Big clash with Progress Singapore Party

Our Alliance may go into a big clash with PSP led by Dr Tan Cheng Bock as talks have not been fruitful so far.

I am caught in between the clashes but I chose the only logical long term strategic plan for Singapore opposition politics… i.e. Avoidance of conflicts within opposition by uniting all into one force to fight the formidable PAP.

Offers and proposals have been made by both sides but there is a great gap in between the basic understanding of the strategic directions.

While people (including party members_ will sure start to “attack” both sides, more so towards the Alliance, but I find it totally unnecessary.

Politics is not just about “Size”. It is not just about fielding the numbers. Opposition Politics right now is about sending the RIGHT people into Parliament to make Checks and Balances work.

Nobody would say Uncle Chiam’s SPP is a “fringe party”, in spite of its small numbers while Chiam was still actively involved.

The key lies with the candidates or persons in consideration of sending into Parliament.

We have seen how empty our Parliament is on normal sittings. We as a nation has voted in Empty Chairs and Empty Tables. Policies are not thoroughly scrutinized and Parliament is just a pseudo rubber stamp in reality. It is totally dysfunctional.

What we lack is a STRONG Parliament of Great Debates. We must ensure people we have sent into parliament, regardless which party are they from, must have the intellect, talent or expertise to bring onto the table of public debate and discourse in Parliament!

It is only when we have the RIGHT people in Parliament, who can effectively scrutinize each and every policies with no stones left un-turn, then we could be sure that Singaporeans’ Best Interests will be secured. This will need people who are actively involved in policy discussions, deliberations, at the same time with great ideas and ideals to offer to the Nation.

I chose to stand by the side of Kenneth Jeyaratnam not because he is son of JBJ. It is because I have read what he had written over the years and apparently, he knows his stuff well, even though I may not agree 100% with his ideas or points altogether. I just know that he will have something to offer to this dysfunctional Parliament of ours, to revive it, strengthen it into a stronger faculty of Democracy.

Similarly for Tan Jee Say. I definitely have past grudges with Jee Say as I was supporting Tan Kin Lian back in 2011 Presidential Elections. It was Kin Lian who had asked me to forgive and forget, focus on the biggest problem of Singapore Democracy, PAP. I have also read about Jee Say’s write up on Singapore Economy and his manifesto. Similarly, I may not agree 100% with what he has written but at the very least, I know he will have something to offer to Singapore public debates and discourse in policy making.

This is the Spirit of Democracy, plural voice. We can agree to disagree while focus on what we agreed in principle. This is the Foundation of Unity.

I do not know much about other potential opposition candidates, definitely not from PSP. This is especially so when they have not made known their beliefs, ideas and ideals.

How many of them spend most of their waking hours in thinking about public policies? Have they put up any views or opinions to scrutinize the various PAP’s policies?

I can proudly say that Jee Say, Kenneth and I have done so in 2011 GE where we have put in concerted effort to scrutinize PAP’s HDB Asset Enhancement Policy so much so that PAP no longer brags about it and changed course from it.

A friend pointed out the fact that if it was not us hammering PAP away in GE2011 on the inadequate public infrastructure in view of huge population increases, new hospitals would not have sprung up quickly across the island. MRT networks won’t be built in such a great speed. New HDB flats won’t be built in such large numbers within short period of time. Noise Barriers along MRT lines within HDB estates would not be installed… the list goes on.

It is a collective effort of all of us hammering PAP effectively in GE2011, that makes a very significant difference to Singapore over the past decade.

I have confidence in my colleagues in the Alliance to continue contributing to the progress of Singapore. Imagine what more we could have done if all of us are voted into Parliament!

We are DEFINITELY NOT PAP 2.0, so to speak, or just a passive “Co-Driver” who may fall asleep as well from time to time.

These are the people whom I know, have spent great amount of time in their waking hours to think about policy issues, current issues and debating about it, making public discourse of public interests.

Politics is not just knocking doors, say hi and bye, kiss babies… not even about giving out lunch boxes and do charities. It is definitely not about Managing Town Councils which any good Estate Manager could perform that function well.

