Many manpower ministers – no solution

Many ministers were appointed to be in charge of the manpower ministry over the past four decades – Lee Boon Yang, Ng Eng Hen, Gan Kim Yong, Lim Swee Say, Tan Chuan Jin and Josephine Teo.

They were not able to solve the problem of finding jobs for our local professionals, managers, executives and technical (PMETs).

They do not understand the root of the problem. They continued to applied the same approach – which failed for the past decades.

As our cost of doing business continued to escalate over the years, many manufacturing and service businesses went offshore. Those that remain needed to have low cost labor to continue their operations.

The PMETs bore the brunt of this structural change. They lost their jobs and had to take low paying jobs to continue their livelihoods. They became taxi drivers and “business and marketing consultants”. They engaged in new business ventures. Many of the new ventures did not succeed.

The displaced PMETs accepted their fate. They were fortunate to be cushioned off by the rising values of their HDB flats and private properties. They were able to cope financially, in spite of a drastic drop in income.

The financial cushion will not be available for the next generation of PMETs and also the new graduates who will find it difficult to get low paying jobs.

All this while, the structural problems were not solved by the many changes in manpower ministers.

Maybe, the government was blinded by the revenue of $4 billion to $5 billion a year that is collected on foreign worker levies. It was a good source of income.

Sadly, pay-back time had arrived. The spread of covid infections in the foreign worker dormitories caused the government to call for a circuit breaker to deal with the problem. A total of $95 billion was spent during three months to deal with this problem. It probably took away 20 years of the foreign worker levies.

The revenue that was earned from the foreign worker strategy was totally spent. We are still left with the problem of displaced PMETs and growing numbers of new graduates who cannot get enough jobs.

The future is bleak for the local workers.

  • Why KS if got 70%?:

As I prophecised years ago, only when Singaporeans feel like living in hell will they want change.

Despite covid , they still won’t change.

    I declare they are hopeless.

@TKL. This is the most truthful and essential bread-&-butter post from you, relevant and close to our hearts. I think you are slowly climbing down from your ivory tower. Which constituency are you competing in? I wish you to get into parliament to tickle ass and kick ass. Good luck

For once, Tan Golden Chain is talking sense.

We may have APPOINTED 6 or 101 MINISTERS IN MOM IN THE PAST 4 DECADES TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM OF FINDING JOBS FOR LOCAL PROFESSIONALS, MANAGERS, EXECUTIVES AND TECHNICAL (PMETS).
The GIST of the WHOLE PROBLEM is NOT whether all the 6 multi-millionaire World Class Ministers who are drawing the World Highest obscene salaries, UNDERSTAND OR DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE BLADY ROOT OF THE PROBLEM! The GIST of the WHOLE PROBLEM is all these 6 YESMEN and YESWOMAN HAVE TO FORMULATE POLICIES TO SATISFY AND CATER FOR THE WHIM AND FANCY NEEDS OF THEIR FIACKING BIG BOSS! FOR EVERYTHING AND ANY POLICY THAT IS GOOD OR BAD FOR SINKAPORE, THE BUCK STOPS AT THE DOOR OF THE FIACKING BIG BOSS! Period.

  • People don't understand:

Even famous people don’t understand. The PAP is there NOT to provide any solution.

In the case of FW, all they see is $, $, $. What problem? Of course no solution to no problem.

Similarly for other areas. Citizens see problems and ask PAP for solution. All PAP see is $, $, $. What problems?

People, please, stop asking PAP for solutions to your problems. You want solutions? You ask those parties that can see the problems.

THE MONUMENTAL FAILURE OF PAPpynomics will be the next generation’s living nightmare.

FOR TOO LONG, the dud economics and crude politics of oppression of PAPpypolitics was largely unchecked except from the Workers Party – THEIR EFFORTS WITHIN AND OUTSIDE PARLIAMENT were EITHER GAGGED or handcuffed by PAPpypolitic abuse of their own invented draconian law WHICH THE PUBLIC does not aware of.

If peasant voters don’t wake up and vote for accountability and transparency change, LEE-jiapore is gone – COLLAPSE FROM WITHIN of its own INCOMPETENT RULE AND OPPRESSION concealment of this utter incompetence.

Remember this – no other country in the world spent 20% of its national reserves (in LEEjiapore it is $100 billion) to shore up a sinking economy admitted to be hit “by a wrecking ball” and still shivering in fear of its existential survival now seeking an election mandate to continue with the same old pathway of failure and disaster.

    @ Tan Kin Lian

OVERALL, it is a good perspective of what you wrote here.

Tan Kin Lian :As our cost of doing business continued to escalate over the years, many manufacturing and service businesses went offshore.

But I have an inquiry on your proposition of displacing struggling PMET being “fortunate to be cushioned by rising values of their HDB flats and private properties”

TAKE A LOOK AT THIS ACCOUNTING TRUISM OF IDENTITY.

    ASSET – LIABILITIES = OWNER’S EQUITY

In English, what I have minus what I owe belongs to me.

IF THE STRUGGLING PMETS DO NOT SELL their HDB flats and private properties – whatever the rising values, real or imagined, WHERE IS THE CASH FLOW to be derived to offset falling incomes which they need for day to day living expenses.

Falling income (cash flow from failing business) must risks falling asset values as well (selling their essential accommodation in distress urgency for all PMETS desperately needing to exit their failed/failing business), THERE IS NO CUSHION in there.

Maybe last safety net and struggle on with the GIG economy of driving cabs or food delivery.

“WEALTH” BUILT ON ILLUSION OF ASSET VALUES UNDERPIN by debt leverage is LIABILITY BURDEN because one gets no discount from the banker of mortgage retirement except in proven circumstances of bankruptcy.

ASSET ENHANCEMENT POLITICS OF PAPpynomics invention is a scam.

Don’t you agree, Mr. Tan Kin Lian??

  • opposition dude:

It’s not that the past and present ministers do not want to solve the issue, the main problem lies in goondu Loong wanting to bring in more and more foreigners as the years go by.

Obviously this has resulted in our PMETs losing their jobs and end up driving for Grab and finding it tough to make ends meet. Unfortunately they choose to accept their fates and are still too scared to vote for the opposition which is why this problem continues today.

PAP won’t be loosening up on foreign labour despite what they tell you about DRCs, you can look forward to more than 6 million people on this tiny island in the next 4 to 5 years that much is guaranteed.

How many seats PAP loses on 10 July remains to be seen. We don’t really know how the majority feel anyway. All we can more or less be certain of is that PAP won’t be getting 70% of the vote. Whether there is enough anger on the ground to make them lose a few more ministers is still up in the air.
