The quality of campaigning among the opposition parties

The quality of campaigning among the opposition has improved tremendously this election, they show good preparedness, as can be seen from The Workers’ Party.

But my question remains, WP is one of the most stable political parties around, and if you have followed their parliamentary questions, I am sure you will see that they have been asking questions very pertinent to Singaporeans’ lives, on healthcare, education, housing, CPF, etc, and this has been going on for the last few parliaments. In other words, they have been doing it for more than a decade now.

But just like I’ve heard in previous elections, I’m going to hear the same thing from Singaporeans – but they are not credible, they are not stable, they don’t have policies. Before every election, we hear them ask good questions, we praise The Worker’s Party for being a stable strong opposition, but when election comes, we throw all that out the window.

In the end, the question isn’t whether the opposition is good enough, isn’t it? It is that we are willing to come out with excuses because we are too scared to vote for them.

If we are scared, say so. Don’t blame the opposition. Don’t blame The Worker’s Party. At the least, own up to our fear, admit that we are scared. Maybe at least that’s a start, to help us assess the opposition properly. Own up to your fear, so that you know you can try to put that aside and assess The Worker’s Party and some among the opposition for what they stand for, that you will at least read what they have to offer.

For one, WP has been giving us credible and strong candidates over the last few elections, and yet we keep letting them down, letting ourselves down. I’m sure we don’t just want to watch a good show during each election, during parliament, without any actual practical outcomes and policies that will benefit us, protect us. I am sure we want more.

But if this is what we really want, then it is to stop treating the elections like a joke, it is to stop treating our fears like they don’t exist. Admit to ourselves our fears, set them aside, and take a good look at what is there to offer. And then choose what will benefit us.

Am I hopeful? I don’t know. I’ve already been disappointed many times, so I know just to let it be. I suppose it’s up to people they want to go through another election of disappointment, and another four to five years of disappointment.

I do think that WP’s performance has improved with time. However, the issue is not about asking questions but about have sufficient clout to make a difference and change policies. This I think they have failed totally. But don’t blame them, that is the system of first past the post election.

Performance in Parliament by asking questions is an indicator of work being done, but they need to transmit the responses and raise further issues with their constituents so that the voting public know what was missing in the response received. Remind the voting public regularly about it–issue by issue.

Without sufficient numbers in Parliament, they need the groundswell of public opinion to be loud enough for the PAP to hear right across Singapore.

There are constant amendment to the constitution; the CPF issue, and numerous conflict of interest issues. those issues still remain. the only way to resolve this situation is to VTO the PAP.

    VTO the PAP.

    Quote,
“Fakery is always precarious: the truth about the asymmetries of power might slip out and spread like wildfire.
    …………………………………..

The basic idea here is the socio-economic-political system is structured such that the only possible output is neofeudalism. In other words, neofeudalism isn’t a flaw in the system that can be changed with policy tweaks or electing a new president or PM– it’s the result of the system working as designed.

Neofeudalism is a peculiarly invisible hierarchical structure of power: The New Nobility (or aristocracy if you prefer) wields vast concentrations of political, social and financial power, and does so without the formalized aristocrat-serf relationships and obligations of classic neofeudalism.

We appear to be free but we’re powerless to change the power asymmetry between the New Nobility and the commoners. This reality is reified into social relations that are simulacra of actual power, pantomimes acted out in media-theaters to instill the belief that the foundational myths of democracy and social mobility are real rather than misleading shadows.

Neofeudalism is fundamentally a financial-political arrangement, marketed and managed by cultural elites who strive to convince us that we still have some shreds of power. These elites have a variety of tools at their disposal. One has been described by filmmaker Adam Curtis as pantomime: Trump says/does something outrageous, the Democrats cry “impeachment,” and so on.

This theater of pantomime serves two purposes: it projects a simulation of functional democracy that makes us believe impeaching one president and getting another one in office will change anything about the neofeudal power structure; it won’t.

The theater of pantomime also distracts us from the remarkably stable asymmetry of power in our social-political-financial construct: various ambiguities are blown into “the most important issue of today,” a revolving performance in which virtue-signaling has replaced actual action to remedy the vast imbalances of power, and appeals to myths that no longer manifest in the real world (democracy and social mobility) are used to suppress and marginalize the search for new structures that would upend the cozy incest of neofeudalism’s financial and political power.

“ How to counter the gradual narrowing of our horizons.

Keep your baby eyes (which are the eyes of genius) on what we don’t know,” pioneering investigative journalist Lincoln Steffens wrote in a beautiful 1926 letter of life-advice to his baby son. And yet the folly of the human condition is precisely that we can’t know what we don’t know — as E.F. Schumacher elegantly put it in his guide for the perplexed, “everything can be seen directly except the eye through which we see.” What obscures those transformative unknowns from view are the unconscious biases that even the best-intentioned of us succumb to.

In Willful Blindness: Why We Ignore the Obvious at Our Peril (public library), serial entrepreneur and author Margaret Heffernan examines the intricate, pervasive cognitive and emotional mechanisms by which we choose, sometimes consciously but mostly not, to remain unseeing in situations where “we could know, and should know, but don’t know because it makes us feel better not to know.” We do that, Heffernan argues and illustrates through a multitude of case studies ranging from dictatorships to disastrous love affairs to Bernie Madoff, because “the more tightly we focus, the more we leave out” — or, as cognitive scientist Alexandra Horowitz put it in her remarkable exploration of exactly what we leave out in our daily lives, because “attention is an intentional, unapologetic discriminator.”

    Quote,

    ” The ‘Quasi-Intellectual’ Sheeple:

My favorite kind of sheeple. These people hold themselves in very high esteem. Some even see themselves as part of the elite (though most of them are not). Normally from the “professional class”, they often hold positions as Doctors, Lawyers, Bankers, Investors, Professors, Scientists, etc, though some have not yet left the university setting, and are simply getting a head start on their superiority complex.

Quasi-Intellectual Sheeple believe in the world of academia as unerring, as opposed to true scholars, who always have the wisdom to question the conclusions of academia. To me, an Ivy League degree is little more than a $100,000 piece of paper; it tells me nothing of the true intelligence of the person holding it.

At bottom, most “higher education” is really indoctrination. People attaining degrees in economics learn what the financial establishment WANTS them to learn, and nothing more. The same goes for any other field of study in which information is extremely centralized and filtered. Yet, Quasi-Intellectual Sheeple have such misplaced faith in the ivory tower that they assume through the system they have reached the pinnacle of knowledge.

This type of sheeple is driven by the desire for respect, power, and sometimes sycophantic admiration. Actually being intelligent is less important to them than having others believe they are intelligent without question. When asked to prove their intelligence, they often respond with indignance.

Quasi-Intellectual Sheeple are easy to identify by their arrogant demeanor. They tend to distance themselves from FOX and CNN and read periodicals like Forbes and Foreign Affairs, which are still propaganda, just of a more complex nature. They respond to most arguments with a smile, due to overconfidence, until they realize they are being soundly outmatched, and then they tend to lose composure. It takes a lot of public embarrassment before they will mend their ways.”

Need to have fire in their belly and willing go make a positive difference.
Need to be more vocal in what they stand for and fight for the people basic right ,especially for the disadvantage.
Should not have a part time job mentality…