Politics is about effectiveness to provide the necessary public discourse and policy debates into Parliament, to STRENGTHEN the Parliament as an institution of policy debates and policy making.

While it is regrettable that our Alliance may inevitably walk into 3 corner fights but in the Spirit of Democracy, that’s the Contest of Ideas and Ideals. Even if it is a 3 Corner Fight, we will fight it gentlemanly. Do not need to push blame on who is at fault because no one is at fault.

Reported on TOC Website :Quote – “Six PSP members and reporter had details taken by safe distancing officer during walkabout, after allegedly reported by member of public
Aldgra F. by Aldgra F. 21 June 20202 min read

Six members of the Progress Singapore Party (PSP) and a reporter from The Straits Times (ST) had their details taken down by a safe distancing officer during their walkabout at Block 358 Bukit Batok West Street 31 on Sunday (21 June).

Gigene Wong is one of the six PSP members, who was one the first slate of candidates introduced by the Party on Thursday (18 June).

According to the ST’s report, the National Environment Agency (NEA) officer claimed that a member of the public complained the group assembled at a coffee shop near the area, adding that the group has exceeded the limitation of five people per group.

The six PSP members and the reporter were alleged of breaching the safe distancing measures and will be fined by the authorities.

Nevertheless, the NEA officers reassured that they can appeal against the fine.

The PSP members, however, denied the allegation. It noted that the group sat separately and it has never assembled with more than five people at once.

Meanwhile, three other members of the media – who was not specified from which news outlet – did not have their details taken by the officers.

TOC in its earlier coverage of PSP’s walkabout at Chua Chu Kang GRC noticed that while the groups of the political party is kept to five by its own social distancing duty officer. The various media personnel covering the walkabout will inevitably increase the groups’ size beyond five — something which is outside of the party’s control.

The Elections Department (ELD) released its campaign guidelines for the next GE on 18 June, stating that actions in accordance with the prevailing safe distancing and safe management guidelines will be taken to political parties or candidates who have been found flouting the safe distancing measures.

“This is no different than for any member of the general public,” the ELD asserted… “Unquote.

Response : Fined Gigene Wong??? Later she print out smiley T – shirt like Jolovan Wham to sell?

Both Reform Party and PSP are entangle for West Coast GRC. If there is any third opposition challenging for West Coast, PXP reap the rewards of West Coast. So the best is for both Reform Party and PSP to merge just for this election. Then Tan Cheng Bock with Kenneth Jeyaretnam may have the chance to get into Parliament. Else, Reform Party should give up west coast to Tan Cheng Bock of PSP for Tan Cheng Bock previous excellent percentage performance at GE set record high at the west side of the country. I really don’t think Tan Cheng Bock will challenge LHL territory for Tan CB won’t win at Ang Mo Kio unless Tan CB alliance with LHY to maybe stand a chance at Ang Mo Kio.

Wow, Goh Meng Seng cannot resist a cheap shot at others with his “or just a passive “Co-Driver” who may fall asleep as well from time to time.” statement.

He also likes to think he can do a lot better than WP. If that is true then I most definitely want him to be in parliament. But as always there is the teeny tiny problem of actually being voted in.

Can Meng Seng or even Kenneth kindly explain why WP managed to win Aljunied and not their respective parties? Can he also explain why he has never managed to be voted into parliament despite him hammering away at PAP back in 2011? By all accounts WP failed Singaporeans badly in the last election cycle and yet they weren’t voted out in 2015. Life sure is funny isn’t it?

So he says he will fight it gentlemanly in a 3 corner fight. That’s good but do remember, you have to WIN the fight because no one remembers the loser.

All the best Meng Seng. And try not to stoop so low to have cheap shots ok? Only PAP does that.

Just like you said you do not know much about other potential opposition candidates, GMS, I bet most of us the voters also do not know much about your party candidates. You as well as KJ and TJS should just dismantle your own parties and combine into just a small one if you guys still habour hope of being elected.

And please, if you want votes from oppo supporters, do not criticise other opposition parties. This is the last we’d want to see happening in the opposition camps.

On one hand you say “party members_ will sure start to ‘attack’ both sides …. but I find it totally unnecessary” but then you went on to ‘suan’ ….. “how many of them (the PSP members) spend most of their waking hours in thinking about public policies…. ” blah blah blah.

