Straits Times’s embarking on an ‘ownself praise ownself’ exercise

To commemorate its 175th anniversary, The Straits Times embarked on a “ownself praise ownself” exercise. The heading of the report unabashedly boast: “A daily staple, key source of knowledge for many generations”. It quotes various readers on how they have relied on it for local and global news, sports news, in-depth reporting and analysis as well as entertainment. Not surprisingly, it did not mention that Reporters Without Borders ranks Singapore 158th out of 180 countries in terms of press freedom, below Rwanda, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. So, we shouldn’t expect too much objectivity and balanced reporting from ST, and I would reasonably expect that the quotes above were taken selectively to paint a one-sided picture.

A few pages from the said article above, another report, this time quoting medical journal, The Lancet, reports that the world population will peak at 2064, and by 2100, will be much lower than the peak. Perhaps in view of the recent election debate of 6.9/10m, in which Vivian B asserted “we will not even reach 6.9m”, the state mouthpiece could not resist sneaking in a piece of data by the same magazine stating that the population of Singapore is projected to be 6.78m in 2100. Readers who are not careful may inadvertently think that indeed, Vivian is right, we would not reach 6.9m. But a quick check with The Lancet website will show that they project the population of Singapore will peak at 8.04m in 2062, which the ST conveniently left out.

For the uninitiated, here’s a piece of advise – always read the ST with a big pinch of salt.

PS: Newspapers’ agenda is always to further the interest of their owners. ST’s owner is the government. Therefore, its agenda is to shape opinions so that they are favorable for the G, rather than provide news, analysis and opinions. Always bear that in mind when reading it; compensate accordingly and be aware of what they won’t tell you. It can be interesting and fun.

And this is why ST’s circulation and advertising revenue continue to slide quarter after quarter. Not inly do people NOT want to read nonsense they would rather watch Netflix or play online/smartphone/console games.

Once the majority of the pioneer and merdeka generations are gone don’t be surprised if they can’t even sell 100k copies per day after factoring in sales to commercial entities AND to government agencies like public libraries, statutory boards, schools etc.

As people have said, it’s good for dogshit and selling to the karang guni only.

PAP newspaper by PAP for PAP.

How many copies sold each day?
Who’re the people who place advertisement in a national newspaper with so few readers?
Why would anybody or company want to waste $$$ doing it?

Have anybody notice EX-ST chief edition & journalists only start talking only when they’re no longer in the paylust of ST.

These people were happily do PAP bidding while getting paid.

I’ve zero respect nor care about their views now that they’re not with ST.

  • we dont read the States Times:

we do click on the states times website each day whenever we have the time after TRE and such alternative news sites.

but we don’t pay for pap propaganda. we just click through to see what pap is lying about for the day.

it is just a wonder that some 300,000 folks have chosen to subscribe to pap propaganda. amazing. perhaps most of them are the unemployable degree holders from pap nus pap ntu and pap smu looking at the classified pages in the states times looking for pap crumbs.

it is our firm belief, if only these pap nus pap ntu pap smu degree holders had voted OPPO, and giving the better Singaporeans a chance to form New Government, IMMEDIATELY 400,000 of them shall have a PMET job now held by aliens holding fake ceca degrees holding fake pinoy degrees.

400,000. if don’t believe, ask pap sexpert. she has all the TRUE numbers of exactly how many jobless cotton producing sheep holding pap nus pap ntu pap smu degrees can be employed by removing the aliens holding PMET jobs in pap Singapore.

400,000. and a few more if the useless pap lackeys are included.
