Josephine Teo is only part of the problem – making her a scapegoat is not the solution

Manpower Minister Josephine Teo has been stealing the limelight for all the wrong reasons, bearing the brunt of intense criticism over the explosion of COVID-19 cases among migrant workers.

Each time she opens her mouth, she seems to incur the ire of netizens. Many have called for her resignation.

But what do we have to gain by making a scapegoat out of Josephine Teo?

The COVID-19 multi-ministry taskforce is after all co-chaired by Ministers Gan Kim Yong and Lawrence Wong – they were the ones who earned high praise from Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in the early days of the pandemic. They therefore have to shoulder the blame when things take a drastic turn for the worse.

If we single out Josephine Teo as THE PROBLEM, we could be letting the rest off the hook. In reality, the entire team has failed the COVID-19 leadership test.

What is happening to Josephine bears some similarity to the plight of Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew in 2015. The Transport Ministry then was a hot potato because the SMRT was plagued with massive breakdowns and regular service disruptions.

Lui resigned one month before the 2015 general election, which the People’s Action Party (PAP) won handsomely. Lui became the fall guy. But the SMRT debacle got even worse under his successor Khaw Boon Wan who was only able to ride it out because he was much better than Lui at playing taichi and the blame game.

So what difference does it make whether Josephine goes or stays? The system stays the same.

Instead of making her a scapegoat, we should see her as the product of a system that produces a general turned Trade and Industry Minister who thinks that cotton comes from sheep, an electrical engineer turned Health Minister whose key COVID-19 contribution is coining the term “circuit breaker,” and a Prime Minister who is fond of casting doom and gloom, warning Singaporeans last night that we now live in a “more dangerous world,” and by implication are better off with the PAP.

Sinker Pore is a model :
    1. All or Nothing model. No Shadow system.
    Ship sink all die model.

    2. The passengers also insist die die Insist no Co-captain. Insist no Independent Audit.

    3. A model basing on Believing. This means either you choose to Believe claims they make or you Do not believe them if you dare.

    4. Passengers condone and ignore all mistakes, gaffes, faux pas , missteps since they know this ship if sink they have no backup plan anyways. All backups have been destroyed empowered by the 70% passengers.

    5. A model seeing some realities of life, decided Democracy must be wrong and choose China like model.

    And so I ask :

Given their screwed minds, why not they come out of their closets and ask for abolishment of Erections and see a doctor in the Erectile Dysfunctional Clinic ED clinic ?

I wonder why USA wants to strip HK of financial hub status after losing her virgin-like autonomy to a rapist?

They all should be fired. The entire team is super damn expensive costing us $53m per year for such literally mediocre performance when they said they are the best of the best talents to lead SG. We can get Ardern & her whole team in for a fraction of the price. Sorry the pappie team totally screwed up bad this time..

  • sure or not:

Not sure where the writer got his info from, but from the perspective of a white-collar worker (the majority of Singaporeans), Josephine Teo has been very articulate and makes perfect sense with the things she says. There is a certain charisma and calibre she has, being a graduate of the London School of Economics. As further proof, her constituency Marymount, is being carved out as an SMC from Bishan GRC. This constituency has a high number of well-educated voters. Josephine Teo will secure victory in the GE with a very significant margin.

—”’In other words, nations like China benefitted from locking down early, while delays in the US and Italy may have resulted in unnecessary deaths. Indeed, disease modelers from Columbia University recently found that the US could have prevented 645,000 infections and 36,000 deaths by locking down one to two weeks earlier.”’—Business Insider 9 Jun 2020
…’In reality, the entire team has failed the COVID-19 leadership test.’
Their first ever test, they should get an F from thinking Singaporeans.
    Very, very indecisive—paper Generals, administrators, career Civil servants;
not exactly people known for quick action in fast evolving situations.
Were we expecting otherwise from them?
    Needed SOP from WHO.
    If WHO wrong, blame WHO!
Fully distracted by their pathological need to win GE and to stay in power.

  • opposition dude:

“But what do we have to gain by making a scapegoat out of Josephine Teo?”

Accountability that’s what. She has come under tremendous fire because what she said was not only stupid and ridiculous, it comes off as arrogance too. As a public servant on taxpayers’ money one should know humility and we have seen NONE of that from her but her wayang of workers on her ministry’s radar since January and facing objections from dorm operators.

If you are just too arrogant to admit that you are wrong then honestly, you have already shown that you aren’t the person for the job. Unfortunately this particular impression that PAP has of themselves is that they can’t do wrong and it’s always someone else’s fault, never theirs. It’s this arrogance that people are very annoyed with.

And Gan has also been under fire for his ineptness over losing 1.5 million patient records, a few thousand HIV records and not being able to bring down Covid dorm cases after 2 months. 3 strikes and you are out!