Do you even know that you’ve made yourself a hypocrite like the papies? You may be smart in certain ways and can lend a voice to ordinary singaporeans but unfortunately you’re sibeh 小气 (petty) who hold deep grudges, for years some more. How to expect opposition supporters to vote for you liddat?

You’re a devout Buddhist, no? You can’t be behaving this way, you know? Reflect on yourself, please.

Michael Jordon and the Bulls versus Issac Thomas and the Pistons. Now, what would happen if there were no referees?

    So what is democracy?

Democracy is NBA finals without referees.

Whether it is the US that is the largest advanced country, or India that is the largest developing country, democracy works in the same way, it confuses the society by constantly creating conflicts and upheavals.

How many countries and civilisations can handle this monster called “democracy”?

In fact, all democracies are encountering different stages of failure.

Take the US as an example, it liberal democratic system has failed to produce a government that can act as a referee for American society.

Republicans and Demarcates have been fighting for domination, as a result everything has become the collateral damage. China, Russia, WHO, global trade, American minorities, American businesses, American economy and the list goes on, they all have become the collateral damage.

Sadly, I don’t see any capable leader in Singapore who can lead Singaporeans away from confrontational political culture. Dishonourable son is like Trump, extremely self serving and confrontational.

    Ha ha ha!

  • No need for some many parties::

Opposition blames Singaporeans for not giving them a chance. But the reality is that Opposition should put aside their egoism, pride, selfishness, poor strategies and myopia to come together, not as loose coalition, but as single party umbrella to get somewhere.

Dont waste time lah GMS. You should fight the pappies 1vs1 elsewhere in a GRC or SMC like a man instead of splitting the opposition votes in multi-cornered fights. Look at the 2011 PE you will know. 2 jokers TJS and TKL came and spoil the party. I still fantasise what if the Doc have won then. We might know the size of our reserves or HC’s salary by now..

  • The Reality Is:

Firstly do not criticise other Opposition Parties or else the voters will think you must be a PAP Mole.

Whatever you or anybody want to say, the Reality is that there are too many Opposition Paries and all of you can never win the PAP – Its REAL unless all of you combined together and fight this election as One Body.

Then it will be easier for the voters to decide whether to continue with the PAP or to vote the othet alternative party.

Unless all of you combined with the intention of killing the PAP, it will be a waste of your time to fught undre different parties.

  • Think It Over Carefully:

Exactly what the PAP wants to see in the Opposition camp to drive away potential fence-sitters or those who are thinking of switching over to the Opposition. Voters will eventually decide not based on the strength of the indiviual but the strength of the party or coalition as a credible alternative to the PAP. A divided oppostion is a sure win for the PAP.

We have not come to terms with the fallout from the Covid-19 crisis which have created such unprecedented impact on lives & livelihoods worldwide!

SG is not spared! Some will be grieving their loss of loved ones to Covid-19 & others feel despair from loss of jobs. Some companies closed down as they can’t sustain their biz! Changes will be evolving!

Many affected Singaporeans are looking for answers re their future & the type of govt & political system to lead SG which they they have to vote at the upcoming GE!

The novel coronavirus sneaked into SG & the 4G leaders were tasked to handle the Covid-19 crisis but failed miserably resulting in bleeding taxpayers’ money (about $100b) to mitigate the economic fallout!

The virus has shown us that we can no longer depend on a dominant party to solve SG problems & its multi-faceted people. We need a multi-faceted political system to lead us!

The present political system situation is being challenged! We can examine a two party system but it takes time. We can start with multi-faceted parties being elected into parliament & from there the alternative parties may be able to work out an United Alliance Party when the time comes after many GEs!

IT IS TIME TO VOTE FOR CHANGE!

Agreed. GMS if you continue fighting amognst the opposition, you would not even get back your deposit. This is the last chance to vote in an opposition. So dont show your disunity to fight the cause. At least RP did well to come out of split voting in West Coast. Looks like you are not fighting intelligently for the right cause. Will vote you out!

GMS is questionable. GMS party is not as impressive as PSP .
