one is stopping him.
.anyway 91.3 is the PAPs’ voicebox…

    @trublu

That is why my bank colleagues and I refuse to accept invite to become singapore citizens.

We can emphatise with you but we also thank your government for treating us,PRs,better than our own governments from when we came.

We are fully aware that there is enough incentives to remain as PRs.
We travelled all over and we are fully aware.
We can never thank your government enough.
If not for your government’s policies for PRs,we would have been left jobless too.

  • Priority:

Priority is to take care of our Citizen at this time..especially those badly hit by the Virus situation and CB.
Many need targeted help..fallen between the gaps of the various scheme or the present help is inadequate especially for those on no pay or jobless now.
    More important than NDP.