If PAP doesn’t get the comeuppance it deserves in the election then they will just shrug off the noise from us as yet another round of complaints and nothing else. PAP has to be forced to take responsibility and the only way they will do that is when they don’t get the strong mandate that they are asking for.

So come on all you east side voters, make them lose their GRCs!

  • Go ahead whole Jin gang ....:

While walking down the street a Singapore minister was tragically hit by a car and died.

His soul arrives in Heaven and is met by St. Peter at the entrance. “Welcome to Heaven”, says St. Peter. “Before you settle in, it seems there is a problem. We seldom see a high official around these parts you see, so we’re not sure what to do with you.”

“No problem. Just let me in,” says the minister.

“Well, I’d like to, but I have orders from the higher ups. What we’ll do is have you spend one day in Hell and one in Heaven. Then you can choose where to spend Eternity.”

“Really? But I’ve made up my mind. I want to be in Heaven!” exclaims the minister.

“I’m sorry, but we have our rules.” And with that St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down to Hell. The doors open and lo and behold! The minister finds himself in the middle of a golf course. In the distance is a clubhouse and standing in front of it are all his friends and politicians who had worked with him. Everyone is very happy and in evening dress. They run to greet him, shake his hands and reminisce about the good times they had in Singapore while getting exalted and so rich. They played a friendly round of golf and then dined on lobster, maliputo, caviar, and Macallan 1926. Also present is the Devil who really is a very friendly guy and having a good time telling jokes. They are all having such a jolly time that before the minister realizes it, it is time to leave.

Everyone gives him a hearty farewell and wave profusely yearning for his return while the elevator rises.

The elevator goes up, up and the door reopens in Heaven where St. Peter is waiting for him.

“Now it’s time to visit Heaven.” So, 24 hours passed with the minister joining a group of contented souls moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp, classical guitar and singing. They have a good time and before he realizes it the 24 hours have gone by and St. Peter returns. “Well then you’ve spent a day in Hell and another in Heaven. Now choose your eternity.”

“The minister reflects for a minute and answers: “Well, I would never have said it before: I mean…. Heaven has been delightful, but I think I would be better off in Hell hehe.” So ok, St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down to Hell. Now the doors of the elevator open and he’s in the middle of a fiery and barren land covered in waste and garbage. He sees all his friends, dressed in rags picking up trash and putting it in black bags as more rubbish falls down from above. Lucifer comes over and puts his arm around his shoulders.

“I don’t understand,” stammers the minister, “The other day I was here and there was a golf course and clubhouse and we ate lobster, maliputo, & caviar, drank $10,000 Macallan and we flirted, danced. We had a great time. Now it’s just a wasteland of garbage and my friends look miserable. What happened?”

The Devil smiles at him and says, “Yesterday we were campaigning. Today you voted sonny…”

    What has Changed since COViD?
You will get More but of the Same!

    1. Mask shortage and dependency Exposed that they did not really do their due diligence enough despite claiming in a monologue that they learn from SARS lesson. Insufficient masks!

What are they going to do?
More of the same! To continue to be sovereignly dependent on foreign countries for sheeps to produce Cotton!

    2. Cheap FW. Massive infections.

    What are they gonna do?
More of the same! Continue to sovereignly dependent on cheap FW !

    3. Record unemployment rate. Focus so much on it.
Yet they declare a mere 3.3% which none of you can independently audit.

    What are they gonna do?
    More of the same!!

  • Systemic Problem:

There is underlying a systemic problem.
The SG model is the only model it has and proven not sustainable.

It continues to use bloggers and people to sell sg to attract foreigners to live here.

It really has no other solution except things like continuing to depress wages using cheap labor and I expect taxes and costs to skyrocket due to so much spent from the reserves and wages will continue to be suppressed. And totally an unaccountable system void is independent audit.

    Titanic.

  • Some ancient sources:

Is Paradise better as an abode or the tree of Zaqūm? Indeed, We have made it a torment for wi**** wrongdoers. Indeed, Zaqum is a tree issuing from the bottom of Hellfire, the fruits thereof are like heads of devils. Indeed, they will eat from it to fill their bellies. Then, they will have after that a concoction mixed with scalding water. And their return will be to the fire. (Quran 37:62-68)

The wi**** unbelievers will be led to Hell in crowds until when they arrive there, its gates will be opened (Quran 39:71). And verily, Hell is the promised abode for them all. It has seven gates: to each of those gates is assigned a specific class of sinners. (Quran 15:43-44)
To them will be said, “Enter the gates of Hell to dwell inside. And how evil is this abode of the Arrogant.” (Quran 39: 72) But those who reject Our signs they are the companions of the Left Hand path – upon them will be fire vaulted over. (Quran 90:19-20)

She used the phrase “the team”, “Please, don’t demoralize the team”, etc.
    -
She never used the word “we”. . .
